Relegation works better for some sports than others. You'd need every single team in the "lower" league to be ready to accommodate the number of fans, quantity of merchandise, and level of play that could come with a promotion. Looking at the list of teams, the average G-League stadium capacity is around 8,000; the average attendance at an NBA game is around 17-20,000. And these teams are billion-dollar media and rights franchises, you'd be knocking hundreds of millions of dollars off their value just through relegation. It would mean years of legal battles even if the NBA _wanted_ to implement it. It's not exactly something American basketball fans are asking for, either. G-League teams don't really have fans the same way local football clubs do in Europe, in the sense that most people don't know or care about any, and they're usually tied to a bigger city with a "real" team anyways.

Relegation makes no sense for the nba and will NEVER happen. 1- there’s no lower leagues that aren’t affiliated so relegation makes no sense. 2- the skill gap between nba talent and non nba talent is so large that you can’t put a g league roster in the nba. Like the Celtics can’t get relegated for the maine red lobsters and if they did it would just be the Celtics roster wearing maine red lobster jerseys. 3- it makes no sense because there is a draft. Being bad means high draft pick, but being relegated would be the #1 pick goes to a team not even in the nba.

I'd argue that you can't do promotion and relegation with yourself. However, ignoring that, you'd need to expand the NBA to 36 or 40 teams. Add six new cities to the bottom and dump the 12 worst teams into the Second Division. Beyond that, you'd have to dismantle college basketball and have the colleges license the names of their teams to pro organisations, similar to how "university" soccer teams in South America operate.

1 way to make it slightly more possible is if the stadiums/arenas were held as public property if the team used a certain amount of public money to be built. This would help encourage teams to build the places themselves to eliminate the possibility of being demoted. This way the promoted team could move into a arena. Another thing to do would be to not do this yearly, but every couple years 2, 3 or even 4 years to keep some stability. At the end of each cycle, they could have a vote on which teams to move down/up, or just do based on record. There are several reasons why this wouldn't work, but there is nearly always some cons with every positive for a solution. One of the biggest cons would be if a team was always on the cusp of moving up/down, they could end up being moved to an entirely new region based on the availability of locations at the time.

You literally have teams who have won the top competitions in the whole continent in the second tier because the fortunes of gone so horribly. It makes teams not be lazy bastards. It wouldn’t do any harm in both the NBA and the NFL their teams had to actually be competitive and fight to stay in the top tier. When you look at for instance, Leeds United, who are currently playing in the championship. They have a long and proud history but again they’ve not been good enough so they end up getting demoted and playing in the lower league but also being relegated means that teams have a chance to Deal with stuff behind the scenes which is clearly not helping matters.

It would be a huge loss for the league if popular teams (Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox, Lakers, Warriors, Celtics, etc.) were relegated, so why does the union support relegation? @@gvngbvngiggy well… that’s an issue on the governors of each state, they always help out their billionair friends. And I truely agree with you, PRIVATE TEAMS should be PRIVATE MATTERS, and they should pay for their stuff not go after Tax Payers. I truely find it gross that they use tax payers for their billionair friends but hey! You’ll have an A team.. 🤷♂️🤷♂️

Just make it an actual lottery. Use an old powerball machine and each team gets one ping-pong ball. Everyone who misses the playoffs has an equal shot at the number 1 spot. Now the team that fought to the end and finished 11th in the west has the same chance at picking No. 1 as anyone with 10 wins.

But now teams that are battling for a lower playoff seed would rather lose on purpose and have a chance at a high pick than make the 8th seed and lose in the 1st round

To make it competitive. Instead of hoarding all the best players on a single team that wins the league 10 years in a row.

Shocker, Americans don't know how a meritocracy works but claims to be a country that promotes it. Change your model and don't allow feeder teams.

This is a stupid take, having a big city doesn't always equate to good management. If it's based on merit, only the best managed, best playing, and best coached teams should win, not the team with the most money to throw at their issues. No such thing as "feeder" teams, it's just that EVERYONE has a chance to compete because we put a salary cap in place to keep our biggest cities from shitting on the rest of the league (unlike the garbage ass relegation system used in Soccer).

Feel bad for everyone else who has to watch only the cities with the most money win, American sports actually have parity which makes it way more enjoyable. Maybe take a page out of our book and establish a salary cap so other teams can win and make your snoozefest 0-0 games become thrilling 1-0 games!

Why should there be risk? Owners do not invest in risky leagues. I hate relegation. I hate it when my favorite team goes to the second division.
