If we don't want clean, then are even trying to add colour back at the mastering stage as well.. the British Kolorizer plugin is just a 3 knob inteface that just impplements a curve and some saturation, presumably from an analogue console.

@@PaulThird You are right. They are a bit heavy on the CPU. That Joe Chiccarelli plug is my favorite. I normally don't use or like presets but his seemed to get you 95% of the way there. I've never found that to be true on any company's plugins. First time I tried it I put it on a snare track and hit one of the snare presets and it sounded like what I normally would take 15/20 minutes and three plugins to create. No Joke! The Al Schmidt is very subtle. Just like everything I read about Al's techniques.

I'm going to give the noise-ash a try. Wether I use it will be a lot about wether it's very CPU-friendly or not, because that's pretty simple processing which can be done with Ableton-stock. I believe all DAWs should release plugin-versions of their Reverbs btw.. Not many things in mixing are more annoying than working with someone who uses another DAW, but you're having a hard time putting additional instruments (usually a voice) in the "same room", because you don't have the reverb. You can get close, but it's a lot more work than just using the same reverb and getting the settings + tweaking the pre-delay.

11:11 TDR Slick EQ has also smart ops to eq to noise profile. 12:27 very smooth, silk sound
@PaulThird
Жыл бұрын
It's not the same. Cos pro is all about eq'ing to noise in relation to the fundamental. You first let it create the sources ceiling and then you can adjust certain frequency ranges to noise slopes in relation to the fundamental so when I eq 10-12k to pink noise it's pink noise starting from the vocals fundamental. I don't know any other eq that allows you to do that.
@soundcore183
Жыл бұрын
@@PaulThird What do you mean by fundamental, the lowest note or peak of a vocal (it is also the key frequency) this can be separated by secondary eq, boosted or attenuated. All the other kind of peaks in the frequency spectrum are formants. The pink noise is more evenly distributed than brown noise, that's why it used mainly for the 'ideal' tonal balance. If you don't have that precise tonal balance curve, it can be basically created by a match eq against source and pink noise. Sounds like the pro is separating the noise and tonal part and eqing only the tonal part which of course not so conventional interesting way. The match to noises makes sense because it is emulating the natural distribution of sounds (higher frequency, less energy or amplitude, lower frequency, more energy or amplitude). It is important to notice that some sounds having that character of 'peaking' in the midrange which could cause problems in the mix but if going strict for that tonal balance could also eliminate that character and this is again compensated by heavy use of saturation.
@PaulThird
Жыл бұрын
It's hard to explain without you physically working with cos pro. On a vocal it will visually plot out the vocal peaks as it is. From there you can see where the main fundamental (not lowest note but lowest main peak) or "chest voice" is. What you then do is choose a slope (it's all purely visual) and place whatever slope you choose in line with your "chest voice" as meno calls it. From there you can see where the plotted frequency points sit in relation to the main fundamental of the voice and align them accordingly to that specific noise slope. So what I do is adjust certain ranges of frequency points to a noise slope. I am not completely matching the whole frequency response directly to the noise slope. I'll leave certain dips if that's the character of the voice but it's more about ensuring that on average the vocal meets the slope I am setting so mostly everything is in harmonic or tonal balance. So when I do the -4.5db slope it's about ensuring that the low & mid range are in balance with the fundamental in relation to how we hear acoustic sound. That means that we don't have low and mid frequencies excessively out of balance with one another because noise is always in balance, its just the tonal character (dark to bright) that's affected due to how it's sloped. And then when I take the natural 5k dip that normally occurs and set that to brown noise its still in relation to the fundamental and same with high end to pink noise. It's taking those peak frequency plots and aligning them in balance to the fundamental using a noise slope that results in a certain tonal characteristic but one that's still in harmonic relation to the main fundamental of that voice Once your frequency plots are visually alligned to the slopes, you conform it and it gives you the altered frequency response There is no physical noise present when learned, its all visual and baked into the algorithm. That's why when I do it I don't even need to listen to it. I can do it all visually and conform
@soundcore183
Жыл бұрын
@@PaulThird exactly any noise mixing happening but the noise shape is present only internally as frequency filter contour but giving the vocals a natural roll off by applying it on average, it is also the ideal slope for mixes, noise is balanced but vocals are naturally opposite, it would give a chunky low and a little weaker mid range if going after the noise contour. You referring to the 5k dip it is also the range of clarity and presence of a vocal in that range. Also 5k is where the air band begins. I guess our ears are more sensitive to the top end (it becomes more apparent) once the low end and mid frequencies are balanced and fixed. The interesting smart part about the pro is leaving the noise as it is (also the sibilance) and just processing the spectral tonal part. Which makes totally sense because that's the crucial part where the frequencies are clashing with other instruments - if there is a correlation with the range of about 5k to 20k in a mixing context and frequency masking it simply has not such impact and can be ducked out if needed. If talking about tonal balance why would it be needed if not for a mixing purpose? There is an alternative way I found out as going after the tonal balance contour. Just looking at vocals with spectral layers, the more brighter parts are saturated, while there are some parts which are darker. Sometimes there are extremes like oversaturation or generally dull parts. This can be fixed specially with a tool in spectral layers to fit that into the mix another way is just taking the vocal shapes selection and cutting them spectrally from the rest of the mix let's say beats. Making a low-cut with spectral layers is just as fun without the fear of creating filtering artifacts or linear phase ringing it is as sharp as a knife. Unfortunately I don't own izotope RX yet, but it is also needed to align the DC offset for further processing. I should create a video about it once I fixed my current computer. lol
@PaulThird
Жыл бұрын
What else can I say... The process works consistently for me 🤷♂️ the 5k(ish) region dip is naturally present after compression. I just tailor it to brown noise so it's present but not too much for sibilance etc and still falls in balance with the chest voice. As the vocals are the main focal point it makes sense to my ears to make it as balanced as possible which sets the rest of the processing around it. Each to their own though. Just do whatever works for you 🤓

