The international court of justice, the UN's top court, has laid down a provisional ruling ordering Israel to halt its offensive in Rafah after South Africa, which brought a genocide case against Israel to the court, requested additional emergency measures.

Reading out the court's ruling, its president, Nawaf Salam, said provisional measures ordered by the court in March did not fully address the situation in Gaza now, and conditions had been met for a new emergency order.
