I teach this novel and show this film. It's often misunderstood. It isn't about a woman telling a man what's wrong with him and he changes. It's about two imperfect people who must acknowledge their faults and then change in order for them to be happy. Darcy is socially awkward which is misunderstood for pride. Elizabeth struggles with her incorrect first impressions of people, an issue that causes struggles to arise. It's a complex novel, going even deeper than romance. It's a phenomenal novel and film.

You did miss some key moments that only hinted at the scandals this family were in. Miss. Bingley (the red haired lady) is Mr. Bingleys sister. She's hoping to climb the social ladder by both marrying well, and have her brother marry well. She hoped to marry Mr. Darcy herself, with her brother marrying Miss Darcy. Mr. Wickham tried to seduce Miss Darcy for her 30.000 pounds, when she was 16 (and he's betrwwn 26-28). She agreed to an elopment, and if it had been made known, her name would have been ruined. Fortunatly, she told her brother, and Mr Darcy told Mr Wickham to get lost. Lydia running away with Mr Wickham is a huge scandal. Remember, this is the time where a womans virginity is highly important. Living together before marrying will mean that no-one else if good name and fortune will marry her. It basically tells the world she has no morals. And since her family didn't teach her, it means that the rest of them lacks morals as well. Wickham never intended to marry Lydia, as she was too poor, but Mr Darcy paid him of, so he did. If he hadn't Lydia would have been on her own, with no skill other than what Mr Wickham had tought her (to say it politely). The tragic in this, is that she was 16, but according to their culture, she was grown up. And is now doomed in a marriage with a rotten man. Marriage for women were so important. Women couldn't make much money them selves, and they are also part of the upper class, where they all live of the interests of investments and rental income. They don't sell anything or do any physical labour. Women in this class weren't tought any skill than being a upper class women and therefore needed to marry someone with enough money to remain in the same class. If they didn't they had to hope a male relative would take care of them after their father died. This explains Mrs Bennet is so desperat to have her daughters marry.

While no one is a laborer here, there are some additional class distinctions that cause problems in the story. The Bennets are middle class, while Darcy is both the son and nephew of noblewomen (his deceased mother and Lady de Bourgh). He is upper class, she is not. Lady de Bourgh does not approve of her nephew's match with Elizabeth because he would be marrying below his station.

I agree that he is shy but I did read books, he is also proud, well aware of his position in society and unlike others he doesn’t try to pretend class difference are not important in that world. ‼️ important context ‼️ Wickham is a grifter and a gambling addict and all around not nice man. What happened here is that he gambled away his fortune and then tried to force Darcy to essentially pay for his lifestyle by taking advantage of and seducing Darcy’s 14-year-old baby sister (the little blonde girl named Georgina). It didn’t work, bc of Darcy’s money, power and influence. Unfortunately, he succeeded with the Lydia. She’s only about 16 or 15 and he convinced her to run away with him, compromised her virtue, making her and her family social pariahs unless they consent to pay him to marry her. Darcy agreed to do it instead, but unfortunately that means Lydia will stuck with him for the rest of their lives. Also! Everyone is afraid of the grey haired woman bc she’s a duchess, meaning she belongs to the royal peerage. Nobody else in this movies does - they’re all just upper and lower middle class ladies and gentlemen. So, basically, she outranks them and they must show her respect.

@@bethanychatman9531 And that's the exact reason they stuck the kiss on the end for the US version. Apparently UK test audiences found it unnecessary and tonally weird so it got cut for the original theatrical release...except in the US (and other places that normally get the US version of movies). Darcy explains in the letter he leaves for Elizabeth after she rejects him, that Mr. Wickham, after gambling away his own inheritence from Mr. Darcy's father, comes back and tries to seduce Georgiana(Mr. Darcy's little sister) to run away and elope with him, I think she's only like 15 at the time or something like that, he just wants her money. That's why Darcy hates him and why Lizzie hates him afterwards. It's not as clear in the movie but the situation could have absolutely ruined Lydia's entire life if Mr. Wickham decided not to marry her, which he wouldn't have if Mr. Darcy hadn't given him a buttload of money. Back then sex before marriage for a woman would leave her reputation completely destroyed and no one would have married her, meaning she would have lived the rest of her life with no income, and would have died poor and alone.

