In the book Ron wasn't riding the knight. He was moving around on the floor in place of the piece just like the other 2. When he sacrificed himself fir the win the queen smashed him over the head with her arm, knocking him out. Harry didn't kill Quirrell either in the book. He held on to Quirrell's arm, causing burns and pain to both of them. He passed out just as Dumbledore arrived to help. Quirrell died when Voldemort abandoned his body. Quirrell was so weakened vy Voldemort's possession and his burns that he didn't survive without the parasite of Voldemort inside him.

Yes, 'Philosopher's Stone', the British title, and 'Sorcerer's Stone', the American title, are the same book. For some reason, the American publisher didn't think American readers would know what philosopher's stone was Keep the incident at the zoo in mind. It will play an important part in the next film. The other Nicholas is the ghost Sir Nicholas de Mimsey-Porpington, aka Nearly-Headless Nick. Nicholas Flamel was a real philosopher of the 14th century. The chess game was filmed several months after the entrance into the room. During that time, Rupert Grint (Ron) went through a growth spurt, so he was a couple inches taller. The director had Ron ride the knight chess piece so the height difference between the actors wouldn't be apparent. One reason why the magic feels so real is that J.K. Rowling based a lot of it on actual medieval magical beliefs. A good example is the mandrake root, which played an important role in the next film.

As far as normal people not seeing the magic being done around them...my best understanding is that it works like the Perception Filter in Doctor Who. They see it, but they don't notice it. A spell makes them not want to see it or retain it. The name, Philosopher's Stone is the name of the book and the British release of the movie. They worried American children wouldn't know what a philosopher was. So they changed the name to Sorcerer's Stone for the American release. Apparently this is not unusual in the movie industry.
@christianseibold3369

I think the first chapter of this book explains this very well. There are multiple methods to keep muggles from seeing magic, but one of them is muggles' natural tendency to explain away anything that they see as odd. Rather than thinking it's magic, they find some sort of reasoning that they think makes sense, so it's not actually a spell but just human psychology. This is an effect that happens in real life, too, actually, so it's somewhat realistic.
@peterjackson4763

The name change was made for the book. So it was the publishing industry, not the movie one to blame. The movies then followed the book and they had to film every mention of the Philosopher's Stone again as the Sorcerer's Stone.

So the reason why Harry is dumped at the Dursleys and has to go there for at least a month in the summer holidays is because of what Lily Potter did that night which made Voldemort into the spirit. What Lily did was Ancient Magic - sacrificial magic where she willingly sacrificed her life for Harry. Voldemort had given her a chance to "step aside," but she refused, thus activating the magical protection. So when Voldemort casted the Killing Curse (avada kedavra) onto baby Harry, Lily's magic protected him, deflecting the Killing Curse onto Voldemort. Due to things which I won't reveal, Voldemort didn't die, but instead turned into the spirit we see in the film. As a result of the blood protection, Harry has to live with Petunia, his only maternal blood relative to reap the effects of Lily's protection until he becomes an adult (which in the Wizarding world is 17 instead of 18). It's unfortunate that his relatives are arseholes, but it's necessary for Harry to have Lily's protective magic for the sake of his safety in case Voldemort comes back to kill him again. It is because of her Ancient Magic that Voldermort/Quirrell are unable to touch him. This is a really important thing to keep in mind as you would see in the Goblet of Fire film, and later on in the last three films.

