The sheep head and sell dog meat comment is likely a verbatim translation from a Chinese idiom, which means that the shop is advertising some high quality item but instead sells something inferior, so they hang a sheep head "to advertise for a product" that they don't offer.

Upper Sergagoon Shopping Center was completed in 1980. It not a mall for the Gen Z would want to go. But those who went there during the 80’s and 90’s, it’s a lively place. There used to have a Game Arcade, Snooker Tables. Now, only the regulars will visit those remaining shops like food stores and restaurants. The Computer Store at Level 4 (Mr Lim used to sell PC Game but it’s not a gaming shop.) I do drop once in a while for my haircut at the Red Panther. Yes, the building is old. Yes, it’s now a Ghost Town. But I has a special place in my heart.

The old Serangoon shopping center was one of my favorite places in my teenage years. It had a book rental shop, other shops selling unique things, pretty good food and always a lot of space. It was 3 bus stops away from my flat in Hougang, and almost every bus goes there. Now I live within 5 mins walk of NEX and 10 mins from SSC. I should go there for the Teochew food. Upper Serangoon Shopping Centre used to be my main mall back in 2004 when I was in secondary school...only because it was the closest mall to my school 😂 It somehow used to be even more quiet back then. There used to be a mini hawker centre on the ground floor and a furniture shop if I remember correctly. The gaming shop has been there since the 90s and the owner is a really nice guy to the point that he has a steady following of regulars who buy from him(to support him) even if his prices are slightly more than easier to access, bigger competitors. Thanks for the little walk down memory lane. Great video! PS: Those shops without signboards are not actually closed shops- the tenant left and the owner hasn't been able to find a new tenant. Just thought I'd clarify that since it seemed like you thought they were just shops that didn't open that day.

In Upper Serangoon Shopping Centre, during lunch hours, the small eateries are crowded, during dinner hours, Fragrant Garden will be crowded. Traditional teochew dishes will be the steamed pomfret teochew style, braised duck, pig jelly (not easy to find in other restaurants) and the Yam dessert. The vegetarian restaurant is also popular. Also, you didn't go to 5th Floor, Computex (shop selling computers and gaming stuff) is a popular store in this mall. Back in the days in the 90s, this is where all the students from nearby schools will come and buy games and computer accessories. It has survived over the years, adapting to new trends. Back in 1990s, there are not many malls in the heartland of Singapore, USSC, Thomson Plaza, Katong Shopping Centre and a handful of others serves the needs of the residential areas. They used to be really popular. The mall may be old and have few shops left, but it was one of the older malls in Singapore and carries a lot of memories for people who used to visit.

I visited like 15 years later, it was not empty but most of the nice shops were now occupied by not nicer shops and the place looked run down. The escalators were working, but most of the chain fast food shops were gone. It just looked sad. At least this place looks well lit and clean, even with the broken escalator and closed shops.

As an ex-resident of Serangoon, I have to agree that the layout for NEX mall is really bad, especially for people who have never been to the mall before or frequent enough. And yes that ONE escalator at the middle is always crowded during peak hours, so are the lifts. The other escalators at the both ends of the mall are pretty confusing too, it feels like when you go up one level from one end, you have to go across to the other end to get down one level or just join the long queue at the middle escalator. I guess they designed it this way was to probably encourage shoppers to explore the mall more?

Thanks, Ghib for your video of Upper Serangoon Shopping Centre. It has a special place in my heart!❤ This old shopping centre was very popular among the nearby residents during the 1980s and 1990s. It holds a lot of happy memories for me when I always went there to buy my Richard Clayderman cassette tapes and The Checkers (popular JPOP group in the 1980s) cassette tapes, computer hardware, arcade and photo-stating shop. My boyfriend, now husband, and his friends enjoyed going to the Arcade to play games and the computer shop owned by Ah Lim to buy computer games and hardware on the 4th floor. Until today, my elderly mom still visit the traditional Chinese medicine shop to buy stuffs and do her hair on the 4th level and get her massage for her back pain problem. Once in a while I will drop off my elderly dad to this shopping centre to get his haircut for $6-$10. He will take the lift from Basement 1 carpark all the way to the 4th level. Maybe I should bring my hub to patronise the Teochew restaurant this week! 😇😂

Oh god not the ghost town.. So context, Upper Serangoon Shopping Center was built in the 70s and it had NEVER been a hype. It's always been a ghost town since its fall in the 90s and it never got back up. During the 2000s, it was still ok-ish as it was a place where you get your school uniforms as one of Singapore's biggest school clothes supplier was based there but since it moved out in 2014, it's deader than nothing. The whole place is practically abandoned with only a few handful of interior designer shops, barbers, one big teochew restaurant, one big vegetarian restaurant, some dojo and that's about it. It did see a slight resurgence in the late 2000s due to it having a lan shop at the 1st floor corner where kids from nearby school would often head there to game thus it did spruce up the mall for a while for like... 2 years? Owner's wife then contacted nose cancer and left plus with the lottery shop closing due to being robbed beforehand, the building totally became a dead mall again.

