This movie may just be the greatest thing DreamWorks has ever released. The animation is incredible, it follows the story as written in the Bible almost verbatim, the score is perfect, (infact, this movie won an Oscar for Best original score,) and the bond, turned rivalry, turned hatred between Moses and Rameses was so fantastically and maturely written. Nothing the studio has released since has quite topped this in terms of pure cinematic scale.
@judeancupcake7553
3 ай бұрын
It does not follow the story verbatim. For example, it is not mentioned that Moses's mother becomes his milk nurse, or that Moses actually had a stutter, etc. But it is very much fitting into the narrative well enough for it to be a Passover favorite and wonderful representation of Jewish culture and belief.

@@BillyBinges Dan is right, although I consider Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron to be Dreamworks’ finest as well, despite being an underrated gem somehow. The reason why you didn’t saw their own intro for this movie is because this was a time before Dreamworks became another animated film-making company. The score was provided by none other than the legendary Hans Zimmer who did most scores of many memorable movies over the past 30 years, a nod with the Lion King that won him first Oscar for it and then later Dune. It showcases of how faith can truly help us overcome any obstacle that stands in our way, whether you’re a believer or not. What judeancupcake is saying that at least, half of this story is true to the source material since they were many parts that doesn’t go along with the original but it was very grandeur nonetheless. “When You Believe” is truly an uplifting song that makes see the big picture among the grand scheme of things, even after going through so much pain and loss. All it takes is one person to light the fuse and when it detonates, a whisper will become a roar.

The brother relationship is done so well, when rameses says that’s the ONLY reason you returned. Rameses has probably been thinking about him for years wondering if he’s alive and their relationship is immediately and forever changed and Moses has obviously kept him in his thoughts because he kept the ring but he can’t even say he came to see his brother. When Moses was the only person rameses could confide in and be himself and trust. And for Moses to have to see his childhood home and people he knew laid to waste. They did this so well. I could talk about the lyrics and scenes and the story FOREVER. The intentionality of it all is unmatched.

So Moses and his family were reunited in the end. It is also believed that he had another wife who was an Ethiopian (who we call african today).

She actually left him. Apparently, the Hebrew were very racist towards her, especially his sister Miriam. They killed his children because they were dark. He wouldn't do anything about it, so his wife left him. He died alone and miserable among people who saw him as a foreigner. The story is one of tragedy he could have been a prince. He could have delivered his people and given them Egypt. But he chose his birth family over the family who raised him, and it ruined his life.

Michelle Pfeiffer (Tzipporah, Moses’ wife) and Ralph Fiennes (Rameses) did both the speaking and singing voices of their characters. “Playing With the Big Boys” is done for comedic effect in the movie, but FYI, Jonathan Young and Caleb Hyles have done a metal version here on KZitem that’s truly scary. They’ve done covers of most of the songs from this movie, and from a few Disney movies as well (like “Hunchback of Notre Dame”). 35:20 If you’ve seen “The Ten Commandments,” you might remember that at this point, Charlton Heston goes marching out of Pharaoh’s palace in prophet mode, preaching at the top of his lungs. This Moses stumbles out of the palace, then breaks down and weeps.

I've seen this movie so many times. Thanks, Billy, for this reaction. The song When You Believe was by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. It's one of my favorite songs to this day. #Bingers: The Swan Princess, Lion King 2: Simba's Pride, The Borrowers, The Mouse Detective and Oliver & Company.

about the opening having no characterized features for the film: this is dreamwork’s FIRST release i believe. they entered the scene swinging with this movie, but this was still their first swing so some things hadn’t been quite cemented yet.

Grew up with this movie. I've been watching it again and again over 20 years, and it still gives me shivers. As soon as I hear the first 3 notes of 'Deliver Us' and 'Heavens Eyes', it's over; I'm ugly crying. Whenever life gets too hard, I try to watch this movie. It helps me feel grateful to be alive and remember I can weather any storm.

For those that don't know, Moses mother's name was or is *Habibi*
@LakaciaLloyd

I could’ve sworn it was Yocheved. Habibi is a pet name for a mom or grandmom, right?

@@LakaciaLloydI know "Habibi" is like, "darling" or "dear" in Arabic. So yeah a pet name. But maybe also a name?
@LakaciaLloyd
3 ай бұрын
@@YazzyDream It could definitely be a name, but it’s not Moses’s mother’s name. In the movie, Miriam said “ You were born of our mother Yocheved (sp?)”. It’s been a long time since I’ve read Exodus, so I don’t know if that was her actual name or made up for the movie.

@@LakaciaLloyd Exodus 6:20 and Numbers 26:59 says what's her name, it says Jochebed (יוכבד Yōḵeḇeḏ), I think the name made up for the movie was the pharaoh's name, on the Bible never said what his name

Exodus 6:20 and Numbers 26:59 says her name, it says Jochebed (יוכבד, Yōḵeḇeḏ), Habibi sounds Arabic, maybe it's some sort of translation for the Arabic translation?

If you want a true shock, go look through the casting for this show. It was completely star packed. I LOVE it. Also if you like covers, you should check out Jonathan Young's Prince of Egypt covers. They are AMAZING. I love this movie so much. I used to watch it on Sundays after church 😂 and even though I'm not religious anymore, it still packs such a powerful punch and the music is aaaammmmaaaaazing.

The other movie is 'Joseph, King of Dreams'. As Joseph is Moses' grandfather several times back, it is the prequel to Prince of Egypt.

The kid is singing in Hebrew. I think it's a prayer. Or a passover song. I only heard it for a second on the reaction and I haven't watched the movie in some time. I'm sure I'd know it automatically if I watch the movie during Pesach. Aaron's story arc is certainly interesting in this one, different than the Bible where he's designated as Moses' spokesperson, front man, etc. Moses goes "I can't really talk" and G-d is all "Aaron will do the talking for you." This sometimes is read literally as if he has a stutter but also could just be an excuse. Either way the entire book of Deuteronomy (Devarim) is Moses talking the entire time beginning with "I can't go to Israel and it's your fault" and then adding some more laws about what to do in Israel.

Fun fact: The plagues really happened. There are records of them. Go look up the scientific explanations for them (or believe God did them, you do you). What's ALSO cool about this movie (aside from being, you know, a phenomenal piece of art) is that it was heralded by well-known, worldwide leaders from all three Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) as a faithful and respectful adaptation of the original story of Passover in the book of Exodus.

You should totally react to the staged musical version of this movie. It’s so much deeper hearing the songs in from a performer and seeing real facial expressions.

I wonder how many people have noticed that in that scene where guard was killed - slaves are forced to clean up mess with sand that Moses and Ramses did the day before. Moses looks at slaves and realize what he create a lot of work to do for them, that's why he is also so frustrated.

One of the greatest animated movies ever! You finally got to it! Now you gotta check out Joseph: King of Dreams. It was direct-to-DVD and had a lower budget, but it’s the same studio, and technically it’s the story of how the Hebrews ended up in Egypt in the first place. Cast is stacked and the music is good, too. #bingers