I used to work as a security officer there with access to all areas, so I've been in the great hall, which is not quite as big in real life and the quadrangle and cloisters where Ron insults Hermione and upsets her. The viaduct where the train goes across is Glenfinnan viaduct in Inverness shire, Scotland built in 1897 - 1901 and that train really does cross it. The dark forest is actually a place called black park which is situated next to the famous pinewood studios in Iver Heath, England where all the James bond and star wars movies are made. Each film gets better and darker but if I had to pick a favourite then it would definitely be the 3rd one, Prisoner of Azkaban. ( 5:37 ) The Philosopher's Stone was renamed for release in America specifically, the publishing house worried that American children wouldn't be interested in a piece of media that contained the word 'philosopher' because it sounded "too archaic", so they changed it to JK's suggestion of swapping the word to 'Sorcerer', essentially so that it would sound more ✨magic-y✨for the American kiddies. Keep in mind, the publishing house initially wanted to dumb it down to 'Harry Potter and The School of Magic' just to make super sure that America would understand it was a magic book. The dude at Scholastica didn't think the American's would understand the way it was connected to historical concepts of "magic", because philosophy for the USA apparently only links to the concept of scholarly works, and not... yknow, the entire ancient (defunct) scientific field of alchemy, history, and the literal real stores that it was inspired by. Basically, the Philosopher's Stone and Nicholas Flamel are real (well, the concept of creating the stone was real), and the Philosopher's Stone has *always* been referred to as such, since like... the 17th century. Nicholas Flamel was never a sorcerer or even called one, but he *was* a philosopher and scribe, and he *is* intrinsicly linked to medieval alchemy, which was an branch of ancient philosophy (and other) natural sciences that have been documented since early AD. Philosophical alchemy was never called sorcery (which was distinct from alchemy) - so apparently the dude from Scholastica decided that the entirety of USA's youth/parents of said youth probably didn't know what the world' philosopher' meant, they didn't care to learn, and would be so put-off upon simply seeing a word that looks school-ish that they wouldn't read it.

I'm happy u r starting this series, & I welcome u to the magical world of Harry Potter.😊 One of the things I wanted to discuss was the whole Mother's Love protection that Harry has. I think it might have been Voldemort who told Quirrell that it was an ancient magic when Quirrell cried "What is his magic?!" & his hand turned to ash. It was not only Lily Potter's love for her child that protected Harry, but her self sacrifice. There were 2 reasons why Dumbledore left baby Harry w/the Dursley's: 1. He didn't want Voldemort's followers to find him & 2. Petunia Dursley was his only living blood relative. Yes, it does suck that Harry has to go back to the Dursley's @ the end of term. Good thing it's only for summer vacation. Ok, they never explain this in the movies but do on the books. The reason why everyone refers to Voldemort as "He Who Must Not Be Named"/ "U Know Who" is because he put a tracking spell/curse on his name. So, if u say his name aloud, then he & his followers can find u. O, body of a horse & upper body of a man is a Centaur. It is the character symbol for Sagittarius. Minotaur is head of a bull & body of a large buff man.😊 U know, Hermione could have been sorted into RavenClaw because of her great intellect & thirst for knowledge, but was put in Gryffindor because of her fighting spirit, courage & loyalty. After u have watched the 3rd movie or watched the whole series, if u r curious about what would be your House, Wand & 1 other thing that I won't mention yet (U have to finish 3rd movie 1st.), there is a free Wizarding World app u can take the Pottermore quizzes on to find out. 1 thing for sure the sorting hat would have had difficulty placing me. I took the extended quiz & came out 50/50 for either HufflePuff/RavenClaw.😄 Anyway that was just something fun to do, & didn't know if u wanted to maybe do the quizzes on your channel since u r doing the movies. Ok, enough writing from me just wanted to say enjoyed your reaction & glad u r excited to get into his.😊

Definitely taking that quiz 👀 Thanks for letting me know about the curse attached to Voldemort’s name. That certainly makes saying his name more than just a “faux pas” like I initially thought.

It’s so fun watching younger people discover this series for the first time. In my day (old lady voice) we waited and waited for each new book release and then we waited and waited for each new film release! Looking forward to watching you take this journey and all the twists and turns!

I would like to welcome you to this world…. You can already see how one you can get lost in this world…. How it’s an escape to another world that is so much different than reality….. oh and I do not speak for all Slytherin but I assure you we Slytherin are not all bad…lol your going to really love this journey especially how you analyze the story lines and get so invested ….. I’m so very excited for you…. And yes I remember seeing every single movie when it came out in Theaters….. fun fact if you look up the birthdays of the cannon characters Ron’s is March 1, 1980….. I was also born on March 1, 1980!!! I know that is very telling of my age but I love it so much that I don’t care!!!

I agree so much about the real sets. I miss that in current movies. I really hope the new show is just as lived in and real.

Out of the 3, Rupert Grint was definitely the best actor. The other 2 sometimes sound less natural, even in the later hp movies

So there *is* a reason Harry has to go back to the Dursleys every year, but it'd be a bit of a spoiler to explain why now. However, it doesn't get answered in the movies, so make sure to come back to this when you reach Deathly Hallows!

