I remember this girl came to a traditional dance class, and she asked if she could do Bharatha Natyam without the “Hindu Gods” The teacher told her “this is our ancient temple dance..please go do Bollywood” The problem with taking a universal approach, is it doesn’t understand that the other side often has mal intent and will start doing “Jesus Bharatha Natyam” which is already being done and this kind of appropriation is often the first step towards conversion and ultimately destruction of the indigenous culture. So a different perspective would be that if you want to do Indian classical temple dance, anyone is welcome to do it, but do it with the spirit of Indian/Hindu/dharmic Bhakti which is intrinsic to the art. Please please please read “Being Different” by Rajiv Malhotra

Yes, I was thinking of the same. Sanatana dharma doesn’t mean free for all to do whatever one wants. There are basics one has to subscribe to. Karma and karma phalans, reincarnation for example. If you don’t subscribe to this, you can not call yourself as Sanatani.

@@Dharmicaction They are not separate from each other as ours is a holistic science. One who is versed in Sankhya can imbibe Bhakti at some point, true. But the reverse can also be true (Bhakti to Sankhya). Whether you start with Yoga or Vedanta or Bhakti or Advaita or Sankhya or any other facet of Sanatana Hindu Dharma, we will eventually have to start letting go of our personal limitations/ opinions/ perceptions, and align with the entire Cosmic science described in our Vedas. And in this process, we will eventually have to discover/ master all other dimensions of the Vedic tradition. Only this can give us a complete and holistic experience.

Hanuman saved my soul. I have wayward faith, but i hold Hindu beliefs close to heart over western christ faith. I studied some Odyssi dance, few classes... learned to chant hanuman chalisa and how to play harmonium and drum. Very full of faith, just very distrusting of any other person telling me with ego how to pray, who to be, how to chant. God for me is in the wind, on tree tops, inside flowers, in every grain of sand. I appreciate and do work with the soil, i grow food from seed, i raise animals. There is little time in the day for this hard discipline of faith. I let it flow, I let it come and I let it go. I wish you all the best beautiful Ma. I wish you could dance around the states. We need many prayers of all kinds over here. All of humanity does. Bless you and your kindness in sharing your perspectives with us. I like these discussions. Ram Ram. Namaste. 🌈💗🐵🌻🙏🏽🙏🏾🙏🏿🙏🙏🏻👍🏽

i'm jewish and it took me a long time to properly understand Sanatana dharma even though i was always drawn to it... let me just say there are a lot of similarities between the religions that have somehow been hidden away by modern & historical cultural biases, not to mention centuries of war & diaspora. According to me, one example of similarities would be the term "Yeshiva" which in Judaism is bible study and spiritual learning for youth, but the direct translation from Jewish to English of "Yeshiva" is "an act of sitting" implying study & learning ... much like Lord Shiva sits in meditation... anyway, it's a really vast subject and you are right about the inclusiveness of it, i wish more people understood it like that! thanks!

I am a Sikh and I have learned odissi since I was a child. I know that the dance is a form to worship Lord Jagganath and truly I am okay with it. If it's a temple dance like bharatnatyam or odissi or basically any other dance which requires to understand that it's a form of worship to any specific god ,you respect it and accept it and do your best. It doesn't make a non Sikh or a hindu. You respect why the dance was formed and you perform your best by understanding it's value.

I have only recently begun to learn about Vedic thinking, but it encapsulates so well what I have always known to be true. It is not about believing in the "right" god in the "right" way, but appreciating and respecting the sanctity of all beings, and being humble to nature's wisdom. I feel like this is a thread shared by many old ways of thinking in many cultures all around the world, most of which have died out. Vedic philosophy is the strongest torchbearer today. I feel like this thinking is our only hope of learning to truly respect the earth and treating all her inhabitants with dignity.

Indian classical art forms are like a pristine stream flowing down through centuries. The partaker of this beauty, the artist must remember not to pollute the stream while drawing from it. Contemporary artists can do their individual expressions on a copy of this template. Don't reduce these art forms into ludicrous exercises in secularism. Christianity and Islam have now spread to all remote corners of the world. Very few indigenous art forms have survived their overzealous approach. Let us not allow this to happen in India, a treasure trove of art.

