Slipstream was essentially Kurtz's way of declaring to George Lucas "I'll make my own sci-fi epic, then you'll regret firing me!" Slipstream bankrupted Kurtz, Steve Lisberger never directed again, and was totally disowned by it's original writer Charles Edward Pogue (Who co-wrote Cronenberg's The Fly and later Dragonheart) who's original idea was a post-ww3 version of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (with a boy befriending an android instead of a slave) but Kurtz wanted to make a gritty and violent adult film. Pogue hated it so much he successfully got his name taken off of the movie. Apparently most of the budget was spent on getting the cast/aircraft/sets and on-location shooting, that they had to tone the film down to PG-13 in hopes of getting more money, so that's why the movie's so weird and incoherent. This was another humiliating blow to Kurtz, who's previous job as a producer was on Return to Oz, where he apparently did such a poor job during preproduction that Disney fired him before filming started and he was given an executive producer credit because his replacement felt bad for him, and to insult to injury George Lucas had to come in and save Return to Oz because of how troubled it's production was even during filming.

It is a 'Space Opera' which is a legitimate sub-genre of 'Science-Fiction'. So, yeah, it pretty much IS science-fiction. (me uttering this in a fatigued fashion) And please refrain from making yourself appear doltish by trying to be a smart-XXs who counters with, (1) "And where is the 'science' in it?" or (2) "It is not sci-fi, but rather science-fantasy". This world is full of misnomers, because 'things' simply have to be called something other than.... "things", which then sometimes leads to instances where certain names do not entirely do their subjects justice. But it is OK.... well, as long as one is not an annoying obsessive pedant. The 'New Wave' sci-fi literature from the 1960s and '70s often gave a little damn about 'science'; no, that movement was largely focused on something else. Another example; the universe of Mad Max is usually classified as 'a post-apocalyptic sci-fi' and, as we all know, that franchise's focus on your beloved 'science' equals to like friggin' zero. And yeah, speaking of misnomers, the name of the tentative sub-genre 'science-fantasy' STILL contains the word 'science' after all. Despite the fact of what its works are commonly about (as in often lacking your beloved 'science'). So there is a life lesson behind this: "It does not really matter" + "Just LET GO!"

Ironically, Wing Commander Prophecy was the only game of this franchise I played on a regular basis and it was pretty damn good. The Cut Scenes were very well done (also filmed on expensive Sets) and the Flying Mechanics and graphics were a big improvement over WCIV. And while Blair wasn’t the main character anymore (he was more of a mentor figure in this one), Hamill tuned in a great performance. But I agree, all WC-games deserve an extensive remaster. Keep the live Action Cutscenes, enhance the rest, and I’m all in. (Little shoutout to the 1999-movie, by the way. It’s not great, but I find it to be a perfectly fine little flick)

Here's the problem a lot of fans that grew up with the Original Trilogy had with the Dit$ney sequels. Timothy Zahn wrote the novel *Heir to the Empire* in the 1990s set about five years after the events of ROTJ. It had the exciting pacing of the originals, was brilliant and heroic and portrayed Princess Leia becoming a Jedi and Head of State of a New Republic, Han and Chewie becoming her bodyguards and liasons to the smugglers, and Luke becomes Grand Master to a new Jedi Order. They discover a new enemy in Grand Admiral Thrawn (later become a cartoon character) a military genius that made Palpy and Vader look like religious fools. Two more brilliant novels and a long list of New Republic novels (now dismissed as Extended Universe) followed concerning Han and Leia's three Jedi children, unique characters from various stories in this galaxy/book series, and terrifying invading aliens from another galaxy. As far as I am concerned, heroic Grand Master Luke is Mark Hamill's best role he never gets to play. Much better than Cowardly Luke hidden on Monster Titty Island (🤢).

He also did the voice of Megatronus in the Transformers Machinima series, Power of the Primes.

Christopher Blair (callsign: Maverick) from the Wing Commander series of games especially the fourth entry is one of Mark Hamill's most memorable sci-fi characters acting alongside Malcolm McDowell, John Spencer Tom Wilson, John Rhys Davies, a very young Marc Dacascos, Walton Goggins and even Johnny Rico himself, Casper Van Dien. Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom was also the most expensive game at the time especially featuring long branching FMV cutscenes with real actors and state of the art 3D vfx way before Babylon 5 was made. It may not be a real movie, but it's close enough to be one. Of course... we don't talk about that awful movie adaptation starring Freddie Prince Jr.

I actually saw Slipstream at the cinema back in the day. I have never had the urge to watch it again. The only thing I remember was the the terrible effects when they fly under the waterfall and the funky-shaped balloons in the credits. That's it.

Commando girl=Rae Dawn Chong, daughter of Tommy Chong. I feel like a few Cheech and Chong jokes would have fit in well with the theme of these awful movies.

Wanna shout out Wing Commander 3, a game made for the 3DO. Mark Hamill is present there in the full motion video sequences.

I've had Sliptream on VHS and now own it on DVD. Unfortunately a widescreen presentation seems impossible to come by.

I thought I was just stupid when I couldn't play wing commander 3 in the 90s at an acquaintance's house (no normal home would have that game to play in Brazil's 90s lol) and seeing you shit on the controls made me feel validated. Thanks.

He also wrote a comic barely anyone has heard about called Black Pearl I believe it was? Saw it advertised in the back of the X-files Manga years ago (and yes X-Files had a manga lol).

The concepts behind Slipstream actually sound pretty interesting. Too bad it didn't translate into an enjoyable movie. I've seen Time Runner. At the beginning of the film I was excited and thought it would be a fun sci-fi adventure. But it turned out to be boring.
