Its condensation that spoils the veggies. If you wrap the lettuce in paper towel and then put it in a plastic bag it will last 30 days or more. The paper towel absorbs the condensation and the damp towel maintains the humidity around the veggie keeping it crisp. Works for all veggies. Cukes. Zucchini, green onions, broccoli, celery, etc.

This sort of thing works for a lot of fruits and vegetables. Very simply put, fruits and vegetables tend to be stored in a way that lets them breathe. This does make them taste better while they are fresh, but allows them to rot a lot faster. Doing things like wrapping them in foil can give them a better sort of seal that keeps them from rotting as fast, but can impact the taste compared to stuff that's left unwrapped. The effect on the taste is sometimes given as the "official" reason why they don't tend to package things like that, but the real reason is that the more thorough and tightly wrapped packaging would cost the company more money, ramping prices up even further, so it's a lot cheaper for them to let so much go to waste (then blame consumers for food waste when the topic comes up) than it is to wrap it better.
@MelanieFromCanada

Learned working in the produce section of a grocery store... skim cut the 'root' end of lettuce, celery etc. With celery and green onions, cut the other end off just a little as well. Place in a bag with a small amount of luke warm water hitting the roots and seal at the top. Put in the fridge standing up right away. Perks them right up and helps last longer.

I usually wrap leafy greens and herbs in paper towels as a desiccant and a paper bag (or double bag) for insulation. Works just as well. @jimmyniland9721

You can also stick the unused lettuce / cabbage / sweed / turnip e.t.c. In a plant pot of compost. If you keep the compost moist, it will just keep living and growing ( cut off any flower stalks! ). Keep your vegetables in cold water and they will last much longer. You can also use CO², or a vacuum sealer because it's the oxygen that causes them to "rust"
@Feverdream7777
4 ай бұрын
Not completely true. Vacuum sealing will not improve the situation in this case; there are many statements about vacuum sealing some veggies that actually worsen the situation. And I surmise the aluminum is catalyst that is releasing Ozone (O3) .. aluminum oxide is Al203 ... so in water, most likely we are seeing 03 released which is antimicrobial. (and is also used heavily industrial food sealing to prevent spoiling and retain freshness).

Interesting. I always bag my lettuce in a storage baggie, then push out as much air as I can, then seal it. I can get up to 2 months before looking bad. Key is to always store your veggies in the vegetable drawer too. One of the reasons I get so much time span is bc I'm single and don't open my refrigerator as often as a family would. What also works is if you cut the bottoff, just like a sliver, and you can soak that in water for about 30 minutes to an hour each day and it will stay fresh too. And that's a lot Cheaper and better for the environment then Aluminum foil Coffee mugs work really well for doing this.Just take it out of the fridge for about 30 minutes to an hour.Set it in a coffee cup full of water after freshening the bottom up and it should be good also keep it in your crisper drawer to well keep it crisp

I use lemon juice. I soak it in water with 2 tablespoons or so in the water and lettuce. Refrigerate over night, crisps up wilted leaves. Drain water then spin in a salad spinner get it as dry as possible. Line a Tupperware with paper towels top and bottom. Works great!

Putting things in water and in the fridge will crispy it up and help with the shelf life as well. At least it works when I use iceberg lettuce and chop it up before storing it.

I grew up with mom wrapping things in foil and by the time she thought of them again they were rotten. So I don’t wrap anything in foil. 😂😂😂. But I do often have to throw away unopened bags of spoiled salad. 😢

Tin foil is a conductor, which conducts/transfers the heat/cold. With it wrapped up this way, it’s still breathable while maintaining the cold as close to the plant cells as possible; as opposed to leaving it in the bag which traps gases that break down the cells even faster, and not trapping the cold or humidity.

Thank you so much for that information. I've watched that other lady periodically and somehow I missed that episode! I buy the same three pack of lettuce that you do and you're right, I don't use it fast enough and then I'm trying to cut out the bad stuff. Foil from now on!❤

The wilted lettuce you can cut the bottom off and regrow more. Plus you can put lettuce, egg shells grind up and put in your garden.

I'm inclined to believe that there aren't any greengrocers, bakers, butchers or fishmongers in the USA. Only big supermarkets with prepakaged produce. I'm in Spain and we still have small shops to buy small amounts so it's fresh.

Another tip: If you google how to set and use your vegetable drawer in your fridge, it will accomplish the same thing as wrapping it in foil. But without the foil. For 40 years, your refrigerator could do this the whole time.

Foil is the best, I don't even use plastic wrap anymore, buy the big double rolls at Costco and use foil on everything, you can reuse it a lot of times too so I'll get multiple uses out of one sheet.

i buy the costco pack and chop and wash them all up so they’re ready to serve and put it in a big air tight container with a paper towel on the bottom .. stays perfectly fresh until we’re done with it and such a huge improvement to buying pre-chopped lettuce!

I love her she's great lol. You can also place in container with water on bottom and put a produce bag over it on fridge. I do it with all leafy greens. They stay so fresh for my iguana. Even if flimsy they with spruce up and spread out. Cut the bottoms straight across put in a small container in windowsill and withing 72 hrs you will have at least 2" of new growth and some roots (aqua growing) if you want to throw in a planting pot can just put in a place where it only gets some sun.. then few days later full sun 😉

Aluminum is antibiotic but if I don't use it right away I throw it in the dehydrator and make powdered vegetables that can get a spoonful thrown into any dish to increase the flavor and nutrition.

Tip from A cook .. if you do this eat it quickly meaning day or two or when doing this do it very gentle because the more brutal your with your salad when handling it .. the faster it will spoil and paper towels between layers with drip of water between your layer of salade stocked will preserve it longer

My trick since I use it for chopped salads is to just chop up and wash/dry the lettuce in the salad spinner and store in tupperware with a piece of papertowel on the top and bottom. Itll be fresh to use for a week+

Yes, it might prevent food spoilage, but the downside is severe. If more people were aware of the negative impacts of using aluminum, especially when it's cooled to low temperatures.

You don't even have to fully seal it. I wrap mine like a bouquet and just kind of lay the excess loosely over the top. You want enough airflow to keep moisture and condensation build up off your veg enough it's nicely balanced
