Dave Dodge depends on the lake and time of year. Typically early and late ice is better for jigging and midwinter is best for tip ups. This was in January on Fort Peck and 80% of our fish came on tip ups. It is more fun to jig them but tip ups tend to be most productive year round

So how do I catch a trout, sorry, but what?

Here is a summary of the video. To catch lake trout, set up on steep transitions of depth in between 40-60 ft from the shoreline. Set up tip ups rigged with larger shiner minnows across these depths set halfway down the water column. Jig larger lures like our Jigging Lure or Rattle Rip Lure halfway down the water column with large swoops. Lake trout feed upwards and roam aggressively so they love to chase both bait styles from the bottom and charge up 20-30 ft. Work you bait upwards while they charge in to give them a chase. Keep your drag loose.

Why didn’t you keep that fish that was a big fish

We generally catch and release fish especially the big ones but encourage responsible harvesting. When filming and traveling it makes life easier to just let em go but thanks for the comment!

Because a big laker is usually older than most humans. The grow extremly slowly. You wanna ruin a fishery take the big ones and in less than a couple years you'll be wondering where they went.
