I'm always happy to hear stories about BB Mopars running "the 509" cam, especially a B-engine 383 or 400 that's been 'de-smogged'. That short stroke and skirted block, along with the array of intakes, and maybe a set of TrickFlow 240s!! With ARP hardware, or better yet, updated lighter, stronger pistons and rods, "the 509" and LET IT EAT!

Sounds awesome man! My first car was a 1974 Dodge Challenger that my dad gave me for my 17th birthday. It was an original 318 but before I got my license at 18 I found a 1971 Chrysler Newport that was complete but had been sitting for several years. It had a 440 and a 727 transmission, I bought both of them (in 1992) for $300. I rebuilt it with forged pistons, ported/polished 906 heads, I bought the Mopar Performance purple shaft 509/292 hydraulic flat tappet cam, my brother gave me an old 1987 Weiand tunnel ram that had 2 Holley 450 carbs and he sold me a Hughes 3500 stall converter. I bought a 391 posi third member for the 8 3/4, I was lucky my car had that being a 318 car originally. Also, one of my brothers friends plumbed the tunnel ram with a spray bar, it had a nitrous solenoid at the back and a fuel solenoid at the front and was jetted for a 150 shot. Talk about a helluva first car! It was so much fun! I was so proud because I built everything, installed everything tuned it and everything as a 17/18 year old kid with very little help from my brother. He's 11 years older than me, I grew up helping him work on his 1973 Plymouth barracuda that was built very similar to my car originally. I have so many great memories cruising speedway here in Tucson and racing at the illegals. I miss those days so much! Thanks for sharing the video, the sound really brings back memories! All I know about the cam for certain, as it was installed in the 440 6bbl Roadrunner by someone before me, is that it's definitely a Purple Stripe cam, it uses flat tappet hydraulic lifters, and makes my headers and FBO equipped, 6bbl 440 demand that I let it pull to at least 6k RPMs. I've had other experienced Mopar fanatics tell me it certainly sounds like the 292/509, and I say it certainly explains the engine power range. I owned a real V code 70 GTX 440 + 6 with the 4 Speed many years ago, same color scheme... Mine had the sandalwood interior. I actually saved the car. The exterior sheet metal was incredibly perfect, but I had to put a new floor in the car, so I ordered one cut out of another 70 Plymouth down in Arizona, then hauled up to Michigan where it was installed. With all the sheet metal work done, I then went after the engine. The six pack intake and carbs was in the trunk. I meticulously went through these and restored them to original. The engine got Michigan 77 bearings, fully grooved rods and main bearings, melling high-volume oil pump, sealed power hydraulic lifters, mild Port work in the heads, super comp headers. With the factory gears, 3.55, this car went 11.78 quarter mile. So basically all I did to the stock engine was a little Port work in the heads, racer Brown hydraulic cam, headers and rebuild the carbs. Stock compression ratio. Always very impressed with the six pack cars as I owned three of them. The sound of these things and how they run... Truly amazing. They were Apex cars of their time , and I would put them right there with the hemis.

@@MrJohnnyDistortion Not in my 70 Roadrunner. It's a 71 block, but standard bore, AND it has ALL of the 6bbl parts: heavier (stronger) rods, offset harmonic balancer. I changed the hydraulic lifters as I had problems with 2 sticking, and the springs, locks and retainers (10° vs 7° stock) and pushrods although the pushrods looked ok. All Comp Cams, and it really needed that. When I first got it, as it would really start coming on strong, soon after, around 5k RPMs, it would fall off pretty bad. I suspected the springs were weak, so when I had the new springs and hardware installed on the heads, I had the old springs tested just to know, and they were way down on pressure open and closed. The new lifters have been flawless, and the new springs and hardware keep that 440 6bbl pulling hard to 6,200 RPMs. I'm in the process of having a 572 aluminum block stroker built, switching to an Indy ModMan 6bbl single plane intake, MaxWedge port size for the TrickFlow 270 heads, solid roller cam.

Thanks for the thumbs up Onedge70. I have yet to and may never confirm the Purple Stripe cam that came in the 440 in my Roadrunner, BUT the 440 itself is close to stock, "stock" in this case means the heavier, stronger "6 pack" rods, forged steel crank, and the standard bore pistons with the "eyebrow" valve reliefs. The comparable 4bbl CFM rating of the 1,350 CFM on the 6bbl would be about 925 CFM, and although the intake is a dual plane, it makes all around good power and torque. Anyway, I have had a number of MOPAR guys w/experience say they believe my PS cam must be the 292/.509 from the sound at 900-950 RPMs, and for headers and a cam, along with the intake and carbs, to have a 440 pull SO STRONG into the 6k RPM range where it should roll off the curve in the mid 5k range, it MUST be that cam. That's the only explanation.

