When you say you're going to walk us through step by step you did so BETTER THAN ANY of the hundreds of videos I've ever watched! I've NEVER seen the break down explained in the detail that not only gives me a starting point but actually teaches me WHY I'm choosing that point, the colors, the contrast & drawing the eyes left to right throughout the painting. My problem is color mixing/ values that look natural/ which colors that flow together & how to use them effectively in a painting to give the painting balance that's pleasing to the eye! I learned so much in your first 7mins that I'm now going to BINGE WATCH all your videos. THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I'm so Eager to learn more & continue growing! 😁🤗

There's something about the in-between of foreground and background that I struggle with quite a bit in landscapes. It's tough to explain, so an example would be a mountain/desert landscape. It's easy to paint the mountains, as well as the desert. It's the point where the desert begins to flow into the bottom side of the mountains in the distance that stumps me everytime. I can blend it into a mirage effect, but I obviously don't want to depend on the comfort of that for every piece. There's not always a treeline there to differentiate between the end of the horizontal to the vertical within a landscape painting. I don't know why that's so difficult to verbalize. Thank you for sharing your best tips and techniques. I've been painting my entire life, but didn't have the confidence to pursue it until your videos really made things click for me, those true "ah-ha!" moments. I sold my first commission piece this month and since then, have had more people contacting me. Thank you for giving us all the confidence to go get painting.

Chris, that old saying 'Those who can do and those that can't teach' definitely does not apply to you!! You do both incredibly well and you're the best KZitem tutor I've found, for me. And it's the repetition of the basics that does it, so as I'm painting I'm now always thinking 'get the value right, nail the composition block in the shapes etc' and slowly it makes a difference! And if I could offer my own humble advice - it is just practice practice practice or 'go get painting! 🙏🏻

@GalleryBry
3 жыл бұрын
Perhaps I can assist, Peter. I often tell my students to squint and look for the largest shapes first. With boats, for example, you might try “enveloping” it first. In other words, try sketching just the outline first using only straight lines. Then use smaller and smaller lines until you start making curves. Then, Once you get the main outline right, you can start adding more details. Working from large to small or general to specific usually is helpful. It also helps to start with a really really big brush so you can’t work in any detail to start. Have you given any of these methods a try?

I really like the color in your paintings, and I super appreciate all the instruction. I'm painting with gouache, but you've still helped me a ton, notably with the "chainsaw sculpting" metaphor that had me stop thinking so much in layers, and the "no more than 3 sittings" rule. The hardest thing for me is probably when you have a million shapes in a subject, especially when it's high-contrast light and dark against each other in complex patterns (foliage usually, but sequins or gravel or whatnot too).

I appreciate your videos, and you have inspired me to paint on a regular basis! I have trouble with the non-focal point of a landscape and how detailed to make it. I either miss the point I should have stopped, or I should be doing it differently.

I know the sky is the lightest value in a landscape, vertical's are the darkest and the ground plane is in the middle but I'm unsure about the water. My thinking is it fall's inbetween the sky and the ground plane. Would be grateful if someone could confirm if I'm right.
@omnesilere
3 жыл бұрын
Sure at noon... really the brightest plane is perpendicular to the light and fades as the angle moves towards parallel.. the light is often more interesting when its not from dead above but from the side. 45* from the front and 45* up, from the subject, is ideal for describing form with light and shadow according to one Da Vinci.
@GalleryBry
3 жыл бұрын
Water can be all of the above. The Carlson planes are helpful but not always true. For water, it can be very dark near the viewer because they can see to the bottom. And then it is often very bright farther away because light is reflected off the water. But that’s not always true, as illustrated in this painting. Here the water is brighter near the viewer and darker further away where the water is deeper. The best method is to train your eye to see value so you can capture any reference you choose. Have you ever tried monochrome painting to work in only values? It’s very helpful.

@RatusMax

I have 3 fundamantal rules #1 Paint what you see, not what you think you see, #2 Learn your tools/materials well. #3 Always paint what gives the painting it's identity before adding details. I split them into 3 to work on them individually although they work together to make a painting. #1 is about form, structure, etc. This focuses on building the foundation of the painting. The initial parts that the paint will lay on. This is important because it is the first part that will make or break things like likeness. Some people do underpaintings, some people start with a line drawing. #2 I about learning your materials and tools well. Forget about painting something. The true question is can you predict what will happen when you mix a certain paint together? Do you know how the stroke of the brush will look like? Do you know how your hand will react when painting some type of shape? This portion is about getting a feel of how your tools and materials interact with each other and building that memory of guessing what will happen. #3 I developed after watching paintcoach videos. When you start building the painting, we should be going dark to light, thin to thick, painting in the larger shapes first. It's ok not to get the color correct at the larger shapes. As we get closer to the middle shapes, you should also had been adjusting the paint closer to the actual color and values. Then as we get to the even smaller shapes, the colors should be even closer. . It does not have to be the exact colors for the painting to work. The values trump over color at any point of the day. Then when we have that rough draft of what looks like a person, we can start dialing in the details. Your problem most likely lies in knowing what colors to mix. DrawMixPaint has a tutorial about such things you might find helpful. I was blown away when he used yellow to lighten a color and not white. That was the missing link for me. I also recommend watching Emma Jane Lefebvre. Although she uses watercolor, she shows how to mix up different kinds of colors and also taught me to keep a color wheel in handy. I always looked at color wheels throughout school and never knew why it was important.

I have recently purchased a bunch of stuff to get going but one thing that still confuses me is what to paint on. I have heard that different boards or panels are not desirable by buyers, that stretched canvas over frames are best. But then I hear you talk about linen and you clearly paint on panels. So can you address this in a Paint Talk video if you haven't already. I've watched a lot of you older videos but have not found that talked about. btw, I also have a channel, so would love for you to check it out. ;)
