I just think that the Blue Lagoon should be automatically closed down by the authorities when they're saying that there's only a few days till an eruption. Now they've got an idea about how regularly and how big the eruption will be then just close the Blue Lagoon to tourists, offer them refunds or rebooking, and govt should pay staff while the premises are closed. Once it's all clear and safe to return they can then re-open the site and get the tourists back in. I just think that Iceland has to wake up to the fact that this area will be prone to regular eruptions for the foreseeable future and plan around this, including how to safely deal with tourists at the BL. Thankfully this new round of eruptions are becoming much more predictable so it should then be easier to accommodate these. Keeping the Blue Lagoon open until an eruption actually occurs though is a recipe for disaster and who's going to be the one to take responsibility if tourists were to die during an eruption?

Tourists were visiting the volcanic island despite an upgrade in the danger level that they weren't advised of. Twenty-two people lost their lives and 25 were injured on that fateful day. They didn't have time to even run out towards the boats, it was too late and happened so suddenly. The composition of rock under the power plant and Blue Lagoon is very different than where the recent eruptions occurred so a fissure right UNDER the Blue Lagoon is quite remote. Better to keep calm and realistic about risks, Rob.

So I hope the Blue Lagoon isn't ignoring the risk-- "it's safe...until it isn't."

I would not stay or go to the BL, but I probably wouldn't go even without all the seismic/volcanic activity. Its just not my thing. But it's not a completely stupid thing to do, either. The tourist that filmed his self-evacuation from a BL hotel during the last eruption said that they were instructed to keep a packed bag with all important documents, etc. with them at ALL times during their stay. Eating in the dining room, walking on the property, going to the pool....you take that bag. So there's no "going back to the room" or getting dressed - you just leave, and hopefully you planned well when you packed that bag. Secondly - the roads were not covered the instant the eruption started. It took a few hours. Third, they monitor the water temp in the BL and in the power plant constantly. They will know if it starts heating up. Lastly, the geology is working in their favor. Lava takes the path of least resistance, and that is why its been erupting in the same general area. They've been able to predict the eruption sites pretty accurately. Is it a risk? Absolutely. But it's a calculated one, and so long as no one is being told otherwise (like the White Island catastrophe) then reasonable people will come to different conclusions about what they want to do.

Having seen the footage, I can safely say that the site has expanded and developed massively since I visited it over fifteen years ago. There was just one large pool open for public/tourist use, one closed off for guests of the spa/ clinic's sole use, and a third walled off because the water in it was dangerously hot. There might have been other pools around but not developed for use, and which could not be seen. It was a beautiful place when I saw it, and even moreso now. So, if Reykjanes volcano does its worst and sends lava its way, it will be a sad thing to see it destroyed. Nevertheless, Nature will have Her way, and there's nothing we can do to stop it. She might decide to spare the place this time, but if not, loss of jobs and revenue notwithstanding, we must be very grateful that we had such a place on our world, and we allowed to enjoy it for the time we did.

Do the "experts" take into account barometric pressure? A combination of high tide and low pressure weather system should work together to trigger an impending eruption. The Sun has quieted down so, hoping this expected eruption will be mild or not happen right away. Baby needs to burp though.
@JanKunzmann

It's very unlikely that weather systems have a noticeable impact to the eruption cycle. There's however a slight indicator that tides (resp. the deformation of the ground due to the tidal influence of the moon) can trigger due eruptions, but it will still very much depend on the pressure that has built up underground. I recommend Shawn Willsey's channel here on KZitem to learn more about that. He's a geologist and does regular updates on the situation, with scientific background.
