I see you got a new t-shirt for the occasion.👍 Nice reaction to one of the most iconic song and performance of The Elvis. The growl in his voice is something special at this time and the depth. A stunning performance that ended his 68 Comeback Show, you missed the last few seconds when he was talking. A great birthday gift for you and us watching. The Colonel wanted him to end the show with a christmas song, but Elvis insisted on doing this instead. Both Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King was shot and killed in 68. MLK was shot a couple of months before this in Memphis Elvis hometown, Elvis was very upset about this and worried about where things were going in the US. He spoke about this and they wrote the song for him to sing for his final number. Seph now you know the power hes possessing, he sings with all his body and soul straight to yours. The more you get to know about him as a person and him as the singer and entertainer the more you will love him. Following you going deeper and deeper into The Elvis is so exiting and fun, I enjoy every second. Hip Hip Hooray!!!

@@SephPlays I was just rewatching this reaction and wanted to give you a little additional background info. If you don't know who Robert Kennedy was, he was John Kennedy's brother, a presidential candidate in '68, and a huge supporter of civil rights. As for the connection between Elvis and MLK Jr., they had spoken on the phone and Elvis suppoted the civil rights movement with many donations. Elvis had a copy of MLK's "I Have a Dream" speech framed and displayed in his home. He also played the recording for people often, and his girlfriend at the time said Elvis loved reciting the speech for people. Watching this (no spoilers) will give you insight on how much performing this song meant to Elvis and will make it even more meaningful: Martin Luther King & Elvis Presley - "THEY HAD A DREAM" - (50th anniversary) 2018 (8:02).

Iconic performance by Elvis. He took his voice to new places for passionate expression. I’ve always felt his gospel influence in his delivery. First of all, Happy Birthday Seph 🎂🤗 When Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Elvis` beloved city Memphis (of all places), Elvis was so shocked and devastated that he cried in a fetal position. "If I Can Dream" is a live recording and obviously refers to MLK Jr.`s wonderful speech "I Have A Dream". But it also refers to everything that was going on in the 60s: 1. John F. Kennedy - assassinated on November 22, 1963 2. Malcolm X - assassinated on February 21, 1965 3. Martin L. King Jr - assassinated on April 4, 1968 4. Robert.F. Kennedy - assassinated on June 6, 1968 5. In addition, there was The Cold War and The Vietnam War going on. Thousands of Am. soldiers were dying in Vietnam and were brought back in caskets. 6. There were countless protests against the Vietnam War. 7. There was the constant threat of a nuclear war, and of course, there was The Cuban Crisis. 8. The Civil Rights Movement with MLK Jr., Malcolm X, and The Black Panthers. America was in turmoil and people lived in fear. Black people have lived in fear before, but now even the white society didn`t feel safe anymore. Elvis` song addresses all that. And although Colonel Parker was against this song, because he always wanted "His Golden Boy" to stay out of political content, the song became a great success. That`s when Elvis decided that from then on he would never record anything again that had no real meaning to him.

this was done live in an empty studio as the studio's punishment for him refusing to back down & sing this song in honour of dr.king & bobby kennedy.. Elvis grew up in the church & specifically in a black church that was near his home which welcomed hiim & his mother.. gospel music was his absolute favorite & he had the largest collection of gospel music in america at one time... the network was opposed to his doing this song but he had so much respect & admiration for dr. king & took inspiration from him he stood his ground & basically said no song.. no special.. the infulence of his church upbringing is so up front in this performance ( the white suit) & he literally did take us to church with this Thank you for sharing such an honest & heart touching reaction with us check out his performance of how great thou art the best video version is of him in a blue jumpsuit from 1972

Everything in this performance has a purpose. The song itself was written by Earl Brown, inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King’s speech I Have a Dream. The song was written with Elvis in mind & it’s a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Mr. Brown was aware of Elvis love for Dr. King. He also knew that Elvis was devastated by the news of Dr. King’s assassination (just 9 miles away from Graceland, Elvis‘s home). The white suit was also worn to accompany the song’s dream for better days. At the time, the conflict in Vietnam was heart wrenching. In remembrance, of the lives lost during the Vietnam war. The burgundy colored scarf Elvis wore around his neck was for them.

Elvis Presley's "IF I CAN DREAM" From his 68 Comeback Special, was Elvis' Heartfelt and Powerful Tribute to Dr Martin Luther King Jr, after his Assasination in Memphis Tennessee where Elvis Lived. It is Based on the message of MLK's "I Have A Dream" Speech, and was written for him with this in mind. It also honored the Memory of Robert F Kennedy, who was also Assasinated during the same time period. This was a Turbulent Time in America, 🇺🇸 with the Civil Rights Movement, Protests and Riots against Vietnam War and it seemed as if the Country was being torn apart and Elvis wanted to bring a Message of Hope and Unity to the Nation. "If I Can Dream" is at it's heart, a Civil Rights Song.

