There’s also a conspiracy that JLO chose to wear the dress in order to take the attention away from Diddy (since he had recently been involved in a triple shooting at a Manhattan nightclub and was facing charges) and put it on herself instead. Based on how iconic the dress is to this day, I’d say she definitely succeeded.

In my opinion, I agree with her that the red dress was more attractive and unique in color and pattern, but I think what made it forgettable was its silhouette. Like, the green dress draws the eye from bottom to top, with a particular focus on the center of the body- especially with the jeweled crotch. However, the red dress’ higher neckline and glittery belt that goes around the waist scattered the focus enough to make it seem rather unremarkable.

I think something about the dress that gets overlooked about when Jennifer wore it is that it breathed new life into the Versace brand. It had been 3 years since Gianni had passed and a lot of people doubted that Donatella could fill his shoes and the attention the dress got when Jennifer wore it clearly proved naysayers wrong. The dress is practically made for Jennifer, it suits her body and skin tone so well. Personally if I was Jennifer, I would also wear the dress hella times because how many people can say they wore something that helped invent something that is used on a daily basis. That’s incredible. Unpopular opinion but I love the reimagined version and the collection they did inspired by the print

Any curvy woman knows the phenomenon of wearing the same thing as another woman only to be seen as sluty. Not that, that was the dynamic with J-Lo but the idea that the dress was more provocative on her figure certainly was. I was also a child at the time but I remember her body before and after the dress being a frequent topic of discussion to a degree that was not as common with other women. So it makes sense that people made such a big deal out of being able to see so much of it. Lol I love that J-lo owns 500 different versions of the dress that created image searching. I dont blame her one bit, she got to be a momment, she can revel in it all she wants. I also love that she wore an even more revealing version of the dress at 50 years old (even if I dont particularly like the design)

Also, this may be a controversial thought but IMO, the fact that she is latina also added to the whole fantasy/ eroticism of it. I think the problem is that the 2019 version is too obvious and too overdone. The original one had a ton of skin showing, but it was offset by the long sleeves and how simple the style of the dress was. The 2019 one completely loses the simplicity and adds too many unnecessary details. The fabric seems less delicate, too.

I don't really understand the problem with the repeated style. It's obviously JLo's and Donatella's signature and holds a pivotal moment of 21st century fashion. JLo completely embodies who the dress was inspired by: Latin American or Caribbean nature/culture. It was an amazing moment for latina girls to see an icon portraying high fashion and curvy physicality! I think it's totally great for JLo to claim that dress as her trademark, and as we can see in all fashion trends, they repeat every few decades so it was a really smart move on Versace's part to repeat the styles for their collection. Early 2000s fashion is here to stay babyyyy

I think her warmer skin tone makes the dress pop and that's why it looks so good on her and it was so easily overlooked on others. If she wore the same dress 20 years later we would criticize Versace for not updating it, I think the anniversary one was a great homage, also there are not many women in JLos age bracket that can pull it off, with more skin showing, 20 years later. I feel like the green jungle dress completely overshadows the person wearing it, while the pink one doesn't do that. It makes the wearer invisible in my opinion. The green one is perfect if the wearers are models as the clothing has to pop out more than the model in that case. However, if you're a normal person or if you're job isn't to advertise the dress itself, then the pink one would be a better option.

JLo managed to pull it off because American media at the time treated her as an Exotique Latina™️ (those days are gone obviously). To American standards, she was a woman who had more curves (remember a size -0 was standard), more spice™️ than the girls you’d usually see on the red carpet....she was Jenny from the Block so of course she was wearing something provocative! To that point, she was wearing something provocative to an award show that is considered classy and the peak of the music industry. Grammy’s red carpet wasn’t about the fashion so much (yet). (Risqué) Fashion was left for MTV red carpets.
