Good lesson here - J pickups are often made in two widths - one is about 3mm wider. You would think the wider one goes by the bridge and the narrower goes up by the neck where the strings are a BIT narrower but in my Washburn I found my bridge J pickup was a narrow! Luckily EMG makes J's in both widths and are available as singles. Have a GZR P bass + a narrow J HZ paired with a BTC HZ EQ and like it a lot.

That hum could be if the cavity isn't properly shielded, you need to check that your grounds are good and the cavity makes a shielded enclosure, not just the control cavity access panel but that the sidewalls have copper shielding making contact with the shielding tape on the panel and also make sure your pots are not making contact with the shielding paint or copper tape on the sidewalls, that can short your tone pcb or induce noise... for the pcb you can put some non conductive kapton tape on your board to insulate it from making direct contact with the shielding... I'd also check the cable you are using, if it isn't properly shielded it will just act as a long antenna for unwanted hum and rf noise... Id also turn the dip switches down so you didn't get so much treble , last thing I'd suggest would be to remove the bridge and double check the bridge ground to make sure there is enough contact,sometimes with painted bridges the paint doesn't allow to make a solid ground contact, so id take a metal file and scrape a bit of paint off of the underside of the bridge and get a good ground. then you could always check the ground wire with a multi meter to see if you got continuity...anything up to 5 ohms is OK, but if you see like 10 kilo ohms or mega ohms then you got a high resistant short that will act like an open circuit. Now this only applies to passive p/ups, but if you have actives I believe that EMG tells you to NOT hook up to bridge ground with active p/ups for shock hazard reasons...

Hey lobster, I’ve watched a few of your mod project videos, this one is my 2nd favorite behind the Code Red SUB. I’ve noticed in both of them you have a passive tone as well as a 2 band preamp. Are there any benefits to using the tone control as opposed to cutting the treble pot? Is the treble tuned to a different frequency than the tone control? I’m very curious as to the decision. Thanks a bunch Edit: I forgot it was also present on the mod you made of the dingwall ng3
@LowEndLobster
Жыл бұрын
Hey Ryan! Great question. I've found that the tone control acts differently vs an active treble cut with the EQ unit. Looking at the new-ish Harley Benton JP and JJ models, the JP is passive and the JJ has a two band EQ only. Even with the treble cut and bass boost, I can never get the same type of warm round sound that I can with the JP rolling down the tone control.

Did you keep the quick connect clips on it or did you snip them and solder it? I had installed these on a bass of mine and the hum was driving me crazy. So I bought hvac shielding tape and messed with the quick connect clips. I think I reversed the clips on the tone pot. That bass is silent now. 👍🏼 I like how you kept the tone pot for this bass. Maybe this should be a feature on more basses. The reverse p always sounds great.
