Can you wash a tufted rug? I finally washed, yes WASHED my tufted test rugs to find out! A while ago I tested Bond AAT1132, Roberts 3095 and Elmers Glue-All on Primary Backing Fabric, Monk's Cloth and Burlap. I sorted these test rugs by glue and placed each set of tufted swatches in their own laundry bag (the best decision I could have made!) so that I could easily see which ones held up and which ones didn't. I washed them on a regular cold wash cycle with a little detergent and I let them air dry noting if there were any further changes between them damp and dry.
The end results were an adventure to say the least. It was pretty clear just looking at the laundry bags as I pulled them out of the washing machine that some of the adhesive and backing fabrics had held up better than others.
Bond AAT1132 held up the best of all the three adhesives. There were almost no changes to it other than some cracking but I'm concerned any repeated washing would not hold up and the adhesive would eventually fail. It also held the backings themselves together the best with very little fraying on burlap and monks cloth and none whatsoever on primary backing fabric.
Roberts 3095 was a mess of half melted adhesive that left the laundry bag and my hands sticky with a gross yellow film. While it held up on the monks cloth and primary backing fabric it was unable to hold the burlap together at all and this swatch fell apart the most.
Elmers Glue-All went missing and hasn't been seen since. This was expected but I'm still surprised by how cleanly it washed out. The swatches felt like they had never been glued at all and it showed. There was significant loss of yarn and breakdown of all the backing fabrics with burlap suffering from the wash process the most.
So, can you wash your tufted rugs? I would NOT. Even though Bond did the best I'm still concerned it would eventually fall apart given all the cracking it did just from one wash. It might be ok with rare cleanings using one of those handheld steam vacs but I wouldnt do much more than that and even then only if it had gotten extremely soiled. Otherwise I would stick to blotting up any spills immediately and then lightly using a damp cloth if necessary.
If you were unsure of how your rug had been backed I would definitely err on the side of caution and avoid anything that would soak your rug. These are handmade works of art that should be treated as such!
