Legrand is such a genius. his songs are both accessible yet mysterious. deceptively simple and yet so hauntingly beautiful. i cannot even see where his mastery of technique begins because his works are so flawlessly made.
@tom4v52

They appear to be simple you are right, but if you read the score, they are peppered with subtle and complex harmonies, sometimes with dissonances. The genius is to make it look so obvious and pure despite the delicate intellectual architecture behind it.

So sad when a musical talent such as Michel Legrand leaves this world. He will be remembered for his beautiful movie scores and romantic songs. I grew up listening to his music because my parents always listened to his work. Rest in peace Monsieur Legrand, je vous aime.

No,have not seen the movie.I must find it.I know from certain singers,that Michel was not easy to work with.Thats only Because THEY the composers know How their music must sound.Thats the way they want it. Charles Aznavour is the same. They write the music and the lyrics,they now how it must sound.Please listen to song from Aznavour: Toi et Moi. Full orchestra and Beautiful piano...Enjoy your music as I do.Music is the best medicine.Great talking to you.😀

The emotion was mutual. He was parting for the army, left her a souvenir. She married a well-off diamond merchant, who understood the situation. Years later, they met by chance; He saw his son and her daughter through the window. She drove away. He discussed the meeting with his wife. End of film. If anything, reality compelled HER to leave HIM.

This song has such a beautiful but tragic memory for me...I had a boyfriend who was a couple of years older than me he had applied for the air force and never knew he got a letter of acceptance that day...and my family loved and adored him..I was only 16...one Saturday the phone rang and his mom called me to say he had died..he drowned my mom and aunt were in the kitchen when I screamed and told them what happened..I was so devastated..my mom already had Connie Francis playing on our stereo in the living room and this song was playing..I’ll never forget that and him rip Joe🙏🏻 So this song will forever remind me of him and that day...thank you for posting this rendition of that beautiful song I never heard it before

You're making a good point, whether for the BBC or not. The truth is, the original French lyrics of this song - truly heart-breaking - are fully integrated into the plot line of the musical (Les Parapluies de Cherbourg), and might not make so much sense as an isolated song. There is also less hopeful anticipation in them, and more of a melancholic acceptance of fate - "comment pourrai-je vivre sans toi", or "how will I be able to live without you ?").

Re language: She had recorded this in French with Michel Legrand's orchestra in 1964. (She also did versions in Spanish and Japanese at the same time.) Clearly they performed it in English here for the British public. Also, by then, Legrand had been living in the U.S. for some time and worked a great deal in English.

You can look up her 1964 recording of it in French. There's a reason they did it in English - for the British television audience. Mouskouri never recorded it in English, but the English version was already well known by the time they did this show.
