Ian 30 strokes per 50m vs Grant 35 strokes per 50m, so Ian saved energy for last 2 laps(increase frequency to 33 & 32 strokes)

Amazing film for a couple of reasons: firstly, the way Thorpe dropped Hackett coming off the final turn - he got a body length on Hackett in seconds and that was the end of the race and then the lovely chat they had while waiting for the other swimmers to finish. Thorpe especially looked quite animated.

amazing kicks!!! Thorpe is kicking less frequently but manages to swim faster than Hackett.

This world record has been obliterated since, by 7 seconds due to the suits... Almost 1 second per 100.

Amazing footage of watching from underwater, seeing the fight. Grant, without Ian, would have won more races. Ian in long-distance kept his huge feet till the last and goes into a 6 kick. Lethal.

I notice so many things that are bad technique compared to the way races are now. They are both looking forward and galloping, thus causing their legs to drop and their kicks to stop momentarily. It is so weird to see old swimming and notice how far we have come in the sport

You shouldn’t look straight down though, you should look somewhere inbetween looking straight ahead and looking straight down

@@dragos9134 it should be somewhere between 45 or 55 degrees! Looking straight down, and going for inhaling is hard, that's why most Swimmers don't look straight down!
