The poem described how a Christian owes his loyalties to both his homeland and the heavenly kingdom. In 1908, Spring Rice was posted to the British Embassy in Stockholm.

I'd hate to see God save the Queen go, but this great British hymn should be our national anthem when she passes 💕

I wonder why this controversial melody is played in the US where William Penn escaped to be free of Royal Tyranny. Under the divine right of Kings one died for his King (who stood in for God). One swears to the death for the King. It is a patriotic song but should NOT be presented as a hymn where God does not equal country. We have separation of church and state here for precisely that reason.

This song which was originally a poem has nothing to do with any monarch it’s about your country and the heavenly kingdom and remembering thankful sacrifice of servicemen during the Great War In the UK at that time and afterwards god came to represent the country almost as singular belief, the king was mostly seen as a high priest leading the whole country in congregation. This was mostly caused by the severe grief the war left the UK with afterwards and gave people something to believe in

Truth be told, the US does not have separation of Church and State. That was an idea in the Federalist Papers only. I find it abhorrent that the US lives in the mass delusion based on god. Take the imaginary friend out of the picture and you might have a nice country.
