I think the basic premise of Kendi's claim is flawed. He says that to be non-racist is a claim that signals neutrality, but he doesn't give any supporting reasons. If someone chooses to be not racist, by definition they reject the notion that one should ever be judged, or discriminated against because of skin color. That stands in stark contrast to racism. So I'm lost as to how "non-racism" is simply a "mask for racism," as he claims.
@angelgalindo1875
4 жыл бұрын
Carmie San Paolo What Kendi is saying, (feel free to read any of his books) is that being anti-racist means you are acknowledging when you have been racist or you can see when policies and ideas are racist and speak out against them, and push for policies and ideas that fight and promote racial equality...When you are being racist, you are promoting ideas and policies that bring-forth racial inequality....So how can anyone be neutral, “not racist”? You are either being anti-racist and speaking out against racism and calling it out, or you’re letting racist ideas and policies grow and spread. How is there any neutrality to that? Most people who say they’re “not racist” will usually saying something racist and then claim that they can’t be racist because they have a black friend, family member, etc. but when you say something that promotes or expresses the idea of racial inequality you’re being racist. But Kendi is not labeling people as racist or antiracist, it changes with actions, ideas, and words, it’s not a permanent stamp. So you can say something racist, then say something anti-racist. So at two different times in your life you were being racist and then you were being antiracist, you are not either one all the time, but at moments.

Meg Garbincus I read the article you suggested. The author seems to be an assimilationist, his whole argument is that problems that Dr. Kendi bring up in his book are the fault of blacks and non-whites, and not racist policies and racist systems put in place by people who want to remain in power and increase their wealth. If you read Dr. Kendi’s books you’d understand that racist policies and ideas are/were created to justify someone(s) gain of power and wealth. Most times than not, people create those policies and ideas to justify their gains in power and wealth, while people like the author you suggested take the bait and argue people’s circumstances are their own fault, while keeping the wealthy wealthy and powerful powerful. The author suggest that capitalism wasn’t racist, but America’s economic system was built on benefiting only either white, wealthy, men, or all three. It’s not until policies that are put in place to make sure the system is equal to anyone that makes that system tolerable of equality. But you take those policies away, and the system will again benefit, white, rich, men.

Racism of the gaps. This man claims any disparity as racism -- anyone knows there are numerous more significant factors that determine outcomes, other than prejudice. If you present a bill that has zero racism within it and then say well because there are unequal outcomes its racist, you are failing to try an understand the actual causation of certain outcomes. Say you give 2 people 500$ and one person decides to save and invest the money and you give another person 500$ and they spend it on a phone. Then 1 month later person 1 has money and person 2 has none. The outcomes are different yes, so fo we then attribute that to discrimination? No, we evaluate what caused the disparity -- and there inlies the problem with anti-racism. It's called racism of the gaps, where if you seek to investigate why the disparity is happening you are labeled a racist, for anti racism says unequal outcomes automatically equals racism. Which is wrong.

What ibram won't tell you and seems obvious to me, is that if you can label someone a racist, either by action or inaction, you can marginalize them, you can control them, make them fearful and subservient. It's a power move, plain and simple. And he lectures from a very privileged position. He can go into any room with white people and point to the racists, and if you deny it, you're racist. He's invulnerable to anyone criticizing him or questioning him cause only racists would do that. It's the perfect grift.

SUCKS. I'm not racist but also have a life to live and an entirely different "calling." In my opinion the content of Jesus' life and teachings are the real answer to racism and I'll not be distracted from trying to point that out to people to teach or persuade them of the value of largely secular ideas about solving "racism. Jesus is the answer. not the ideas in Kendi's book. And here's a fact Jesus ain't trying to make a living by solving a contemporary social issue.

It shows that our tribalisms lead to contradictory actions and beliefs many times. This is why it’s so critical to acquire the “Sociological Imagination” that C. White people are an ethnicity. We have been socialized to not identify as an ethnic people but to be individualists with no ethnicity. But we have retained our instincts to defend our ethnic interests. “Anti-racism” is so evil because A) It gaslights White people in to believing that we have no ethnicity and B) It makes us conscious of the natural biases we have for our own people, a characteristic we share with all ethnic people, but it doesn’t give us the context. We are told our bias is an ideology instead of the truth: A shared characteristic with all other peoples on the planet. All ethnicities are biased for their own people and discriminate against minority ethnicities. You are being conditioned to hate the essence of who you are. Don’t listen to it.