If its a street car the 284/484 hydraulic or the 292/528 mechanical purple cams are better. Sounds good though
@avman1339
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. Yes, now and over the last 8 years or so I drive it on the street 90% of the time. I have just bought a Bill Mitchell aluminum block as the foundation for a 541 stroker, with an easy goal of 700 ft lbs torque, over as flat and wide a RPM range as possible. I believe my horsepower will fall in the 6XX range. Even after that goes under the hood, I expect the ratio of track to street % of use will change to more track time, but time spent cruising will still be more than 1320 rips. I'm not sure why you would say the 292/.528" lift mechanical cam would be "better" "if it's a street car"? I'd love to feel the added power of the higher lift and the clatter of a solid lifter cam, but the ease of maintenance of "Mopar's largest hydraulic lifter cam" makes sense as to why someone would have chosen it. My 541 will use a solid flat tappet cam, unless my builder can make a strong, convincing argument for some other choice. I want the RPM capability of solid vs hydraulic lifters, but I have concerns about solid ROLLER lifters, as it seems oiling can be a problem at idle and in stop and go traffic, and having them rebuilt over time is a given. I also don't want the weight or complexity of a hydraulic roller lifter, and with the larger diameter Mopar (and AMC) lifters, the cam profile can be closer to that of a roller cam than any other manufacturer (Ford, GM, Pontiac, etc). I figure with quality valve train components, a fairly moderate lift and spring pressure, put together right, I shouldn't have to check or adjust lash very often.
@avman1339
2 жыл бұрын
I've since decided to go with a 4.50" stroke crank for a 572 cu in displacement. No clearancing, same price. Also switched from flat tappet solid to solid roller lifters. I may wind up turning more RPMs than I originally thought, especially if I add the nitrous I'm having the rings gapped for (up to) a 350HP shot. That should put the horsepower in the 900-1000HP range.

One front fender was primer, no real rust. The seller was a parts store guy, who had it maybe 6 months. I met the original owner, and he said his wife drove the car all the time. $1,700 and I was 16 starting my senior year of high school. No, hydraulic flat tappet. It's the largest lift and duration HFT cam that Mopar Performance used to offer. .509" lift, 292° duration. It's a "fun" cam, when you have enough engine and gear to use the higher RPM range power it provides, with the 6bbl intake and a 4.10 rear gearset, it works well for me, and the 440 6bbl has "natural" low end torque. Is this the 108 lobe separation or the 114 lobe separation cam ?
@avman1339
3 жыл бұрын
My guess would be 108 but I was not aware that MOPAR offered the hydraulic 292°/.509 cam in 2 versions. I don't actually know for sure that that is the "509" cam vs the "Street Hemi" grind which I believe was 284° and had around .488 lift. The cam is definitely a PS cam, but it was already in the 440 when I bought the car. The strong performance in the 5k to 6k RPM range really points to the 292/509. Other than an intake that makes a lot of air and fuel available, it's a dual plane, and I have 1⅞" headers, so the only thing that explains high power output in the upper RPM range is that it must be the "509" cam, the highest lift/longest duration hydraulic cam MOPAR ever offered.

Thanks for the comment. The cam came in the 440 6bbl in the car when I bought it, so I believe it's the "old grind" .509/292° If I wasn't building a stroker motor, I'd have the specs checked. I changed the springs and lifters out as I suspected the springs were weak from wear. I was right, and my reward is a 440 6bbl with a stock "6 pack" crank, rods, and pistons that has basic factory 1978 #452 (hardened valve seats) heads that pulls HARD all the way to 6,200 RPMs. It DEMANDS that I let it spin up, it is not "forced", at all. The most likely reason for that is the cam, and that's why I'm so sure it's the 292/.509 and not the 284/480 cam.

@@moparmen1 No, manual brakes, which I just upgraded to 6 piston Wilwood disc on all 4 corners. 12.8" front and 12.2" rear, still manual. I pull about 12" of vacuum at idle.

I wouldn't stand in front of that monster, you might get sucked up in the intake if he hits the throttle!👍

is that a union ironworker sticker in the back window ???

No, it's a sticker I need to remove. It's from what was a local shop, veteran owned, that did all sorts of work on classic cars, and the owner and I hit it off well, and he was a very "private" individual. Unfortunately, the owner of the building he was leasing, after the shop paid for lots of upgrades and additions, jacked the cost of rent way up. He was already struggling with "customers" who took advantage of his way of bartering the money he would receive for work done, which he donated to the Wounded Warrior Project. He lost his desire to carry on with his business, and no matter how many times I called or texted, he never replied. Sad loss for our community and our hobby.

Should have focused at 14 seconds also. Be proud of your ride regardless of what is on your ride! Doesn't sound bad and I think it would have been better toward the end to open up the hood and listen to it as it idles, I love it and you be careful. One second of clown fest and all the hard work down the drain. Just a plain ol opinion. Good day to all and enjoy your beautiful ride.

Thanks for asking. Mild shadetree" kind of build. Mopar largest flat tappet hydraulic cam = 292° .509" 1⅞" headers HP mech fuel pump. The factory 6bbl carbs and intake is strong! Factory pistons around 9.5:1 CR.

@@AlienGrade Put this cam in a 383.....it'll sound even lumpier! Also....it'll pull to almost 7000.....beware of a stock bottom end! Forged internals necessary!

@@AlienGrade The 383 Magnum is no slouch. Match an aftermarket cam, springs, lifters, intake, carb, and headers to the torque converter you have or get a looser one, if it's not a manual transmission, and a 3:55 or 3:91 ring and pinion gear. Rear tires that will grab, and watch it wake up!
