To listen to the cosmos as an audiobook: story.tel/baris-ozcan-kozmos Free for the first 14 days at Storytel (collaboration) - If you were to go to a deserted island, which 3 books would you take with you? The first two books in my answer to this question have been changing for years, but the third one has been the same for the last 40 years: Cosmos. If you're going somewhere, isn't it very sensible to take the whole universe with you? This book really contains a lot of things about the universe and the order in it. It explains complex concepts that are difficult to explain in a very simple manner as if a friend of yours is chatting with you. But do not let the name fool you, this book is not just about space and astronomy. It has a wide range of subjects such as philosophy, history, biology, and chemistry. It even has an apple cake recipe in it. And no, I am not kidding.
What is needed to make an apple cake? Some flour, a few apples, a little this, and that, and the heat from the oven… The contents of the apple cake are made up of molecules, like sugar and water. Molecules are also made up of atoms, such as carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen. So where do these atoms come from then? All but hydrogen are produced in stars. So a star is like a cosmic kitchen where hydrogen atoms are converted into heavier atoms.
Look, we started with the apple cake, went up to the stars in a few seconds, and made it look like the kitchen we use daily at home. And doing all these, we put atoms and molecules, which are the most basic concepts of chemistry, into place. This is how a person should exercise not only his intelligence but also his imagination. This book and its author, Carl Sagan teach us to think and to look in that way. Because only then the “order in the universe”-which is the true meaning of the cosmos by the way-becomes much more inspiring. As I keep holding this you wonder when I am going to eat it right? Not quite yet!.
We just said that everything except hydrogen is produced in stars. Then where are the stars manufactured? They are formed by the condensation of gas and dust in the vacuum of space. That gas and dust are also mostly Hydrogen. This Hydrogen is weird. It is the number 1 atom. The most abundant element in the universe. It makes up 75% of it. But Hydrogen is not produced in stars. It occurred billions of years ago with the Big Bang that started the Cosmos.
This means that they are at the very foundation of everything we see, use, eat and drink in the universe. When we say Made in Turkey, Made in China, we are misspeaking. In fact, all atoms except Hydrogen are “made in stars” and Hydrogen is “made in the big bang”. After these interim explanations, let's get back to our apple cake. We made this, didn't we? We've just counted the materials. We didn't actually make it, we just combined the materials. It says in Cosmos: If you want to make an apple cake from scratch, you first of all have to invent the universe.
Негізгі бет If I could only read one book on science, it would be; Cosmos.
