Maybe I'm just jaded, but to me, the names of the presets tell me something about the current state of affairs. 10 is "competitive?" Competitive with what? Most of the mainstream crap out there? 12 is "balanced?" Both of those names scream, "compromise" to me. Recently, I was walking through a hotel in Las Vegas at night and walked past a bar that was playing some recorded music, and then proceeded to walk to another venue that had live music going. The difference was shocking. No wonder I don't buy music CDs anymore. With all the advancements in equipment, it's a shame that the industry went the other way. I remember an old Saturn (automobile) that had a factory head unit with built-in real-time dynamic range compressor. I've never seen anything like that since. I guess that isn't needed these days since everything is already compressed for you. shrug. Just so there's no misunderstanding, I'm not saying anything negative about this video or the tool. I'm also way past the point of getting emotional about it. I'm just writing out what came to my mind when I saw this video.

I think a dynamic range of "twelve" is getting to the point where for many genres of music it just doesn't matter. Think about it: If your dynamic range is at a score of 20, it means there is either going to be barely audible sounds, or ear-splitting sounds. The point of compression, sensible compression, is to prevent tracks from going from barely audible to unreasonably explosive. I think a score of 12 to 15 is probably the final ideal, but then, maybe there's feasible reason to have it at 20.

I want to get this (and the loudness penalty plugin) but after watching videos and reading articles/ forums, I’m still struggling to understand what the exact actions are to improve these elements that make a difference to the overall final streamed track? Is this more to indicate whether to increase or decrease compression/ limiting?

That's pretty trick. I like how the graphic shows compressed music for what it really is: narrow. I'm a little used to my Blue Cat/Ozone setup and watching this I felt it was a little "backward" with the amount of energy in a given region of the track, but I think it makes more sense now. I've used the donation version of TT Meter, but once I got calibrated with the other tools I kind of ran with them. But now I'm moving my stuff to a Mac, so new things in new places... ;-)

so, if I understand it right, the color remains same "scale" no matter the chosen preset, and the spectrum should preferably remain outsides the dotted reference lines, also should then it not indicate actual "loudness" at all, just a difference of peak/average dynamics?

It's a good alternative to staring at numbers when automating volume before a mastering limiter.

In limiting mode you suggest that 8 is "the minimum". Just to clarify, you don't mean that ideally people should be going to 7 or 6...? Minimum in this case means "maximum"? :)
@MrWilliWonker

So is PSR 8 roughly equivalent to DR 8 in the finished master?
@ST-fl5fy

JonnyInfinite trying to figure that out too. So when he says minimum 8 seems 8 means loud as it should go in regards to LUFT?
@JonnyInfinite

Hi Low I assume so, though I've heard some great records that go to DR 7. Below that though the sound gets super flat

You look like Brad Arnold from 3 Doors Down. Anyways, I use TT Offline DR Meter and I think anything less than DR8 and with loudness over -8 DB sounds bad to my ears. If I ever produce or make music, I'll make sure it's DR10, with loudness -10DB, Peaking at -0.0. Recent music is so loud and brickwalled mostly DR5 or 6. It sounds bad.

Ian, I am primarily a professional video editor facebook.com/tom.daigon thats also is a life long guitarist. Please forgive my somewhat noobish question. I really like the concept of preserving dynamic range in my rock/blues genre compositions. So Dynameter really intrigues me. But the concept of the K Meter also appeals to my musical sensibilities. Can these 2 tools be used together in either the mixing or mastering process ? If so how would that best be done? BTW I enjoy the clarity and presentation of your product videos.

I did end up buying the the Dynameter several days ago. And have found it immediately making a difference in my mixes. Also went thru the process of calibrating my monitors for K-20, K-14 and K-12. I find both changes a boon to m y music making ;)

You state that you measured Thriller, Smells like Teen Spirit and Uptown Funk. You skip which versions you measured. Thriller has been rereleased and remastered quite a few times, and each version got worse. The very first release of Thriller is by far the best one, but also hard to come by. The SACD version comes REALLY close to the original one, but it's hard to find and very expensive nowadays. The same goes for SLTS... I don't know The different releases for Uptown Funk, I don't like the song... Please be more detailed.

8 as a minimum? :( Yikes! I thought the 9~10 demo sample was unlistenable, and even the source, floating around 11, sounded pretty godawful. Seems there's already been a lot of compression or limp mixing going on. Baby steps, I suppose.

Fair enough - we're 100% sincere about the money-back guarantee, though. If you'd like to give it a go and find it's not a great fit, we'll refund you in full, no questions asked. Which isn't THAT different from a trial version...😛
