Nietzsche has some interesting remarks about talent, that it can be a vampire, it's not entirely a boon, even for the ultra-successful. Especially the ultra-successful. The more adored you are, the more money you're raking in, the easier it is to just keep ploughing forward without considering the cost to your health, to your soul.

Totally agree with Christie’s take !! It seems to me that the film tries to balance out the tragic documentary, to continually bring us back to and focus on her achievements as much as if not more than the tragedy!! It’s certainly not perfect and yet again another film that’s too long, a real theme this year, but it was better than critics keep telling us!

I liked the film but we didn’t learn anything new about Whitney. I’m a massive Whitney fan and there were several inconsistencies with the timeline and that was frustrating. One thing that throws me off is during her “My love is your love” tour they were using songs that she never sang during that era and using her her 1990 vocals instead of her 1999 vocals. Any whitney fan knows that her voice in 1999 didn’t sound like 1990. They totally skipped the waiting to exhale era/just whitney era/being Bobby brown and I felt Bobby brown was barely in this film. I also felt that they left out the fun Whitney. Whitney was hilarious and they didn’t showcase that at all in this. Overall the script was weak. I thought Naomi Ackie did a good job as Whitney but she looked nothing like her which was quite distracting. But she totally nailed Whitney’s speaking voice. I give the movie a C. If they ever do another Whitney biopic, it needs to be a series. Much like the series they did on Aretha Franklin last year called Genius: Aretha.

Great conversation! I love all of the points brought up by you two. I sorta feel like we've been doing these safe biopic films for awhile now and they barely have legs in the awards campaign season. I'm thinking of the Aretha Franklin biopic recently. Full disclosure, I didn't see it, but even the stuff around it felt blah... adding to the possible point that some stars cannot be recaptured in a way that does them justice. But I dunno. I feel someone in the future will try this with David Bowie and the same problems will arise. I'm a massive Bowie fan, but an average actor probably can't convey how great that alien man was. Timothy is about to play Bob Dylan, right? He's wonderful but I dunno.

I will compare this to Judy (2019). I'm glad we got to see it but I would not go a second time. He loved Elvis (2022) but I didn't appreciate it so much. We also saw that once in the theater. By far his favorite part of Respect (2021) was watching the real Aretha perform over the closing credits. We both loved Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman a lot. Why is it that EVERY SINGLE REVIEW OF A BIOPIC has to include a discussion about why or whether the film was told in a "conventional" way? Human beings have a certain life cycle--we are born, we live, and then we die. Furthermore, this obsessive point of contention seems to ONLY be about films. I just read a biography of Hamilton that was widely praised (and was the source material for the play). No one that I know of criticized that book or other biographies like it because it was told in a conventional way. The important differences between biographies lies not in the manner of the storytelling, but in the details of the life portrayed.
@cjwright79

trying to think of a biopic that starts in the middle or end.... plenty of movies sure. Fight Club. But a biopic... it just wouldn't make too much sense, why would you as the director even think that might be a good stylistic choice. But maybe I'm being too rigid here in thinking about what it means for a movie to be conventional.

Hooray to Katie for talking about the elephant in the room. Naomi Ackie is totally miscast. She's talented, but physically wrong for the part. She looks nothing like Whitney. Whitney was GORGEOUS. In the movie she's referred to as having "model looks." Naomi Ackie is attractive in an average way, and certainly does not have model looks. That bugged me throughout the entire movie. I believe that it impacted the box office. The film bombed. Has Hollywood not learned their lesson form the Solo debacle? Some directors and producers think talent is all that matters, but fans want to see perfect casting for their icons.

I wasn't a Whitney fan per se, but I completely recognize her phenomenal voice (and beauty). A studio I worked at in the 80's and 90's mastered all of her records, right from the first, so I feel a natural interest in this. Although I love Rock Docs, I don't usually like music biopics. I know a lot about the nuts and bolts of this stuff and a lot of the time that gets in my way of enjoyment. Watching someone lip sync FULL VERSIONS of every song???? I don't know!! I just love the diligence, the moral rectitude that Katie would be thinking about the reasons why this picture has been made. We get so laser-focused on the artistic merits of a film that we rarely stop to think about the money men behind the scenes pulling the strings, initiating a project - why are they doing this, is there more to the story than just the standard 'we think it can make lots of money'. Considering the way Whitney's life ended, it seems like there wasn't really anyone in her life who truly cared about her, or her heart's not just going to give out like before she turns fifty. She was a slim woman, it's not like obesity did her in. I guess lifelong cocaine use is not going to help much with the old cardiosvasculars. But what interpersonal failures were leading her to cocaine use in the first place, what kind of pain is she trying to escape from. She needed a good man in her life, and Bobby Brown clearly was lightyears away from being that. I wish Kevin Costner had thought to call her up now and again, he could have lifted her spirits and given her reasons to live. Bodyguard my ass, you had ONE job! But I suspect, in the end, Whitney did not look forward to a life after fifty. She was such a sparky vital energetic presence, maybe the prospect of losing her youthful good looks, the bounce in her step, was an alarming thing, maybe she wanted to preserve her legend as a sexy diva by cutting it short, maybe her death wasn't entirely unplanned. Kind of like how a great athlete wants to retire from their sport when they're still relatively dominant at it, instead of slowly degrading into a shadow of their former self that could really tarnish their image in the public eye.

This is such a idiotic idea. To state that she ended her life because she didn't want to age... Have you ever seen the Whitney biography? All the tragedy she went though...and to cite old age out of all the things happening to her is insane reasoning. It's obvious why she died. Addiction is a disease.
