Good video. Here on continent (France) there are many varities of similarly looking Lepiote that are very toxic or indigestable. As you have rightly pointed out, the snakeskin zigzag shaft and sheer size is the best method to identify the Macrolepiota Procera.

Here too, I don't think they look very similar, but then I have been doing this a long time! Always good to have multiple ID points to be certain ☺️

This is my favorite mushroom - you can actually eat it raw, but its really great when you cut in large chunks, and lightly cook in butter and put on a toast - the smell is amazing! If we find these after mushroom gathering, its the first thing we do when getting back home. Sadly I have not found a good way to store it for later - other mushroom can be freezed or put in pork fat or marinated, this one is best to use imediately. In this place you should have them yearly - I found a plce in my local woods where these are quite a lot - not telling about that place to anyone! Ha ha ha (i consider myself a mushroom expert, so please - you - a random reader - dont try to eat it raw)

You can air dry them to eat them later. They last 7-8 months if properly stored and they preserve that lovely, nutty taste.

You should not eat parasol raw. Based on what I've read, it destroys red blood cells. While you would probably have to eat quite a bit to notice the effect, that is at least unhealthy and potentially dangerous. It can also upset your stomach.

Thank you for the information! I actually identified a small patch of these near my home in southeastern US. The particular ones I saw were more cone-shaped but the same color patterns, the same gills, and the stems had the sliding ring as you showed here. It's difficult at times to determine whether toxic or safe at first glance. But thanks to your effort, I deem these safer and now I have the confidence to cook these. I can't wait as I rather enjoy mine sauteed in butter and placed over a nice steak or a nice baked potato. 😋😀 Thanks for sharing this video!😊

I went out today foraging and found a lot of very similar mushrooms in the woods, thought they were parasols from a distance but looking at them realised they were dapperlings - so frustrating as the only bits I could positively identify were some small boletes to collect Reading a comment below from 9 months ago stating the dry autumn - well I do believe that's the issue here in London dry as anything in the local woods

These look amazing! Usually at this time of year I forage for Bay Boletes on the commons near my home although this year I have yet to find any. Presumably something to do with the dry weather early this autumn. Have you noticed a lack of wild mushrooms at all? Based in East Sussex, near Lewes

Does the edible parasol mushroom always have that snakelike appearance on the stem, and is the stem always hollow. I have what appears to be an edible parasol mushroom with all the correct identification marks, but those two markers. Smooth stem with micro lines going up and down the stem and white substance webby in texture and white inside the stem. All else is correct ID.

I keep finding fungi that look and smell like mushrooms but not confident to pick and eat them.

Looking and smelling like mushrooms is very broad and subjective... Mushroom ID is all about the detail! Where are you based? Maybe I can recommend some good resources...
