Re: Bohm’s alleged ‘Nazism’. I’ve heard so many stories about the behaviour of Astro-German musicians in the 30s and 40s and I’m hesitant to believe any of them. I don’t think people who have never lived under a totalitarian regime have earned the right to criticise the actions of those who have.

I agree completely - far too many people have raced to judgement on Böhm, Karajan, Strauss and others - the fear under which these people lived their lives is, thankfully, unimaginable to us today.

@@andreaguarino8207 Who are you to proclaim such a thing! You may well say that you would act more nobly under a totalitarian regime by rejecting pervasive dogma, but I very much doubt so -- fear alone would drive you to conformity. Böhm, too, in being one of the most influential (and I dare say prolific) conductors of the 20th century has had a huge positive artistic influence by faithfully extending the grand (Austro-Gernman) tradition established by our predecessors. While Böhm left us the most exciting complete of the "Ring" (1966-67) with Nilsson, Windgassen, Adam, Brouwenstein, Greindl, Neidlinger, King, Rysanek ! Documentaries about John Wayne don't mention that he voted for Richard Nixon, and thus was partly responsible for the mass bombings of Vietnam and the Watergate scandal. Many american actors, artists and musicians you like were members of organisations of that country and supported their government at that time. Same with many East Block ones. My point is that you can't choose where and when you were born, and you can never have hindsight beforehand. Personally, I hate when politics, religion or sexuality issues take away reasons for liking music and art.