You just need lots of small layers of verbs. I have 3 rooms (small, medium, hall), and a big verb (izotope neoverb) for choruses 2 or 3 delays as well as harmonisers and doublers All blended to taste and in certain sections for the affect I need You can't achieve proper depth with one verb I've found. It's all an accumulation and you kind of have to put a vocalist in a space you create that fits well with the instrumentation. Without it the vocal sounds disconnected from the track which might be what you want but in most cases you'll want to create a shifting space that works and evolves throughout the track

Fortnight. We were waiting on getting a decent deal for a neve 1073 LB and I wanted around 6 months to do a proper review. Ended up not going for the LB after buying a golden age premier 73 so we've decided my big honest objective review will be in 2 weeks time

I really like this video Paul but you made the mistake that I do often and that is to talk about audio but not show a demonstration of what you're talking about. Especially on that last one the action tremolo plugin if you would have just shown an example then it would have been a lot easier to explain. Although I did like your dance moves LOL! HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!

I used to think that but it honestly ruins retention. For whatever reason people prefer to hear me explain things haha 🤷♂️ others need examples though. KZitems a lot about your delivery and if you explain it throughly then people will try it out and take your word for it but if you are vague as shit then people will hollar for audio examples Plus I want people to go to the podcast did examples haha

What machine learning plugin you mean? The new Tone Empire? You mean it dont make sense what he is doing, sampling gear instead of modeling it?
@PaulThird
Жыл бұрын
Not saying which plugin it is haha if I do then it'll give the developer publicity which I don't want. It's one of those where.. If you have a hunch what it is and considering buying or using it.. Then I'm warning to have a look under the hood and you'll see how absolutely broken it is Proof that machine learning isn't there yet for creating "more accurate emulations than algorithmic circuit modelling" But for now all interest in the plugin has died down so I'm happy to leave it.. For now

Didn't have any audible aliasing when I checked it. The harmonics slope off if I recall correctly so it doesn't make that much higher order harmonics

Not relevant to the topic at hand lol I just noticed you had the evo 16 in the background. We just got that for our project studio! Things fantastic and sounds great. Actually the preamps are really freaking great and I wasn't expecting that, guess you don't gotta spend $4000 on a 1073opx to get good drum recordings LOL

It's actually an SP8 haha tbh it'll sit there gathering dust. I'll probably end up selling it cause I just don't have any need for more than 2 mics and I've got 6 seperate line in and outs with the apollo x6 so more than enough for any gear I'd use. I just bought a golden age premier 73 pre as well and tbh I'll use that for everything. I didn't think UA were gonna give me the x6 to keep so the SP8 was gonna run all my 500 series stuff when I handed the x6 back but thats no longer the case 😅

