They're actually not cameras, just IR light emitters, basically a low power flashlight for IR light. The IR sensors are actually on the Wiimote. The sensor bar is just to get a location fix on where the TV is. Candles actually give off IR light, so you could have two candles, and it would work as a sensor bar. The sensor bar itself is actually super low tech, all the tech is in the Wiimote
@ThePaperKhan

Yup, just two little lights. The remote has an IR camera, and it (probably) just maps where it sees the lights with X and Y coords and sends it to the console to math out where the TV would be in relation to that. Deceptively simple, and fricken genius :D

"...You can see the infrared cameras looking back at you." Likely already stated, The infrared "camera" is the wiimote not the "sensor bar" It is literally two infrared leds spaced a specific distance apart to give the infrared receiver in the wiimote 2 points of light to tell the wiimote where it is in conjunction with the screen and how the player is holding it. The the Wii gets the information from the Wiimote over bluetooth. The funny part about all of this, It's something that is covered in the documentation that comes with the consoles. If you didn't buy the console new with the documents you'd never know unless you bothered looking up the details of the console online.

The sensor bar is just two IR LEDs in the gamepad, the wiimote does all the work. And if you select the Wii menu from the Wii U menu and press Plus on a wiimote, then you can just launch Wii mode on just the GamePad. None of this select both and then turn off the TV stuff, it also disables the other sensor bar so that you can just use the GamePad. Also if your Wii U is unmoded or not in a state of functioning in the modded environment, upon powering up your Wii U, when you see the Wii U logo press and hold the b button on any Wii remote, this will boot you straight into Wii mode, if you have multiple accounts on the Wii U it will ask you to select the account you want to play with and then boot you into Wii mode.

Also, if for whatever you don't have a sensor bar available (on the Wii U menu, when your trying to start up the vWii (virtual Wii) menu, it asks that you aim the remote to the physical (so not the gamepad one) sensor bar it assumes you have connected), you can start up the system in the vWii menu by holding down the "B" button when the Wii U logo appears, so tldr: Turn on system (recommend to do it directly on console and not power button on gamepad) -> wait for Wii U logo -> logo appears -> hold down "B" -> screen should say "going to Wii menu"
