Out today's interviewee:
Stefania Wernik (born 1944 in KL Auschwitz-Birkenau), wife of Jan Wernik. Her mother was arrested by the Germans in April 1944, while she was attempting to cross the border between the Third Reich and the General Government. Two months pregnant at the time, she initially kept the information about her pregnancy to herself. When she was about to be transported to Ravensbrück, a friend told a German guard about her pregnancy. Stefania Wernik's mother stayed in Auschwitz and gave birth to a healthy child, despite being left with no assistance. On a number of occasions, Dr. Josef Mengele took little Stefania Wernik away from her mother to subject her to medical experiments. Luckily, the mother and the child both lived to see the liberation of the camp on 27 January 1945.
