WHERE WAS THIS VIDEO BACK WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL?! But props to that teacher for making things even slightly easier. I think my school used to have a newsletter type announcement for honorary Halloween but also my school went from Elementary K-7, straight to high school 8-12. So we were expected to “mature” very suddenly. But hey, in grade 12 I did a mild Bat Girl on Halloween and had to debate euthanasia in front of everyone in English class so that was wild. One time my school had a thing called Mario day which was when you could dress up as a Mario character to school, since I love cosplay and stuff, I decided to dress up as Mario to school, hat, gloves, and even overalls. When I went to school that day I realized that I was the only person to dress up that day. Literally no one in my grade or the other grades dressed up. I felt so embarrassed after a while and somebody stole my hat midday (they gave it back to me at the end of the day but I’m still pissed) I got compliments from teachers and some of my friends but some people looked at me weirdly and someone at my lunch table said I looked cringe. I want to try dressing up again if there’s ever an event but I doubt I’ll actually do that because I felt really embarrassed.

Aww this is so sad. I was very much the same kind of "outcast" in high school, however, I NEVER let other people's judgements or opinions affect me. Because of that, I never got picked on for liking weird things! I mean I collected BJDs (asian ball-jointed dolls that resembled anime characters) and was really crazily obsessed with the British show "Mighty Boosh" that no one knew about, and OWNED it so hard and even flaunted it, that I got a mention in the yearbook about it by one of my friends and I loved it. I found friends that truly respected me and my interests, some of those friends I've kept for life. I think the moral of the story for anyone who's still in high school, is OWN your quirks, and trust me it will all be okay!

The same thing was for me in high school. No one "really" dressed up. You had some people who did, but most people generally wore normal clothes. I too even did cosplay, but without the wigs because I figured it would be "a distraction" to learning. I was more afraid in college to dress up/cosplay, but I found SURPRISINGLY more people would dress up in college and generally there was more cosplayers. Not so much community college, but university, hell fing yeah! I don't understand why I would be afraid. I think for me it was more being stared at or made fun of. Back when I did a crappy Nekozawa cosplay, I wore it in high school and one kid I had class with thought I was the hamburger helper guy. :/ So...I think it varies. If you have a certain click, I think more people will join, but others generally not so much.

That never happened to me, but I had a sort-of similar experience a few times in elementary school. They had this yearly tradition (I think they've subsequently stopped doing it) where every time Halloween fell on a weekday, all the students would wear their costumes and there'd be a sort of parade around the school, so everyone got to show off their trick-or-treat outfits - and of course, I wore mine, too. The trouble was, I was a weird and imaginative kid, so I almost always wore weird and imaginative costumes I'd come up with that made sense to no one but me. One year, I went as a 'light imp'. What is a light imp? I don't know - I'm not even sure I knew at the time - but that's what I was. I wore white thermal underwear painted with glow-in-the-dark paint, and all the little glowy light-up Halloween doodads I could fit on myself, and I probably looked pretty cool walking down the street in the dark that night, but at school I was just a dork wearing thermal underwear. 'I'm a light imp!' I proudly proclaimed to everybody, and nobody knew what the hell I was talking about. Or then there was the time everyone thought I was a ghost - because I looked almost exactly like the classic Halloween ghost - but no, I was not a ghost. I was a white owl. That one got me some weird looks, too. (At least it was comprehensible that time.) It wasn't as bad as it could have been, because the grade of costumes most elementary schoolers wear is not very high anyway, and I lacked most of the necessary social awareness at age nine or whenever to realize that I may have been making a fool of myself - I was just so damn proud to be a light imp - but in retrospect, it's a miracle I didn't get picked on. Maybe it was just because everyone already knew I was a weirdo, so they didn't figure it was worth pointing it out.

Yeah we would dress up for halloween at my school and one time I decided it was a good idea to come in as my homemade Toothless costume from how to train your dragon. For starters all the other kids had come in in casual costumes like a normal lookin kid from a book or a cat and then there was tiny child me, falling over cause someone had stepped on my giant tail and bobbing up and down so I could see my wings flap. Not my best moment, but I survived and luckily I was quite young so people didnt hardcore bully me about it. Still pretty awkward. Like I had dragon gloves and a mask and everything. Oh, I did this too in my first year of college. I dressed up as Death the Kid, full wig and everything (he has short black hair and I have long blond hair, so it was an obvious change). At my high school, regardless of the grade, people dressed up for Halloween so, like you, I thought the college in near proximity would be totally chill with it too. It was awkward being one of the only noticable people going all out (thanks, poodle-skirt girl!), but no one really made a comment against it. I missed my trick-or-treating stage, so I wanted to take any opportunity to dress up. I may go a little tamer this year though. 😅

