I saw ELP during The Works tour of 1977 WITH the orchestra and during the 1991 reunion Black Moon tour. Keith Emerson was mesmerizing BOTH times. They were ALL talented musicians who STILL DON'T get their due. ELP should be in the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame. I miss them terribly.

Saw the '97 tour with EL&P opening for Tull - you could tell Emerson was struggling - but he tried to hide it as best he could and he still managed a strong performance overall. EL&P released a show from that year; "Live at Montreux" - and his struggle is evident at times - esp. on the track “Hoedown” - which requires very fast work on the Hammond organ and he’s not able to hit all the notes the way he had many years before. RIP Keith Emerson & Greg Lake - gone but never forgotten.

I still remember seeing Keith on the cover of Keyboard Magazine announcing he had repetitive stress injuries which I assumed was like carpal tunnel, and starting to worry about his mental health. I would have told no matter what happens to your playing abilities, you can always still compose music.

I believe many of us have or would have said the same. It's 7 yrs on, and I still wonder if anyone could have convinced him that composing music would be plenty for us even if we never saw him play again as respect for his situation.

@@swiftusmaximus5651 He broke his foot in a motorcycle crash and had to cancel a few concerts in 1987. I can find nothing about his hand being injured. In interviews he did refer to a painful neurological condition he got surgery for in 1994, which required him to take a year off from performing. Emerson himself referred to "focal dystonia" which is a type of RSI similar to writer's cramp, causing involuntary (and painful) muscle contractions. His girlfriend indicated that he'd actually had a muscle removed in 2013 to stop the painful contractions. Despite the pain and involuntary contractions, according to the Guardian's Jonathan Glancey, by 2002. at the age of 57, he had "regained full use of his hands and can play as fast as ever." As I said, your opinion obviously differs.

His level of self demand for excellence was so high that he couldn’t cope with the suffering and decline of sickness, age, and time. For many of us “mortals” acceptance would come more naturally. Unfortunately not for the genius of Keith Emerson.

Took my family to see them (both!) in '97 at the Reno Hilton (since renamed). Did not notice the shortened set as such since ELP's play was as remembered seeing them twice in '74. Sad. Sad that so much of his being was invested in performance instead of finding something new.

It's kind of surprising and odd that Anderson didn't mention his own vocal collapse. It's really the same thing, and being a vocalist was a much bigger part of his performance that being a flute or guitar player. To say "I am lucky, nothing like that has ever touched me, I can still play the flute" is almost 'neglect' in the neuro-psychiatriac sense. I guess it either doesn't bug him that much, or he's so sensitive about it that he just rules it out of existence.

Excellent point..I for one would rather hear him sing as he did in 70-77 and trade off a bit of flute dexterity as the flute, charming as it was/is, was just an incidental instrument in Tull's music, the songs were not based around the flute AND he was no virtuoso on it either..whereas Keith was and an ELP show lived or died by Keith's playing ability as the keyboards carried everything musically

Anderson can't deliver what he used to deliver either, at least vocally, but that will never stop me from buying his music or seeing him in concert. Someone needed to persuade Emerson to settle for composing if he couldn't play. I'd certainly be interested in the string quartets he was said to have been writing. I'm as much of a classical music fan as a prog rock fan. Such a waste. It had to have more than just trouble playing. Untreated depression?
@topo161
7 жыл бұрын
Alienart Most likely untreated depression as well. There's a Greg Lake quote that can be looked up about Keith's suicide where he mentions that he didn't find his death particularly surprising. I think he mentioned that sometime in the late 70s Greg noticed that things didn't "feel quite right" with him. So we can probably be sure there were some mental issues that played a big role.

Same as the later Greg Lake, Mr. Anderson's voice has lowered a lot. It's not as smooth anymore and he can't always hold the tone as it used to be. He had a beautiful singing voice when he was younger. You can't hold that forever, but in good moments he sounds still good ... if you are not constantly comparing with his voice at 30 yo, that is.
