When you first mentioned the "no overcoats" sign I assumed the reason was because the judge was afraid of someone concealing a firearm beneath it. From hearing your story it sounds like the judge was simply offended by coats for some reason. My question is why? I'm familiar with the "no hats" rule, and even that seems arbitrary, unnecessary and controlling. I have never heard of a coat being disrespectful. What if you're cold? Is it honestly just a control thing? What's the deal?

tl;dr; Judges and the like insist on "proper" dress because it works. The rules about what any given society considers respectful and disrespectful are basically arbitrary. The only reason they mean anything is because society says they do. How you dress to show respect is one of the more common forms of that. -- The other half is that there is a long (hundreds, even thousands, of years) history of showing those tokens of respect to people who are in positions of authority. I'm no sociologist, but I expect the reason those traditions have being around so long is that things work better for everyone (i.e. people tend to live longer and have more kids survive) when we respecting those in authority (particularly when they have earned that respect) and people tend to respect or disrespectful the same in different ways. That is if you show tokens of respect in how you dress around someone, you will be more inclined to show respect in your manner of address to them and then also in the deference you give to their authority.

Steve is NOT lying about injuries to your hand, about your hand swelling up. I was doing work for a local festival, when I was younger, setting up tents. We had to place these stakes in the ground for the tents themselves. I couldn't get any help and the site supervisor told me to just grab the sledgehammer with one hand (medium sized, mind you) and grab the tent stake with the other, "easy as pipe" they told me. Well, it might be with two people but I ended up striking the backside of my left hand when I swung and it felt like I shattered the bones in my left hand. The supervisor said it was nothing to worry about. But, the supervisors went into panic mode when I approached them 30 minutes and four knuckles on my left hand were swollen up like baseballs (actual baseballs, and it hurt like hell) and they rushed me to the hospital. The temp agency, who sent me there on a weekend employment assignment ended up paying workman's compensation for three months for not just the injury but that the job site had provided very little supervision. But, I have to tell you, it's not an experience I would recommend anyone go through. I decided to tell this story here because Steve is not lying about your hand swelling up from a hand injury.

A minor irony was that I was scheduled to make a dinner presentation to a group of mortgage bankers on the following Monday evening titled "Mortgage Backed Securities -- When Things Go Bump in the Night." I had to cancel my presentation with the excuse that "I went bump on a Sunday afternoon." At least I didn't have to go to court looking like that though I did schlep myself to the office on the following Tuesday only to be ordered to go home by the managing partner. "You look bad for business. People will think we've become a P.I. firm." By the way, the fall did not stop me from biking either. The following autumn I rode my trusty Masi (same type of bike used in the movie "Breaking Away") on another club-sponsored ride through much of Europe from the Netherlands to Austria.

Ouch, glad I rolled when I hit. I was Mt. Biking a downhill trail (I'd tried the day before) with a friend. There was a dirt jump before an 8' drop straight down. The day before I rode over the jump caught some air but was slow enough that the rear tire caught the edge of the drop-off and I rolled straight down. That day I yelled, watch this! I got going faster than the day before and caught serious air. I landed at the bottom of the drop-off. My friend, rolled around the dirt jump, and came to check on my status. He immediately burst into laughter. I said what's so dam funny? "Your face, it's 1/2 black, like me!" What I failed to realize is, while trying not to loose the bike midair, I'd inadvertently locked up the brakes while holding onto the handgrips & levers! At touchdown W/ wheels locked the bike stopped dead. I however kept moving- face first into the dirt! While It's tried to keep my face from hitting hard with my hand, I broke it. Sure enough the X-ray showed a broken wrist.

For future reference, the fire department has this cool little cutter thing that works much like a can opener. Part of it slides under the ring and they hold the handles together and turn a little wing key that spins a little diamond edge cutting wheel. A friend of mine recently had her ring cut off with one and they actually said they needed the practice. Several of them had never even seen the thing. They all got to see how it worked that day. Just in case someone waits too long for whatever reason its nice to know its not the end for your finger. Your friend was quick though and saved you having to get your ring cut.

Pontiac Lake is quite the challenging course. I have ridden it a few times. Problem with it is if you get hurt/disabled on the course you are stuck there for a long time. I worked ambulance that covered the area. Last call I had on the bike trail took us 30 min to reach the person from the time we got the call. Its very inaccessible to pretty much anything but walking onto the track. The local fire department had to cut a chain or two to get access to access roads so we could get our ambulance closer. Getting a person off requires pretty much carrying them out in a basket.