That's funny, because in my school experience, I think the only years we dressed up WERE in high school! Our student parliament always planned these big Halloween assemblies, with a costume contest, games... It was a whole thing. We also ran a can drive around that time, so people would be encouraged to ask for canned goods while they were already out trick-or-treating. HOWEVER I totally understand you being nervous about wearing costumes to school lol. I was just getting into cosplay in grade 8 / 9, so I was excited to wear a costume to school, but it feels so weird when you barely see anyone else dressed up. I also wore Dante (Devil May Cry 4) one year, and my cooking teacher thought I was a girl LMAOOO

I'm super late to comment, but I wanted to share my own Middle School/High School experiences with this. There were some times for Halloween that it did fall on the weekend, but I dressed up the Friday before with some friends and the rest of the school was like "wtf" but that was honestly mostly in Middle School. More people dressed up in High School, weirdly enough. But I will mention that for WHATEVER REASON, there was a day when my friends and I thought it was a great idea to just randomly show up to school in cosplay. Like... I think it was sometime in February myself and a few of my friends just came to school dressed as random characters. I was Seras from Hellsing. I don't remember anything that prompted us, either. But at the time, I wasn't embarrassed, we tried to be like super weird and different. Looking back, though, I can't help but cringe super hard at my actions. lol

Just gonna say, you were so lucky to be able to dress up in middle school! My middle school always holds a after-school dance and this year I remember that some girls were dressed up as My Hero Academia characters (I saw a Todoroki, two or three Deku's and two Bakugou's) and others had like cat costumes as well. But those who wore their costumes were scolded because they didn't want us wearing costumes unless we were in green team, which was holding the 'haunted hallway' event. It sucks because the girls had really well-done cosplays of Todoroki, Bakugo and Deku.

About one third of the kids in my High school actually dress up (me included) and I’m going full out Roman Torchwick this year. I am a massive Nerd, and I hang out with members of the Fan Club, and almost all of the fan club dress up.

Since I'm in the UK we weren't able to dress up in School for Halloween/honorary Halloween (because uniforms) but when I was in college and then uni, there were a few people who would dress up/wear halloween themed outfits. I'll always remember one guy from my seminars who showed up entirely dressed as Link one halloween - it was actually kind of impressive

I'm very grateful that my high school does honorary halloween cause there is a costume contest that the school holds. Except one year, no one dressed up because we had a shooting threat and honorary halloween was revoked by the principal

I'm a new sub, binging my way through your videos! this reminds me of the time in 3rd grade when we were all invited to dress up like Charlotte's Web characters at school. I came dressed as templeton the rat.... on the WRONG DAY. I was mortified!

Not only did we dress up for Halloween in highschool (we got extra credit in our Physics class if we did), but we also dressed up in college (we got extra credit in our Calculus class). Though I did have a similar experience in college, people changed into costume only for the Calculus class and I was awkwardly the only one in cosplay outside of that class (because why would I bring a change of clothes??? like it's Halloween). I was wearing the Flash costume made by my grandma.... A beacon of bright red spandex.

something kind of similar happened to me, but it wasn't Halloween, it was spirit week. I was cosplaying todoroki from bnha and kids just kept trying to pull my wig off and i felt embarrassed as heck, i even caught these girls taking pics of me in lunch and putting it on snapchat to make fun of me

Meanwhile in my school, we don't celebrate Halloween, but we do celebrate Chinese New Year. And every CNY, you'd see a lot of people come in animal onesies (specifically the big thing was a onesie of the zodiac animal of the year) and there would always be a big pile of kids in animal onesies in the hall before morning assembly. Other kids would wear animal hats, ears, and all and there wasn't any of the "oh ewwww furries lol so cringey". Even people who weren't into furry stuff liked to borrow the animal ears and hats. Art school was fun.

I love watching these videos because they somehow remind me of my younger self lol. When I was a high school sophomore Halloween was on a week day and I was SO EXCITED, I wanted to go out at night and trick and treat and everything but I had no friends heh, so I decided to do something "mild" and casually dress up at school. That "casually dressing up" ended up being 15 year old me dressed in a very weird random outfit and a very realistic, creepy, crooked full teeth smile painted on my face with makeup. Everyone looked at me all weird and I ended up going to the bathroom and washing off half of the smile because somehow I thought that would make it less unsettling for my classmates and teachers HAHDHAJA

My primary school had a Storymania thing where you could dress up as any character you wanted that day, it's still one of the best days I've had, don't know why we never did it again

One takeaway from this though is, this is how trends start cuz like if one person does it some people may look at you like "huh..maybe I should've dressed up too" lol so I mean ye. People in my school don't really dress up for Halloween, they mostly just wear onesies but I go full out with latex, fake blood, wigs etc.

