I really think that Seth McFarlane really just wanted to write Star Trek, so he disguised the early episodes of The Orville as "a parody", and by the time it was clearly no longer a parody, it was too much of its own thing to call a ripoff. And it leads to awesome moments like this.

This is partially accurate. Seth MacFarlane did want to write Star Trek. He was an extra in Star Trek Enterprise and was a huge fan of TNG and with the direction the Abrams/Kurtzman Trek was going he did want the Orville to counter it and bring back a better version of Star Trek closer to Rodenberrrys vision. However it was actually FOX at the time that forced the comedy into the Orville they wouldn't back it without it! I just hope that if there is a Season 4 that Disney doesn't ruin it by injecting their crap into it!

This right here is why The Orville is truly more Star Trek that modern star trek actually is. The pain and Anger you feel towards the Mochlans, that only gets worse when you see Topa enter. Then Bortus's speech breaks your heart. Then slowly you feel the hope as the committee starts to stand in solidarity. And when you find out the Mochlans have been expelled from the Union you're happy and just relieved. Then finally, like all good star trek always did, the episode leaves you hopeful for a better tomorrow. BUT still leaves you with questions about the outcomes of the decision and where this universe you're watching will find itself next week. The Fall, Rise and Leveling out of the hopes and dreams for a better tomorrow that Star trek has sadly forgotten. Perfection.

AActually more. I was thinking about why Star Trek kind of bothers me, and looking at Orville I can see why. The Moclans aren't 'allies' they are part of the Union, but their attitudes are abysmal. But they make all the weapons meaning the Union has tolerated this behaviour for decades or centuries. Star Trek always plays up the idea of humans just being perfect, that they have 'evolved' to a perfect moral climate, which means when they do horrible things it is always 'for a good cause' and they are never wrong. But here the Union has actively done wrong and the conflict is how much longer they can tolerate being complicit with an act of barbarity. So they change, they do something which in Star Trek they wouldn't do. In Star Trek culture is supposed to be sancrosant, unchanging, so long as humans are 'perfect.' Here the humans know they are flawed, they fucked up, and now they have to either adhere to their principles or admit they don't have any, if they can allow this to continue. If this was Star Trek I don't think they'd admit to making a mistake.

I've stuck with The Orville since season one and have watched it mature into what it is today. The emotion of this season and watching the characters grow into strong people as well as a strong storyline is nothing short but amazing. We weren't sure when we first started watching, but in time we grew to love the characters and everything that goes into this show. They really do cover a lot of ground in every episode and make the show well worth watching. I really hope Seth keeps this show running for a while, because this is really something worth watching. The characters themselves are so diverse and I love it!

" let HIM stand now" notice the use of pronoun in the speech. Very Moclan dialogue since they are a prodominately male race. Also notice it is Bortus who speaks which is a male who is accusing his own species of the brutality. Very subtle, whether intentional or coincidental is for you to decide.

This season was insanely good. The way this series went from a fun space faring comedy, to sci fi drama was so cool to behold. I'm glad they didn't completely remove the comedy but it's very much subdued, that's for sure. I loved this episode. From Bortus' show of emotion to Moclus finally getting the shaft. The only thing that made me sigh was Klyden's return. It made perfect sense but still... Klyden. Ugh, he's the absolute worst. 😅

Kylden WAS the worst.....except for the smoking episode and when he and Bortus were dancing in the holo suite, bc that was hilarious. I will say at the end of this episode and the rest of the season he really did do a 180. It's easy to forget but Klyden was also born female and didn't have a say in what happened to him either. He went through all the same emotions Toppa did, but didn't know why until much later in his life. He's spent most of his life pushing these feeling down and it just left him bitter. I really hope if we get a season 4 (please give us season 4) that we see more of him dealing with his past trauma and trying to be a good partner and father to Bortus and Toppa.

My own take on the Moclans is this:- A long time ago the Moclans were 2 sexes, male and female, an advanced race came along and genetically engineered the Moclans into 1 sex with the children having a quick childhood so that they could become soldiers faster, and this other race would have a ready supply of troops, for whatever reason they didn’t or they barely got round to using the Moclans. The females who are being born is nature’s way of trying to correct what was done to the Moclans. I also reckon that the Moclan high council know this and it's why they have zero tolerance for any deviation which could spell the end of their rule. It would make for an interesting episode to show that Moclus was built on a lie.

Peter Macon is fantastic in this scene. It’s in his voice and even under all that makeup, it’s clear what he’s expressing. It’s not just the rage of a father whose child was hurt. It’s the sadness over the trauma Topa experienced, its the betrayal by his people, his helplessness in the face of being unable to prevent what happened and to make the galaxy a safe place for his daughter to live. And above it all? The guilt. The insurmountable parental guilt for failing to protect her from all of it. Peter Macon deserves an Emmy for his role as Bortus. He’s often played as a joke in many scenes, but scenes like this? In only a few lines, he evoked more emotion and sympathy than I’ve felt on TV in many years. I can only hope his talent is truly recognized.
