I like using the flat base cartridges, thank you for posting the video. We need more percussion sharps videos on KZitem. The way I corrected my two rifles hang fire issues were to open up the flash channel ever so slightly. It’s trial by error with little room for mistakes. Little by little until discharge is shot for shot. Take too much and the hammer will be blown back every shot. Another thing that helps is if you use a powder that has no graphite glaze like pyrodex or triple seven. I personally use my homemade black powder which has performed excellent in every range experience.

The IAB sharps likes good quality, HOT musket caps. Part of the reason for this is how the path from nipple to breach face has a couple right angles and the screw on the left side of breach block sometimes protrudes into the path of cap flash

It has been my experience with the percussion Sharps that cap firing is absolutely insufficient to clear preservative oils within the breech block and that removing the block and spraying it down with acetone based cleaner well away from the firing line is a must. If you should fail to do this, do not be surprised to encounter ignition failures and hard buildup of fouling within the block that causes jams. A flush out of the fladh channels with spray followed by a smear of either SPG or to my preference, Gato Feo, on the surfaces significantly helps reliability and functionality.

Very cool gun but I’m glad my new one is 45-70. Those were excellent demonstrations of hang fire useful for showing new shooters. I’m sure you’ll get it figured out.

My IAB is great! Never misfires! Spray the action with a little WD40 and it works like a charm. The rifle will not fire reliably with substitute powders. Best with 2Fg powder. One issue though, my bore diameter is .556 inches, even though it is stamped .54 cal. So I have to shoot .562 round ball to hit anything. These are really great rifles once you know their issues

Can you explain how you loaded the round ball? Was it a paper patch round or loaded loose? Can this rifle be loaded like a muzzleloader from the front? Thanks. I am still learning.

The paper cartridges you are using are covering up the powder and keeping the cap fire from hitting the powder .

Put a wad of paper in the chamber to simulate a cartridge. Cap it and then look at the results. That might tell you something useful.

I skirmish with guys that shoot this rifle in competition and they all pour loose powder behind the bullet. Very accurate at 50 & 100yrds and reliable.

I got a Chiappa 1874 Sharps Sporting rifle in 45-70 last Christmas . I need a little advice . I was told I could just use modern smokeless ammo that you can buy at the store as long as it wasnt the +P ammo . I just would like to know is this true ?

I think Remington used to make 45-70 ammo that said safe in all guns, you can reload ammo at a safe pressure level also.