So I had to appear on a business matter regarding a former employee. My counsel was like you, an avid outdoorsman. The week before, while playing tennis, he fell and broke his clavicle, radius and chipped his elbow. We had one extension already, so we had to appear period. No Mr. nice guy judge in labor appellate court. He showed up with his arm and, shoulder in a hard cast, there was a brace on his hip so he couldn't even wear a dress shirt, let alone a jacket. Barry is wearing some kind of hospital gown with his suit pants, no tie or coat. We get called up. The Judge look up at him, stops what he was writing and tells Barry that a coat and tie are required in his court. Barry starts to say something like, you might notice I'm half crippled. But before he can start, the Judge says, you're a smart man, only one arm is excused from my rules, I'll call you back in twenty minutes and waves us away. I rushed down to Barry's car, get his stuff. Met him in the restroom where the bailiff gave us a roll of evidence tape. I got him presentable on the good side and rolled everything up behind his back. So from the front he has half a shirt, tie and coat on with the gown thingy in the other side. Really looked bad, but, when we were called the judge smiled, asked how he hurt himself, told him to take it easy and proceeds with the case which we won. (saved me a boatload) and as were leaving, the Judge calls Barry up to the bench and said, "Was that so hard to think of? If I bend rules for you, I have to bend them for everyone and in this court, the rules are the rules. Never forgot that It didn't take that much effort on Barry's behalf to try and meet the Judge halfway.

lovemusicbandchorus They’re actually much safer. They keep the feet from coming off the pedals when you don’t want them too. But after just one or two minor falls you get really used to snapping out of them with a sideways motion of the feet. I used to be able to pop out mid air upside down. It just becomes second nature. I would feel very unsafe without them plus they really help with delivering power to the drivetrain and smoother pedaling. Before they came out with clipless pedals, I used to ride with road cleats and double leather straps; i.e., no way to get out of the pedals without reaching down to bat the straps. Completely locked in. Once I went over the bars off the side of a trail and did an almost complete flip still locked into my pedals. Luckily the willows caught me and the bike. I was really glad when they came out with clipless pedals!

It was a staggered start with people going every 30 seconds and on the way down, there were piles of steaming bear crap. Somehow no one ran into any of the actual bears, but we knew they were there! And there were a lot of them!

Steve, I did something similar although less serious after a storm as a kid. Riding around looking at the damage and one not so large branch on the road later and the bike has stopped and I have gone over the handle bars and pretty much did a partial flip as I am pretty sure I landed on my back. I walked away with no serious injuries but I do pay attention to all branches on roads now.

Ok, if it ever happens again, here is what you do (or if it happens to a friend): Take an old suit you don't wear; slice the inside seam open on the underneath side of the arm; insert a zipper; unzip; insert your arm; zip up (or buttons, or hooks, etc.). I had a hip replacement and couldn't get regular pants on for 6 months (long story, many twists and turns...). Anyway, I had to do something similar to that with a pair of slacks on the inside seam and it worked like a charm and when zipped, you couldn't tell.

I can relate to the bike accident! 10 years on a motorcycle and no trouble. Just one summer on a mountain bike and I crack my shoulder blade then 2 months later broke my forearm in a bike accident the eve of Thanksgiving. I didn't realize it was broke until a stranger handed me my bike and I grabbed the handlebar with my right hand. Then I noticed a pivot point in the center of my forearm. Like you I was driving a Wrangler with a stick shift. Fortunately I rode from the house. But it would be a week later before a doctor got around to fixing it due to the holiday. The larger of the two bones broke clean apart and overlapped each other.

Quite a story, and I can sympathize with your hand injury. Actually, I was involved in a head on collision with another motorcycle at a closure rate of roughly eighty MPH, broke the second to fifth Metacarpals in my left hand ... the fifth was crushed into (if I remember correctly) 35 identifiable pieces. The orthopedic surgeon came into the ER after looking at the X-rays, carefully lifted my hand so I could see it, took the pinky in his hand covering it to the wrist, and said "Can you live without this?" After careful consideration I replied "Yeah, but I'll have to modify all my gloves. Save it if you can." LSS, he did save it, but it's a bit truncated. There were other significant injuries, particularly a compound fracture of the Humerus and radial nerve torn, but not severed. He also asked if I was going to give up motorcycles, to which I replied: "Hell no! Planning my next bike." He shook his head and had me wheeled into the OR. Actually, I got off lightly. The other rider died of several major traumas due to no protective gear at all. My gear saved me from the same fate: my helmet had a three square inch piece gouged out of the outer fiberglass shell, and the inner PS liner was crushed from one and a half inches thick to less than a half inch. The only effect from that was a slight headache. From then to now I have put over 600,000 miles on a variety of motorcycles without any injuries.

