Then why didn't you buy the same vintage McIntosh system your friend had back in the day? I hate when they put lights under tubes these days.

Might be fun to research that! Dont remember the model #s. I actually think it was solid state stuff!

I am not a huge fan of modern McIntosh gear but I do own one vintage piece I will not part with- an MR78 tuner. I’ve had it for years and a few years back I had it overhauled by Rich Modaferri (IYKYK). Amazing tuner! Oh yeah, I am a vintage tuner nerd. My MR78 is 51 years old and I have an even older Marantz tuner too.

Phono preamp? No Sweat , Puffin DSP. You can optical right into your Technics. (I have the same Technics by the way) It used a video upscaling chip and can play any MM or MC cartridge ever made with unlimited tuning options.

It's the way it consolidates all your music and devices into one organised system. It's the wealth of information and links. It's the incredible algorithm which finds new music, and it's the extremely powerful DSP engine. Put all that together and it's indispensable. To me, anyway.

@@Thunderbird139Yep. Let's say you have 3 streaming services, music on hard disc on pcs and a NAS, music on SD card attached to a device, music on usb stick. Then let's say you do a search for an artist. All the songs from that artist, regardless of where they are held will all appear together as if they came from one source, with file types and bit rates and all the albums the artist has appeared on or contributed to, and all the musician and producer credits on all those songs, plus an artist bio and reviews for each album and links to the bios and work of all the musicians involved in all those songs, plus you can play anything on all or any of the Roon ready devices. And then with Roon Arc you can access the whole thing on your smartphone outside. Then, want to upsamples all your content? Done. Want to turn it all DSP? Done. Multiple parametric EQ curves for each device? Done. And that only scratches the surface. Phew!
