Our family went on an overnight campout at the Lunch Peak fire lookout near Sandpoint, Idaho. createplaytravel.com/
The views from the top were spectacular of the Cabinet Mountain Wilderness, the Selkirk Mountains and Lake Pend Oreille.
We brought basic camping gear such as sleeping bags, mats, pillows, a change of clothes, basic cosmetics, water, food, snacks, camping chairs and fire wood. Because we were up on a hill, it was windy the whole time we were there. We parked our Jeep to create a fire barrier from the wind, so we could start a small camp fire.
After we set up the fire lookout, we headed out to go on a hike to Lightning Creek and Char Falls. We even found some ripe huckleberries along the trail! All along Lightning Creek, we discovered lots of places to scramble over rocks and walk in the water. Char Falls is a beautiful 50-foot waterfall that cascades into a pool of cold water. We enjoyed the view and Andy swam in the water beneath the falls.
After our hike we came back to the fire lookout, started a camp fire and enjoyed a simple dinner of hot dogs, chips and hummus, fresh blueberries and instant noodles. Easy and of course the kids loved it!
We had a great time camping in the fire lookout. A deck goes all the way around the edge of the fire lookout, which is a great spot to stand and take in the view. The lookout is on public forest land, and we had several groups of ATVers visit us for the view and a rest stop. Just down the hill from the Lunch Peak fire lookout, a convenient outhouse is situated nearby.
On the second day, we drove about 35 minutes to the Moose Lake trailhead. On the way, we saw a moose walking down the road. We really enjoyed the Moose Lake family hike. The trail is 2 miles each way and leads to a pristine lake surrounded by forest. We had the whole lake to ourselves, during our visit. Our kids swam in the water and climbed up on a large rock near the shore. The bottom of the lake was covered in about a foot of mud, so we had to go barefoot. Overall, Moose Lake is a gorgeous destination for families who can hike the whole 4 miles from the parking lot to the lake and back to the parking lot.
Our family adventure at Lunch Peak fire lookout and hikes to Lightning Creek, Char Falls, and Moose Lake were very memorable. We've learned that with a little planning, it's easy to take our kids on outdoor adventures.