So, I saw your reaction to "If I Can Dream" Seph and it was exactly the reaction I had, first time hearing. I didn't cry. What I felt was hope. And since I lived thru the strife & violence of the sixties, I also felt some anger & sadness that such a song needed to be sung. As a little girl, I recall a feeling of fear & terror on one notable day; a day me & my family made a rare trip out of the suburbs of Baltimore (Maryland) into the City. The US was seeing riots and fires in many cities across the land over the senseless killing of a great man: a man of peace, of God, of Love; Martin Luther King Jr. MLK had been struck down in Memphis Tennessee April 4 and rioting was erupting in cities across the US. In parts of the city our black brothers & sisters were experiencing events on a far different level. They were angry. They were grief-stricken. They were crushed this esteemed man who advocated for equality & justice had been taken. Two days after MLK's assassination, television News showed cars on fire and City blocks on fire; thousands of people out in the streets going crazy and a huge local police presence assisted by thousands of Federal troops sent in by then president Lyndon B Johnson to quell the violence. As a young girl, I didn't have a full grasp of the happenings of the day but I DID know tensions were high, violence was erupting and I was scared. It was surreal, sitting in the back seat listening to Motown and seeing the black smoke rising in distant parts of the City. Mom bought our Easter delicacies and we returned home with no one worse for the wear. That ride, the music, the sights & the sounds of the day all rush back any time I think of it. What became known as 'the Baltimore Riot of 1968' was one of the three biggest disturbances arising out of that period of immense civil unrest of the times. King died April 4. Reactions remained peaceful until late afternoon April 6, when at the end of a Memorial Service someone threw rocks into retail windows. That set off eight days of violence in Baltimore alone. A hundred other US cities also experienced similar but smaller riots. ~~~~~~~~ from Wikipedia - "The Baltimore riot of 1968 was a period of civil unrest that lasted from April 6 to April 14, 1968, in Baltimore. The uprising included crowds filling the streets, burning and looting local businesses, and confronting the police and national guard. Over 11, 500 members of local & Federal law enforcement officers & soldiers converged on the City to maintain order. In the next few days, 6 people died, 700 were injured, and 5,800 were arrested. 1,000 small businesses were damaged or robbed. Property damages, assessed financially, were more severe in DC ($15 million), Baltimore ($12 million), and Chicago ($10 million) than in any other cities. "Rioters set more than 1,200 fires during the disturbance. Damage was estimated at over $12 million (equivalent to $77.5 million today). Of the arrests, 3,488 were for curfew violations, 955 for burglary, 665 for looting, 391 for assault, and 5 for arson." Only two months later, another leader among men, ardent champion of Civil Rights Robert F Kennedy would die of an assassin's bullet on June 6, 1968. This magnificent song, written expressly for Elvis to sing on his television broadcast, was to embody all the man was feeling in his heart and all an unsettled Nation were feeling as well; in effort to comfort, console and encourage Hope for the day when "all our brothers walk hand in hand". 🕊✌☮

This song, this performance are amazing, and for me Elvis never looked better, i grew up with his music but have discovered a new appreciation for it now in my late 40’s. I always loved his music but never fully appreciated just how good he really was until more recently and i love watching younger people react to his performances.

I'm watching this again and I'm reminded of when I watched this show on live TV. I (and I imagine many others) was absolutely stunned when he sang this song. All the songs in the 68 Special were stunning and I imagine many people who really listened to him for the first time, really, really listened, discovered how very good he was.

@@SephPlays I understand that. That was a hard time in America. I was 13 when JFK was assassinated and I dearly loved him. Then 1968, April, Martin Luther King Jr. murdered and beginning of June RFK was murdered. Elvis had a lot of respect especially for Martin Luther King Jr. and it hurt that it happened in Memphis, not so far from his home. Then we had men spilling their blood in Vietnam. I read an article that said, I think, Binder, not sure, went out and bought the red scarf to signify the blood shed weekly in Vietnam. You know that song, If I Can Dream was written rather quickly. Amazingly.

First of all Happy birthday Seph hope you have a great day😂. I remember watching this in a movie house , in 1968 There was absolute silence. Until he said, thank you and Good Night. Then all you could hear was at least 5oo people singing if i could dream . I have played this song at least once a week ever since that night and it still has the same reaction as it did then for me . The Elvis star 🌟 Shines The brightest ✨️ to show each and everyone of us The way to The promise land. Happy birthday! Great reaction to a powerful song. Gives me goosebumps too. The song was written in response and tribute after MLK and Bobby Kennedy were assassinated-but it is hopeful. He really sings his heart out in this one. It was the closing song to his Comeback special. First concert after all the movies I believe. Restarted his singing career. He only wanted to sing songs he believed in after this!!

Elvis had a real rasp/cry in his voice in 68/69. If Elvis had been allowed to sing the type of songs he ‘felt’ (or more to the point), if he had taken charge of the direction of his career, just imagine the possibilities, One thing for sure, he would have done a lot more gospel. Seth, you’re probably aware of the story of this performance and the black leather performance of this song. However I will include it here. This is the explanation from Shane Brown, author of Reconsider Baby, Elvis, A Listeners Guide… “On June 23rd, Elvis recorded If I Can Dream in the studio for use in the TV special. That version is heard on the original single and original LP. On June 29th, Elvis did the stand-up black leather shows, where he lip-synced to the studio recording. On June 30th, they taped the white suit performance. It was intended to be a lip-sync again, but Elvis decided to sing his vocal live over the original backing track. That version was used for the TV show. They took the "thank you, goodnight" comment from that version, and tacked it on to the end of the studio version from June 23 when that was issued on the LP.”