Also, the guy that called the mall "worst" had the idiom wrong. It's supposed to be "hanging a lamb's head but selling dog meat" which in kanji is “挂羊头卖狗肉”. What it means is that you're fleecing/cheating your customers that you're selling the best product by promoting it but then deep down, it's inferior stuff or just fake so like what the idiom said, you're saying you're selling mutton or lamb meat by hanging its head to signify it but then behind the background, the meat ain't actual lamb or mutton but cheap dog meat.

BK, McD, Freshness, MOS, KFC, LJS, Yoshinoya, Wendys, Broaster, etc. alongside many other buffet type eateries like Seoul Garden, Daesikksin (damn I miss this one), and another one that I can't recall the name below where Watsons is now.

The Upper Serangoon Mall has a ballroom at the top, it's a very nice place! For Nex, yes the infrastructure is confusing but once you get used to it, it's a decent place to navigate.

I'm glad that you liked our singapore's kaya toasts. In Singapore, Traditional delicacies are always better than the nowadays modern delicacies as they often lack in flavor, to the extend of olden methods. Traditional delicacies are slowly shrinking to almost non-existence inevitably to aging as modern delicacies are taking over the old that may soon be forgotten, thank you for trying them while they still flourish! I really hope one day to go over to japan and have a try too!

I know he's going to feature Serangoon because this mall really cannot make it. That's where we used to buy pirated stuff. I have to nominate JEM in Jurong East MRT. It's very badly managed, a lot of things spoil and not fixed. The toilets have so many not working wash basins. They don't even want to spend money to get a plumber to change the fittings. The escalators keeps breaking down. The carpark has its own problems too. Just a very horrible mall because of management.

FYI, the worst and I mean, the WORST mall in Singapore has gotta be KEMBANGAN PLAZA.

Omg i missed this place... Parco Pot Black Billiard Center 93-94...well it's old...of course you can't compare a shopping mall built 40+ years ago with modern ones like Ion Nex or Plaza Sing.. tenants are moving out or ending their businesses 😔😔..same fate facing Far East Plaza, Katong S.C... anyway I love these older shopping malls ❤Thanks for sharing!! 🎉❤

Most malls don't care about recording, malls like Upper Serangoon, Parklane and Orchard Tower(in the past) have security actively stopping people from recording because it's a direct command from management. Every video recorded of those malls is a hit to their property net value due to sleazy activities, disrepair, lack of facilities, etc, so it's not a surprise why they're so strict with it. Upper Serangoon is especially strict since they've tried to en bloc and failed several times already

I think the phrase with regards to Sheep and Dogs is loose translation of '挂羊头卖狗肉‘ to hang a sheep head but sell dog meat. The chinese saying means to be doing something else different from the what you see. Could be for the 'Massage shops'. 😉

USSC is indeed a waste of space but i think Beauty World Plaza is worse. Its right beside beauty world mrt station with ample crowds yet this triangle shaped building looks dilapidated. Escalators are permantly down and less than 10% of tenants are operating. Note, i am not talking about Beauty World Centre which is beside the abandoned Beauty World Plaza.

OMG. I have been waiting for a chance to vent out on NEX. It’s layout of the mall is poor beyond words. Among all the new malls, OMG. 1st the mall carpark is so badly designed it interlocks the cars in the mall, they have to block off a lot of lots to allow traffic to flow! 2nd. There is no pick up point, the taxi, the bus stop, all squeezed into a 2 lane road! With a lot of buses and taxi and cars. 3rd, The multi storey car park. U can come into the mall on 3rd floor. But to can’t go back, because only 1 escalator going 1 way. The escalators in the mall are the worst! Always a facing a big pillar in front blocking traffic, Once , I saw a lot of poke trip over each other as it’s too crowded with huge pillar blocking. Some escalators go to every floor. Some have to go insodevisetan to access between 1st and 2nd floor. 4th ,The NTUC on top floor, poor old uncle and aunty. Have to carry all the way down the crowded escalators. The lift takes forever to come, it’s always full and you can’t get it. The MOST IRRITATING modern mall I ever been to. Theses are just some of the few faults. The list in non exhaustive. I rather travel further to AMK hub or Hougang mall

Used to have house of seafood at Lv3. Yun nam kitchen is good also. Living in serangoon for the past 9 years, agree nex is a bad mall i try to avoid. U haven’t seen the crowd on weekends and nighttime yet. PS should take the lift up to lv5 USSC to explore , i did it a few years ago but not sure if it’s still accesible

The lamb head and dog meat is a chinese proverb that is trying to say that certain shops may not be really providing the services or goods they advise on their shopfront. In other words, shady shops.