For vocals. 3 room reverbs, big verb (blend of 3 different verbs), 8th note, 16th note & slap delay. Noiseash action delay if I want to go a bit crazy and on guitars there's a fx aux split L+R (one side with arturia spring verb and I think echoplex on the right) Apart from that I like the UAD motown chamber on acoustic guitar and the capital Chambers on drums

Learning one new thing can lead to a lot of new tricks that yiu haven't thought of befoer as well. We should be sharing all of the great techniques that we discover. It's the song writing and your sills that make a person unique, not because they know one secret trick where you can jam in all the buttons on a compressor! I have a lot of musician friends, we share techniques and fun stuff we've found all the time. Ways of playing chord on guitar doing some insane finger yoga! lol... I wish I had more producer friends, it would be so great sharing tips and tricks that I've found out. In my 20 years of making music, I have had a really weird, isolated career where I don't know any other prducers.3

@@PaulThird I'm just playing. That's fair enough if you feel that what makes to unique shouldn't be shared and it gives you your sound! I love finding out cool new stuff that nobody has thought of before. I'm happy to share because it's just one more tool in an entire arsenal of screws that make up the entire machine. A sound that I got really well known for and basically changed the diection of how Psytrance bass was processed foever after and that EVERYONE uses now - I was pretty sure I was one of the first people to do it 20 years ago. That was using the original Cubase 3 Quadrafuzz on bass plucks without changing a single control... The crossovers were so badly designed it would make bass sound plastic because of the crazy amount of phase rotation. Putting five or more instances of Quadrafuzz on a sound without altering any settings - it sounded incredible. You'd have modern Psytrance bass in an instant. It was unique and better than any saturation at all. It's a shame they got rid of their best stock plugin in version 5. I haven't worked out how to use a wrapper to get this old 32bit plugin working :( JBridge works on other plugins, but not Quadrafuzz on my system - but I've seen other producers have it working in their DAW. There are two old versions. Version 3 is the last and best version. Any oportunity that comes up I always talk about it because I miss it so much!

Welcome to the darkside. It always starts with just ONE piece of analog gear and then suddenly cellular division occurs 😂 From my experience and I am not a expert, but it makes mixing muuuch easier when with incoming signals sourced from a good mic pre and cheek kissed by a compressor. If you are going to nuke the budget those two pieces are where you do it. Other than that like EQs or other add ons, absolutely not. A budget version or a plugin can easily fill that role. Yeah I wouldn't recommend the Lindell gear. They are not good in my opinion.

Not unless it starts getting traction and youtubers start pushing it. I don't want to give the plugin or dev oxygen but I still wanted to give a nod to people who are into doctor and stuff so if they have a pretty good hunch what it is they'll know to look at it closely as it doesn't take long to see that it's completely broken with harmonics being heavily lopassed at one setting and then completely wide band at another slight notch up. compression being completely fixed with input having no impact whatsoever on the compression, only saturation. Audible Aliasing when pushed hard cause it can't be oversampled due to it learning at a fixed sample rate. Oh and actual amount of gain reduction impacted quite a bit by how the release is set.. And it also doesn't compress until the dial is set pretty high. It won't compress at all until the dial is pretty cranked and there's no real way of knowing when it kicks in on the plugin unless you look at doctor. It's completely fixed anyway so it will always begin at a very specific setting regardless of input gain. No analog compressor acts the way that thing does however my demo expired so I can't say if its been fixed since I tested it so I've got to be careful but when I tested the plugin it was released and the developer was pushing the machine learning aspect heavily as well as a few other dubious remarks

@@PaulThird sure I clicked but didn’t watch. So can count me as an engagement. You often offer good content but these titles offer zero value and come across as purely manipulative. Like if I wanted to do a search if particular plugins are good this won’t show up in results. It’s just bait rather than helpful

Sorry dude that makes no sense whatsoever. The title was intriguing enough to make you click so I did my job right. That's how it works on youtube. It's called creating intrigue. I'm still gettinh my head round this. You like my content and clicked but didn't watch?? That makes no sense at all man.. Like none whatsoever. The titles telling you I'm away to talk about plugins I've never talked about before.. And that's EXACTLY what I did in the video. You've not explained once why the title has no relevance to the content and why it's manipulative. Anyway why would you give a title that's manipulative and cringe engagement by clicking on it?? And how can you call it manipulation if you didn't watch the content to see if it was actual clickbait? Basically from what I can tell you were hoping I was gonna bash plugins and be negative and cause that's not what it was you are pissed that I didn't make that oblivious?
