Yes, Ian Paice is the Buddy Rich of Rock drumming, & in this clip Ian's whole set up of drums & cymbals is based on Buddy Rich's set up.

Mr Paice like many other rock drummers was strongly influenced by Buddy Rich. His set is virtually identical to Rich’s though it’s a mirror image because Ian is a lefty. Ian Paice’s contribution will forever distinguish him in the annals of Rock/Metal. “The Mule” is one of the greatest drum solos in the genre.

This performance is from the California Jam. The song Ian Paice plays his solo is You Fool No One. But yes he is also known to play his solo on The Mule.

"Just as good"???? He was (Uh! he still IS) way better. In my book the only one at his same level is Bonham, and not for sheer drumming technique but for creativity and inventive.

Couldn't care much about Bonham, as he wasn't in a band that really let him display his skills. Damn, hearing guys like Buddy, Ian, Neil, Keith, Mitch, & even the two Powell's, Cozy & Don really gave some inspiration to modern-drummers on how to really work The Set & work some percussion into it. Throw in Karen Carpenter as she pretty much did the same. Loved Ian's workout on his snare...

The band returning after The Mule drums - one of my favourite bits of Purple. Does it have a name?

All is The Mule song. The last part after the drum is the same before of the drum solo. they repeat that part.

@@sammy26969 I'm talking about the aggressive 'twelve-bar' -ish part they play just before they return to the main Mule motif. (Clue: it doesn't appear on the studio version of The Mule) Know what I mean?

No it doesn't, just a thing they did after the drum solo to re-introduce the main riff. Best part of the song!

I love Deep Purple but as soon as I hear a drum solo I just turn off. That goes for Neil Peart/John Bonham/Mick Tucker etc etc. I suppose if you're drummer it might be interesting LOL. Love all those drummers drumming in songs though. I even watch videos with drummers doing their thing but as soon as a solo starts I can't stand it. I went to a jazz club one night and was forced to listen to every instrumentalist in every outfit do a solo on every band playing that night - god it was dreadful especially the drum solos. Come to think of it the whoo-hooing audience members made me feel pretty sick too. It was all so self indulgent and BORING! I have seen some great Jazz over the years and none of them ever go in for the heady solo BS you get in the wanker clubs. If you're a crap jazz band do your heady crap set, then extend your stage time by every member doing a crap solo, waiting for every audience member to go whooo, whistle, Yeah to rapturous applause and head nodding when it's all crap. I went to one of these clubs with a classical guitarist one night and we had to leave.
