I do all kinds of drugs, but Ian MacKaye is one of the coolest people who ever lived in my eyes. And I'm sure there's plenty of drug fiends he considers amongst the coolest people (probably mostly of the deceased variety by now).

I always admired Ian's morals and motivation to build things like scenes, bands and a record label. It's dogged enthusiasm. For it to affect and inspire others positively is really great. So much better than being a negative fuck up and influencing others to be self destructive losers. Isn't the point of life to excel and survive?

I think the world also needs bands who talk about the fucked up and negative shit like Dystopia. Because to me when I’m depressed, fucked up and angry it gives me some sense of not being alone with my negative feelings when I listen to for example Dystopia or Disrupt

I couldn't stand MacKaye for the longest time------he just seemed to epitomize the self-righteous, puritanical side of punk or left wing politics. From the mid 80s to the 90s we saw him that way, but I realized that it's what fanzine goofballs and sycophants were projecting onto him. People would always twist whatever he said to be harsh and unforgiving, which set him up for those looking to react. In reality he was always pretty reasonable about his positions.

Strombo mentioned Bernie Sanders talking about people needing to listen to more Fugazi. I'm 99% certain he's referencing the memes that were shared on Facebook under now-defunct "Berned in DC" account. It was quite active 2015-2016 while Bernie was running for the Democratic party nomination. Fortunately, a handful of these memes were saved and shared via this article. Sadly, I do not see the Fugazi one but I definitely recall Fugazi being mentioned in at least one of these memes. dangerousminds.net/comments/berned_in_d.c._images_of_bernie_sanders_with_hilarious_fake_punk_rock_quote

27:00 - This is something I mull over a great deal. I cannot understand it - and without wanting to overstate it, it sometimes blows my fucking mind. MacKaye's theory that the internet is the primary cause of this development (the compression of time, if it can be thought of that way) is an interesting one, and I suppose it does play a part in this collapsing of history (to paraphrase him). Fwiw I don't think it's the main causal factor, though. So what is? I dunno - but I think capitalism is working in a different way. Very briefly - when we were kids in the '70s and '80s, the Next Big Thing was always mere months, sometimes weeks, away. Punk mushroomed at an incredible pace (look back at the many compilation LPs of unknown bands from that era as one example). Suddenly it was post-punk (e.g. Joy Division). Then it was US hardcore and Brit Punk, or whatever. The rate of evolution was incredible. This was partly driven from "below" - by enthusiasts, etc. But also, the industry itself drove things. The music business co-opted as much of this roots level activity and commodified it. So much we all know fine well. However, I think that now capitalism's work in the west has slowed down - its rate of commodification has decelerated. Why? Because bigger, easier markets are coming on line elsewhere in the world. Capitalism, the market, business etc. always takes the path of least resistance (that's the most profitable route, after all). And now that markets beyond the Occident and North America, et al, have developed somewhat, so it follows that it is they who are experiencing the dizzying rates of commodification that we once had to contend with. Summarily, the past is permitted to exist for a longer duration now - whereas in the '70s and '80s the past was buried. The cult of "This Year's Model" was endemic - planned obsolescence was rapacious. It's still with us, of course. But I think it may have slowed down somewhat. Elsewhere across the globe is where it's playing out at full velocity. Maybe. Our "time" has slowed down a bit, as a result. Fuck knows. This is all I've got for now. It's a really puzzling situation though. Kids still getting into Minor Threat would've been like Rollins et al being into Tommy Dorsey, Jimmy Dorsey, Glen Miller - look at the top 10 artists of 1940. The notion that they're who we (I'm similar age to MacKaye) would've been into them is hilarious. It seemed like the Bronze Age. Another time. One so distant that it may almost never have existed. But now 40 years ago is a far shorter duration, in a way. And it feels weird.

I like Ian but wish his worldview incorporated a more refined structural critique. He says most people are kind but then says the problems of the world are based on greed and religion. This is only half true. It misses the forest for the trees. Transfers of wealth and accumulation are based on ownership. Value generated by workers goes to ownership. This movement of wealth, of passive revenue moving from labour to owner/investor, is what makes it an exploitative relationship. Greed doesn’t really factor in in so much as the system operators how it’s been set up to. You’re either in the position of being exploited or you’re the one doing the exploiting. There’s no neutral ground and where you find yourself situated is relative. You can go to work and generate value for the owner and then come home and collect rent from your tenant. Individual morality doesn’t factor in. Being a good or bad person doesn’t matter. The system of capitalism dictates the rules and we live according to them. One person’s gain comes at another’s pain. Until the system under which we live changes it cannot be otherwise.