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone are the same exact novel and movie. In fact, the Philosopher's Stone title is the actual original name of the book that the British author, JK Rowling gave to the story. But when it came time for the American release of the novel the publishers didn't think that Americans would ever understand that in medieval times a philosopher was what we call a sorcerer nowadays.📖🧙♂️⚗️🪄 When it came time to film the movie, the director and producers had the actors film two takes with them uttering the words "Philosopher's Stone" in one take and "Sorcerer's Stone" in a different take. This was done so that the American release of the movie will have all the wording as Sorcerer's Stone and the UK release will say Philosopher's Stone. 🎬 BTW, did you know that Max formally known as HBO Max is in the process of pre-production of making a TV version of the Harry Potter series? One of the executive producers is the author of the books, JK Rowling. So it will be far more truer to the novels. Each season will be a Harry Potter book. But they decided that instead of calling the first season Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone it will have the UK name instead which is Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. 📚🏰🧙🏻♀️🪄💖👍

The Weasleys were more than willing to take Harry in, but Dumbledore would not allow it. Dumbledore always insisted that Harry go back to his blood family, not gonna explain the reasons because I dont remember if it’s talked about in a later movie.

It's not really addressed in a later movie, but a couple other comments did give her that information.

12:38 Voldemort tried to do to Harry what he did to his parents: a curse of instant death. But because of the sacrifice Harry's mom did, Harry got a love protection against Voldemort, so the curse turned to Voldemort. The scar is a by-product of the failure of the curse.

Welcome to the incrediblely wonderful rabbit hole of a ride called the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Enjoy it well. 😊 This is the song that the Sorting Hat sings in the book version of Sorcerer's Stone/Philosopher's Stone before he sorted the first year's students into their houses; "Oh you may not think I'm pretty, But don't judge on what you see, I'll eat myself if you can find A smarter hat than me. You can keep your bowlers black, Your top hats sleek and tall, For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat And I can cap them all. There's nothing hidden in your head The Sorting Hat can't see, So try me on and I will tell you Where you ought to be. You might belong in Gryffindor, Where dwell the brave at heart, Their daring, nerve, and chivalry Set Gryffindors apart; You might belong in Hufflepuff, Where they are just and loyal, Those patient Hufflepuffs are true And unafraid of toil; Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw, if you've a ready mind, Where those of wit and learning, Will always find their kind; Or perhaps in Slytherin You'll make your real friends, Those cunning folks use any means To achieve their ends. So put me on! Don't be afraid! And don't get in a flap! You're in safe hands (though I have none) For I'm a Thinking Cap!" 🧙♂️🧙♀️🪄✨⚡🖤 BTW, I was sorted into Gryffindor and my brother was sorted into Slytherin in the Pottermore (now called Wizarding World) official website. The website was created by the Sony company and the author of the Harry Potter books, JK Rowling. I had to take a fun and special personality test to find out what house I am in. Go go Gryffindor! ❤💛❤🦁🏰🪄👍

Here's the thing about Harry and his parents. His parents died at 21. They got people who were much too old to play the roles. Harry was 15 months old to the day when they were killed and everyone who knew his mother who meets him is like. Oh you've got your mother's eyes but they hire a boy with blue eyes and a girl with brown eyes. They were supposed to have emerald green eyes

Unfortunately when it comes to how Harry survived as a child so that way you don't get any spoilers I won't mention exactly how it works until you get to the 4th movie, because they don't quite fully clarify it in the movie like they do in the book

I just wanna say there's nothing evil about the Slytherin house. It only seems bad because of the small amount of characters they showed (Draco, Crabbe, Goyle) and the people who ended up evil who happened to be in slytherin. Other houses have pretty mean people too. I"M NOT TRYING TO BRING DOWN OTHER HOUSES. But Slytherin isn't filled with only evil witches/wizards. They're ambitious, shrewd, cunning, strong leaders, and achievement-oriented people. I love all houses but I don't think Dumbledore really had to make Slytherin excited about winning the house cup, then change the flag to Gryffindor for the last minute points. I thought it was a bit mean to the younger slytherins.😭 Love all the houses❤ (I'm a Ravenclaw. Who else is?)

Those tiny little islands are more common in the Uk. There are often lighthouses on them that you could technically live in And to add tragedy, James and Lily in the books were 21 when they died. Which also means aunt petunia should really be somewhere in her 30s And for me, the best child actor was Haley Joel in Sixth Sense, how a child could convey that was incredible