Man, can I sympathize with that story! I've ridden (road bike, not mountain) for about 50 years, not counting childhood, in which time I've had two serious accidents, 10 months apart, in Aug. 2010 and June 2011. Both times I lost consciousness. Both times, I was wearing a helmet, which is a practice I swear by. (In your situation, it doesn't sound like it would have been much if any help, though.) Luckily, I didn't have to show up for work the next day - I was already retired. Fred

I got knocked under a low boy trailer, was small enough (110 pounds) to have the ramp structures let the tire get to me. Had my left arm under me & got ground along the asphalt for 15 feet. Fractured all but 2 ribs on my left chest & had multiple compound open fractures of my left hand. First thing I said was "don't lift me & get my ring off". Would have been way better to have done it younger & while doing something fun!

I used to mountain bike in college but honestly was not coordinated enough to do much with fancy stunts lol! The bikes back then, while still pretty expensive, didn't have disc brakes and were just starting to have suspension. Some of the craziest of us would go down the ski slopes in the summer, I always wanted to do that but nobody would dare accompany me - I'd have rented one of their bikes with the suspension. We have some really great trails in Acadia National Park and around the University of Maine. My sister would play demolition derby with my rear tire and that would most often wreck me - skinned knees would be the worst of it.

Why not use the bike as a tool? This tool can save you money. Also- I don't have to call on friends for rides.... I toss the bike in the hatchback- drive to mechanic of the inspection/oil change/etc... I ride my bike home. When the car is ready, I use my bike to ride to the garage, flip it in the car, and drive home. I never have to pester friends. We dont have uber here... DENY the oil company money!!!

Or they go out on the trails hiking and backpacking where falls are far less frequent *and* usually not anywhere near as severe. Plus, you didn't damage a bike in the process which can cost you $$$ to fix, and you may have to drag or carry that bike back with you after you retrieve it (all while possibly injured). I'm not against those who want to get out on bikes and tear it up, but there are alternatives to sitting in a chair that have been available to us for tens of thousands of years before they even existed.

I understand the funny story concept. It’s not funny at the time, but gives you an interesting story to tell from time to time. Some years ago I was with a friend dirt biking down near Lesterville, Missouri. It was right at dusk, I was following him through the woods in unfamiliar terrain, riding like crazy through a dry creek bed. I zigged when I should’ve zagged and flipped the bike at speed. Peeled all the hide of my right arm from my wrist to my elbow, bruised some ribs, tore up my clothing and got somewhat cut up on the rocks. We got the bike running again and made our way back to the campsite. Our wives were freaked out when they saw me covered with blood with ripped up clothing. It wasn’t fun at the time, but as you said....

Steve, is that why you have a dimple on your left cheek but not on the right cheek? Regarding gloves I recently found out they're great even on hot days. At the very least it keeps the wind from biting. Got the classic Mechanix for most days, and Sealskinz with those grip pads for rainy days. I'm willing to argue they make handling more convenient than going bare. Also I don't have experience mountain biking, but isn't your accident the exact kind of accidents the full-face downhill helmets were invented for?

Reminds me of being a kid of about 14 with a Honda motorcycle . I was negotiating some big round boulders at about one half mile per hour and unexpectedly got radically flipped down into the rocks by a twist in the front wheel. My head crashed into one of the boulders and I got up and was a bit dazed and wondered what happened. I then took off the helmet that my parents REQUIRED me to wear and there was a BIG chunk bashed out of the front part of the dome. I deeply realized that would have been my skull without the helmet and I made a silent , life long, vow to always wear a helmet no matter how 'safe' I thought the trip was going to be.

When I worked at a company in Kokomo, Indiana, a guy came in one morning who looked like he met up with a biker gang the night before. He wouldn't tell anybody what happened.