Your enthusiasm for the story was super fun. Austen is my favorite author so I have a lot of Opinions (TM) about adaptations hahahaha. There are sooo very many, especially for P&P. Some of them you can't really get anymore bc the BBC was super bad about throwing out old stuff to make room for new stuff before digital and there's some like... made for TV ones that are not good. But here are my hot takes on the most popular: I think my favorite thing about 2005 is that the actresses playing the Bennet sisters are all actually really close in age to the girls in the book so the energy really has the feeling of these mid teens to early twenties sisters. It feels authentic. And I like some of the romantic gestures and moments they add. I struggle when adaptations have people act out of character, one example is Lady Catherine would never, ever visit someone in the middle of the night - she would come during calling hours - the afternoon, and for the Bennets probably early afternoon as later = a closer relationship. It bothers me, but I can work past that. The thing that I have a really hard time forgiving is when they just absolutely hack and slash Austen's dialogue. She doesn't write a ton of dialogue and what she does put in is so good and they just thrashed it to bits. It hurts me. The 1995 adap is so much better for me. They let the characters breathe a bit more. They let Austen's words shine more. It's quieter and a little less visually flashy, but def has it's upsides. It is also a miniseries that is 5 hours long. So it's a time investment, altho not actually the longest of adaptations haha, but honestly worth it. At the end you were surprised to realize it took place over a whole year, but with the added space you get to understand that passage of time a little more clearly. Also you do get to see weddings happen. So that's a plus. The 1940 adaptation is utter nonsense, but it is fun nonsense. The costumes make NO sense for the era and the actors are way too old to be playing 20-somethings. Among other just absolutely goofy things they do... but it's so wrong it's worth laughing at? Or with? There's a thing in Austen's books where sometimes she's like ah there going to a town and it's fictional so she doesn't even make up a name, it's just written as _____shire in the book. And at one point one of the characters is like "Let's go to Blankshire!" or something like that and I DIE. Laughing. Every. Time. Honorable Mentions... All worth it. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016). No joke. I honestly love this movie. A dude actually released it as a book first, like took JA full novel and went thru and just tweaked and threaded a zombie apocalypse into it, but still maintains the integrity of the JA story. It's campy and hilarious. Bride & Prejudice (2004) is a Bollywood-style adaptation, taking place mainly in present-day India, and is truly delightful. 10/10, no notes. The Lizzie Bennet Diaries (2012-2013) is a webseries, set in modern day, free online. They released it in real time over the course of a year in the style of a vlogger. Lizzie is a college student and starts the vlog as part of her thesis. They actually won an Emmy for the show bc of how innovative it was in interactive media. They made social media accounts for each character that would have made sense for them at that time. All of them had twitter, but some (depending on the character) also had tumblr, linkedin, lookbook, a music one i don't remember, websites for companies. They would actually have them posting for weeks/months before they were ever introduced on the show so it was possible to find them early or go back and read the history of what they've been doing. And they had people managing them so the characters would respond if it made sense for them to. Lizzie also did Q&A videos, taking questions from the comments of earlier videos. It was wild bc those were real people asking questions for fictional characters to answer. And there were other channels of characters making videos (Lydia, Mr Collins, Charlotte's sister Maria). It is technically the longest adaptation, bc it does take place over a whole year, but each video individually is only a few minutes - mostly under 5 I think, tho a few of the later ones get up around 10 min.

Who can dispute that Matthew Macfadyen and Kiera Knightly played the best roles as Darcy and Elizabeth ever! The script revealed a smart and witty Elizabeth, written in natural conversation so you found her instantly believable. Darcy was shy and quiet, not overly sociable, only participating in the most obligatory social events as his status and business required of him. I love this version because it is so cinematically beautiful and unfussy, portraying all of the points of the story, the jist of Jane Austen's characters and the Regency Period without being distracted by unnecessary scenes or set designs. The costuming is soft, elegant, romantic without over the top antebellum skirts and pleated collars and hats. The scene locations are some of the most beautiful rural areas of England and the choice of Chatsworth House for the fictional Pemberley was stunning. Highclere Castle as the home of Lady de Bourgh and the casting of Judi Dench made the movie that much more riveting.

So...Mr Darcy is an introvert and that makes him socially awkward, plus all the things he went through with his family and mr Whickam made him more on guard with other people. You can see it since the begining of the movie, he is quiet, very introspective, I also think that being in big crowds makes him more anxious and despite him saying that Jane is the "most handsome girl in the room", ever since he entered the ball in the begining he couldn't take his eyes off of Elizabeth, now...in my opinion he fell in love at first sight and we can see it by paying atention at the way he steals glances at her everytime he can, the imediate and awkward stand up greeting/aknowledge when she comes to the bingley's house, the lovesick look he has throughout the entire film, and many more. But him being introvert and shy made it difficult for him to express his feelings by talking, but if you see his actions and the way he listens to her opinions and takes them to improve himself is so awesome and incredible, it shows such a great sense of maturity. If you pay attention to their dialogues, every time elizabeth tells him what she likes or dislikes in a man, the next time they encounter he tries so hard to be the man she likes. For example that time when she tells him that the first thing that'll encourage afection is dancing and then in the next ball he dances with her. She also tells him in another occasion to practice talking to other people and in the next scene you can see him doing exactly that by saying "This is a charming house" and asking her "don't you love weather?" He also tried to propose to her the first time he visited her and there was no one in the house, but then anxiety hits him and he runs!!! He is such a cute person. Every single time this man TRIES SO HARD even though he is a introvert/socially awkward person through and through, which makes im stumble with words and saying things he didn't mean, because he couldn't express the right words!

