I’ll add my voice to the chorus of approval of your decision. I moved to Spain 17 years ago (at Nicolas’ age now) and have built a nice little life which I’m very proud of. However, like you said in the video, holidaying in Italy is not like living in Italy. I can only really speak for Spain, but for an average person on an average income, it’s far from a utopia, despite what the digital nomad types might suggest (I know lots of them and they are among the unhappiest people I’ve ever met). Ok, so we have more sun than Edinburgh and olive oil practically comes out of the taps, but we also have our share of crackpot politicians, mind-numbing bureaucracy, stagnant incomes and social problems to contend with. You seem to have lovely friends, a beautiful home, family within relatively easy distance and an interesting work project that will take you far. I think you’re right to enjoy all your life has to offer in Edinburgh. And Italy will always be there for visits or future life changes. Good luck Nicolas! 😊

I think you have made the right decision, Nicolas. I faced a similar decision when I thought I wanted to move to Baja in Mexico. But, I don't speak Spanish, I don't know anyone there, AND, like you, I have a 12 year old Shih Tsu who is losing his eyesight and needs to be somewhere he knows his way around and feels comfortable. Once I made the decision to stay where I am in Oklahoma, the same thing happened, I began to love my house again and wanted to start pouring myself back into it. it's a very wonderful feeling. I also sold a piece of property I owned in California and used proceeds to buy an electric car of my dreams. an Ioniq 5. Immediately took a cross country trip to visit relatives and had a ball. I just think that when you start feeling like living again, you have definitely made the right decision. ❤

I would like to move from the US to Europe but I have several elderly pets. It's amazing to me that people will say, "You should just get rid of them," as if they were houseplants. Even worse, these are all rescued animals who have suffered abuse and abandonment. I'm just learning to live with the ambiguity about moving because they come first.

Good decision! I think Kylie had an easier transition due to her husband and his family. I’ve too day dreamed of Italy. I live in a Victorian home in the US and it has been quite the challenge finding honest people to do certain things. I’ve resorted to learning lots of different trades over the last couple of decades to avoid being “taken for a ride” lol. Kylie’s more recent experiences with tradesmen and professionals showed me that I could not deal with it. Not financially or mentally.

I feel in my heart that you had made a good decision to stay home. Italy or any other country is fine if your born there, no matter how hard you would try to join in, you would always be the outsider. I'm so glad that you thought of Sophie and now she could remain at home and have a peaceful life, she's already getting up in age and big changes would stress her out. I know that my dog just loves coming home and has all his stuff in place and he's so comfortable. Wishing you the best in life Nicolas and thank you for your lovely videos!

It sounds like you have thought through your decision - of whether to move to Italy or not - very carefully. It is wonderful that you took your dog into consideration (she is very precious to you) and also the fact that you are a single man - hoping to meet a partner someday - in a place where you don't really speak the language fluently yet. Your business partner Vanessa - has a companion - which does make a huge difference in feeling grounded in a new place. Regardless of these things - I think you also have to go with your gut and it sounds like your gut is telling you to stay put for now.

Nicolas, I think your decision is a wise one. I am from New York and my family is from Italy. The culture is very different and while it is necessary to speak Italian, the way the country runs gets difficult, particularly for those who are not used to strikes with airlines, sim cards, food, telephone, and governmental laws that keep changing. I go on vacation and that is enough for me. I too have elderly dogs and, there are not very many veterinarians in the countryside. For now, see how you can do with Sophie getting on in years the UK is lovely so your choice is a wise one though you can always change your mind later on. Everyone is different and I am fluent in Italian with lots of extended family there so it is easier for me. It is always good to make your choices wisely and you have done just that. Cordially, Catherine

Someone once told me “the grass isn’t greener on the other side, it’s just another shade.” Italy is wonderful to visit, but living amongst the Italians, and how they live and work is not conducive to people who have lived in the US and UK. Edinburgh is a lovely city, and you seem to have made a home there. Remember, you’re very lucky to be able to get on a plane and go somewhere for a weekend, Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, Austria, etc. and enjoy all the aspects that city has to offer and be able to come back to your home in Edinburgh. For centuries Italy has been a fave place for English travelers. However living in a foreign country and being a tourist are different experiences. Doing a language course can be a fun challenge but well worth the effort. I learned French at school so I was not eager to engage in conversation when I first began tot ravel believing my mistakes would be excruciating. I hv found, however, that people appreciate the effort especially if the effort is accompanied by a warm smile and some humility. Today I listen to French radio via the internet and hv found my fluency has improved. Part of learning are the mistakes we make. One piece of advice I would give to anyone learning a foreign language is to keep a dictionary close by for immediate access should a phrase or word be unknown. But best of all, speaking a foreign language gives a glimpse into that culture as well as similar languages. But always hv fun!!!

