Such a shame as you say Arthur when a wrestler is described as "past it." As Barrelling clearly was here. In his day he was awesome but he was like a good TV programme. Too much, too long loses its appeal.

When I mentioned Orig being past it on a recent post I was thinking more literally - that he clearly couldn't move very well in the ring any more and it was time to retire which to be fair he did. What I was thinking here though is that Bartelli doesn't look like a wrestler anymore. I'm sure he could still wrestle, and was probably still tough, but he looks like your granddad - and this is show business. It's a problem all over the wrestling world that people go on too long, but it seemed especially common with British wrestling at this time, with lots of old timers that looked past it (whether they were or not). They weren't well cast any more. I understand why they didn't want to stop, and even why promoters and bookers didn't want to refuse work to guys that were hugely respected, but I used to think, once you look too old it doesn't matter how good you actually are. Of course, some people just look old - I imagine Ray Steele looked 40 at school. Ironically, Bartelli cut a gave a great "retirement speech" on a match I'm posting next, where he outlined why not to go on too long! Perhaps I'm being harsh.