Also thinking back I remember that some of my university profs would give people candy if they dressed up for class. At that point I was way too lazy/tired to even think about dressing up for Halloween at university but it was a fun time for sure!

At my middle and elementary school, we have a spirit week and we get to cosplay! No wigs, no makeup, no armor, no skin tight clothes, no weapons. Basically impossible to cosplay but teachers are pretty lenient

At my highschool, not a ton of people dress up even if the day is on actual halloween, but some do. In middle school I don't remember people dressing up much either, and i jsut dont ever to avoid situations like yours :') the weird thing is that they dont even really do anything holiday related at school. Like it was halloween on an actual school day this year and the teachers were just like welcome to your regularly scheduled day of torture everyone. theyre just kind of allergic to fun at my school

I'm from Colombia and here most schools go from 1st grade to 11th grade (1 to 5 elementary and 6 to 11 secondary), at my school Halloween is awesome because it's up to the 11th graders to plan fun activities and encourage all of the younger students to dress up (and most of them actually do except those who think it's for kids or cringy), some years we even give prizes to the best costumes! I'm in 11th grade now so it's gonna be really cool to plan everything!

We weren't really allowed to dress up on Halloween in high school because of "safety reasons" or something stupid, but when I transferred to a different campus with a very small group of kids I had like 4 teachers and they all knew I cosplayed and they actually loved seeing me wear my cosplays to school.

Like a lot of schools in America, we had Spirit Week. Each day was a different theme to dress up for. I never liked the themes/had anything that really fit the theme, so I rarely participated. But on Halloween, when I wore small, rounded horns as a part of my cosplay, I was told to take them off because they’re “distracting” (aka what you’re told when you have something teachers don’t like). Basically after elementary, none of my schools were really accepting of dressing for Halloween. But surprisingly, no one ever said anything about the small dragon shoulder puppet I brought for special days, like right before a holiday break!

My High school wouldn’t allow for us to dress for Halloween, but we would get a spirit week with specific dress themes. There was one that was a character day so I show up with my homemade Link costume (very poorly done as I was still an amateur cosplayer) and I stuck everything in my bag. The costume was fine, but since my mom was not into the idea of wearing wigs, I hid mine in my bag and at school struggled to fit my waist length hair into it. Long story short, the wig was a disaster all day and kept coming off and now I have a pixie cut XD

A lot of went to the same middle school that went to my high school, and in middle school we weren’t allowed to dress up at all. So, everyone always dressed up for Halloween in high school, even if it was the day before Halloween. Also, our school kind of made a big deal out of it and showed off everyone’s costumes as well. Even the teachers dressed up sometimes.

I live in France and Halloween is always during fall break so there's never really anything happening at school for Halloween, but we do dress up for Carnival in February or March. My high school always had a half day for Carnival so we'd have class in the morning and in the afternoon we had a parade around the neighborhood, we'd go through the nearby elementary schools and dance with the kids there, it was pretty awesome. People would really bring their A game on costumes, one year two girls dressed up as the main characters from Up and they had a big cardboard house with all the balloons that they could walk around in, there was a photo booth and you could take pictures and then buy a print of it the following week, it was a lot of fun! I only got into cosplay a couple years after high school so my costumes weren't anything special but it was really cool to see everyone going all out.

Such a funny story! We don't celebrate Halloween, but I had a similar situation when we took souvenir photos and videos in the last year of high school. The photographer told us to prepare and dress up somehow - I took it literally and dressed up as a porcelain doll. In full makeup, false eyelashes and wig. Fortunately, my friend also dressed up as a doll, so I wasn't alone in this mess: D

Oh boy, Halloween at my high school was pretty big. There was actually a competition in October where you would choose the Halloween costume for your homeroom teacher and they wouldn't know until the day of what they got. And we always had an assembly where our teachers would basically do a catwalk through the auditorium and then we would award teachers and students according to different categories. My drama teacher was also super into Halloween and one year she made us do improv games and devising activities as the characters we were dressed up as which was super sick because I was Katara that year. I think it's really in university where the whole dressing up for school thing dies. I mean I do see the occasional inflated T-Rex or Banana costume on campus, but never a cosplayer.