You being confused and not connecting why Lizze hates Wickham is so fanny and relatable, getting lost at a plot and twists 😂

Oh my goodness gracious, I absolutely loved watching you react to this movie! I saw it in theaters and on dvd many times, and your insights and commentary reflected a lot of my own thoughts on the first watch (so many names and faces to remember, it gets confusing!). You are a delight and a sweetheart. Thank you for posting this! 🥰

This is delightful! Such a good reaction. Also, do you pause often? Looks like you do and that's great! I was scared you were gonna miss Darcy's hand ~moment when reacting to him helping her but you didn't - cause I assume you paused! Great reacting!

Delightful reaction video. Thanks. I’d recommend Sense and Sensibility 1995. Also based on a Jane Austen novel. If you like this you will also enjoy S&S. I’d love to see your reaction, but I’d also recommend even if you just watched it on a chilly day and didn’t share your reaction. 🌺🌸🌺

I watched some reactions to this film and of all the ones I watched, no one understood that the blonde girl was Georgina, his sister. But how can you not understand?😂😂😂😂 she is very young, she plays the piano very well and if you notice in the first scene where we see her (where she hugs Darcy) she plays the same melody that Elisabeth tried to play at Lady Catherine's house. I think it's something Darcy wanted. With all the melodies that exist I don't think it's a coincidence

The fact that president snow (mr.Bennett) and Johanna (Lydia) were father and daughter in this…CRAZY😂 And fun fact: milk and raw egg was used to “cure” hangovers

Juat to clear it up: the redheaded lady who gave villain vibes was Bingley's sister Caroline, different from Darcy's sister Georgiana (blonde). Charlotte, who married Mr. Collins, was Lizzie's bff, not a sister.

This is the best movie review I’ve seen in a long time. I enjoyed the vibes so much I stopped half way through and went and got my 8yr old and started it over and we watched together. Being a kid, she also has had no exposure to Jane Austen in general, but you made it so accessible and fun. We gossiped and giggled and gushed and had a lovely girls night. Thank you 🫶 it is a memory I will cherish for a long time.

This is why Jane Austen is the OG for western romance. So many writers try to replicate Lizzie and Darcy's enemies to lovers, and miss the target by missing how they were never truly enemies. They just were lousy at communicating (partially hindered by society rules), but were very similar. I loved your reaction! I'd recommend the 1995 Sense and Sensibilty too!

Okay, this was so fun to watch because you’ve never read the book & kept forgetting who everybody was and I was like interacting with you the whole time 😂 Also, Darcy looks stone cold from the beginning because this is Lizzie’s POV, and that’s her first impression of him. He softens over time as she gets to know who he truly is!

This was a really fun, energetic reaction, and it was great as your first reaction! I do wish you hadn't missed so many details that affected how you saw the characters. Wickham is a terrible person -- he tried to get everything he could from Darcy's father, gambled away everything left to him, then tried to seduce Darcy's FIFTEEN year-old sweet little sister, then dumped her when Darcy wouldn't let him marry her. He then seduced 16 year-old Lydia (running off without marrying her) and only married her after Darcy paid thousands to hush up the scandal and make him do the right thing. Meanwhile, the redheaded sister is Mr. Bingley's sister, not Darcy's. Lady Catherine is Mr. Collins's main patron while he acts as reverend of the parish, so he is terrified of her and that's why he was so nervous about having all of them meet her. And why she acted like she could control who Lizzie married, etc. Looking forward to your other reactions -- I agree that the ending is so gentle and sweet!

I love this story so much and it's so fun to watch someone's first reaction to it! I highly recommend watching the BBC 1995 version as well! It's more accurate to the plot so it gives some more context, whereas this one is more romantic and dramatic I feel (both still really amazing!)

Since you enjoyed Pride & Prejudice, I heartily recommend The Lizzie Bennet Diaries. It's a modern telling in the shape of vlogs told by Lizzie with the appearances of Charlotte, Jane, Lydia and more. And best thing, it's all available on youtube. It still gets me all giddy and giggly as a fan of the story

The way I can't even count how many times I've seen this film :DD I always love seeing someone watching it for a first time. But I always get confused with the scene at the end since it isn't in the version I have, that one ends right after the scene with Mr Bennet. I would love to see you react to second season of Bridgerton though :D Only for the fact that there's so many references to this film.