Edinburgh is such an incredible magical place. Everytime you take us along on a walk or a picnic with Sophie, I am always in awe of it's beauty. And its home!!!!! So happy you made the decision to stay. You and Sophie have such a sweet life there. A cozy home, familiar surroundings and friends, and gorgeous landscapes right outside your front door. Now you're at peace with your decision , you can begin to feather your nest for the fall and winter season upon us. Sweet pumpkins flanking the front steps, falling autim leaves...a glowing amber candle..... I can just imagine it all!

Thank you, Nicolas. Could you possibly consider taking us with you to visit some antique shops, flea markets and florists in your area? Other interesting places could include ancient cemeteries, old churches and public gardens. Afternoon teas are fun in beautiful hotels; museums are fun; and walks on university campuses are great. Thank you! Happy Autumn.

Great decision! Sophie would thank you if she spoke our language. Our precious pets don't stay with us long enough and all the years they have should be the best we can make them. Also, I can tell you are a people person and moving alone would be very lonely, at least at first.

I think you have made the right decision. If there were two of you ,yes, but being single it would be very lonely and stressful settling in

My son just got back from a month in Italy. He enjoyed seeing the country, said it was very expensive and quite a bit more since his pre Covid trip vs now. However, he would not move there either. Given what you e done to beautify your current place it seems your energy is where you are💕

I see you’ve given a lot of thoughts to moving to Italy. It’s a place I’ve wanted to visit for awhile. I was delighted to hear that you have decided against moving at this time. I really enjoy your videos from where you live now. It’s so beautiful there and fits you so well. I’ll enjoy your visits to Italy. Go ahead and plant yourself in your house! Peace and happiness my friend. 😊

I too love Italy and have spent dozens of holidays there. But I think you have made a wise decision. Vacationing and actually living day to day are totally different as Italian friends who have moved there have told me. I love your vlogs. Enjoy every moment of your life. You enrich my life.

I'm sure we would all be eager and happy to continue to support your channel from wherever you choose to base yourself as 'home'; I certainly am. But looking at how happy you seem with this decision at this point in your life, I believe you've made the right choice, I really do. And now that decision is made you can go ahead and make plans for the foreseeable with more certainty and purpose, which is brilliant! Onwards and upwards Nicolas 👍 Good decision :) 👍 Also - it makes any visit to Italy all the more special :D I might take a look at Babbel. I love to learn enough of a language to get by as a tourist don't you? I find if you show willing, the locals try harder to communicate with you more.

Nicolas, I'm fairly new to your channel, and I grow fonder of you and your work with each one. You're both elegant and authentic. My wish for you is that you always keep your authenticity, without becoming cynical or blasé. As I've become more familiar with you in your videos, I've come to see your warmth, thoughtfulness of others, and I especially like that you include your younger years on occasion. You are truly a gem, with much wisdom & expertise. Thank you. 🥰

Good for you that you have reached a decision about where to live. Everything in life is a matter of choices. We change constantly and nothing stays the same, so who knows what will happen in the future? Keep on enjoying life and thank you so much for contributing with such positive energies.🙏🏻🍁🇩🇰

I am so glad you are staying in Scotland. It is one of the reasons I originally began to watch your channel. I live in the US and have always had a weak spot in my heart for Scotland. It is so sweet that you considered Sophie. Can’t wait for your fall and holiday videos.

I knew you always put Sophie first.. it’s just the way you relate to her💚 she is more than a “dog” to you😊 she is your family💚 That exactly is the way that I treat Otis. All major decisions depend on him and his welfare. He is a seven-year-old Cairn Terrier. .and it’s just me and him also. I always consider him and every decision that I make regarding his welfare also. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Sending you loves and hugs from Massachusetts.