Arts are in fact, above the nuances of religion!! They transcend the cultures, borders, attitudes, what not!! Zakir Hussein prays to Saraswati, though being a Muslim. KJ Yesudas, who comfortably gave concerts in Carnatic style music and sang numerous songs on Hindu Gods & Goddesses. There are many artists in Europe and US who paint Hindu Gods, as are numerous artists in India who paint Gods of other religions. Just because I venerate the statue of Pieta doesn't make me anti Hindu!! Everyone has their way of representing the ONE. All of them should be respected equally. But unlike other arts, since music and dance are deeply rooted in our tradition and way of living which encompasses reverence to everything, disconnecting that link might make the art form lifeless

Anyone can practice Bharatanatyam, true. But will the intention of one visualizing Ma Saraswati, and another intentionally replacing Ma Saraswati, be the same? NO! While all our Gods are indeed all-inclusive and universal, to pretend they are replaceable or interchangeable is not right. As an acharya, you may not turn away a nonHindu student. But it is also your svadharma to give them the right understanding, and help them overcome any resistance to our Gods/ Goddesses/ Dharma. Of course, they do not have to convert. But what you are saying will only strengthen their resistance to our Gods & Goddesses, even as they take the best elements of our Dharma given by the same Gods & Goddesses! There is a Cosmic reason we bow down to Sri Nataraja before we start a dance, so HIS grace and intelligence flows through us. Replacing this with a biological mother or father's photo may be sentimental, but it is not the same at all! Then there is this matter of distancing religion from spirituality - which are 2 sides of the same coin in our Vedic tradition. What you are saying is akin to a student learning everything from Radha Kalpa, and then attributing it to Begum Bazar foundation down the line, because the intelligence of dance is non-dual and all pervasive you see!! There has been tremendous sacrifice by our ancestors to protect this Vedic ecosystem. Unfortunately, influential Hindus today are peddling personal opinions over Vedic references. There is NO Vedic reference which says it is okay to replace Ma Saraswati or Nataraja in Bharatnatyam. Please become aware of JesusYoga, IslamYoga, HolyYoga and their like, and how nonHindus use statements like what you've made to convert Hindus to other religions. Hindus cannot afford to be tone deaf any more.

I am not sure you fully understand what I said. If one understands the philosophy no replacing is necessary due to an emotional attachment to another figure. Nothing can be replaced ultimately. Thats the whole point. :-) Please listen again and see if I have ever said that one can replace from a place of rejecting "nataraja" or "saraswati". I have only said that the philosophy allows one to include reverence to anything and everything.... so create as many gods you like, because they are ultimately the same.

@@dancerukmini My dearest Rukmani, sorry, but you're being tone deaf dear. All our Gods (ishvara) are from the same source (isha), but they are NOT the same. You cannot have Paramashiva sit in place of Sri Rama, and still call it Sita Kalyanam. Now authentic Hindus will not even attempt this, coz we have the ability to love, respect and revere multiple Gods, without fighting for individual supremacy or breakdown of Agamic traditions. But if you're including a nonHindu audience - typically monothiests - they are more likely to interpret this as, "I can replace this Hindu idol with MY God, coz all Gods are the same". I am not making this up. This is the unfortunate reality that has led to widespread conversion and mass Hindu genocide. So Hindus with influence, have to take responsibility for the messaging we put out during these sensitive times! I LOVE your dance videos. But perhaps in this series, you are not aware of the ground reality, and hence not prepared. Depending on where each individual is in their journey, we pick up our svadharma. @@maaruna9533 Yes. Modern hindu gurus who say yoga is not hindu to expand their followers are not helping either. it only leads to digestion of yoga (as some kind of Breathing or physical exercise) in a half baked manner (which is already happening). But having said that, if a dharmic person understands the well validated Vedic metaphysics Sankhya, different yoga/tantra techniques then "in private" he or she can focus on any external form or one's true conscious self (athma) and use breath control or sanskrit mantra (like the powerful Mahamrityunjaya mantra) to transcend the 5 senses and reach turiya or samadhi which can be momentary (temple tradition), temporary and permanent (yoga and tantra tradition). All hindu deities in temples are cosmic allegories for nature, laws of nature and Vedic metaphysics. They are also objects of attraction (so bathed, given food and dressed up) for focus and meditation to reach momentary samadhi states to remove karma. Point is both knowledge and experience are important in hindu/dharma. Experience without correct knowledge is like a blind man and it leads to wrong conclusions like Buddhist "Nirvana". On the left I see the sci-fi movie I m going to see the next afternoon. Them I see twilight blue sky. The passive fertile presence. Then I see Quan Yen Life size white green jade. She is angry. She is angry about the situation on Earth. I just didn't understand about going down the throat of the cobra. Its not a question of religion or dance. I didn't understand why its called that. Thanks

The never ending arguments on, who's God is the real God, and the various religion's insisting that their God, is the only God in my opinion, is the epitome of utmost ignorance, blindness and arrogance. As Swamiji Nithyananda had explained, rather than bickering who's God is the only God, the "consciousness of being in oneness with God", itself is most important. I strongly resonate with my seeking, that l can be in oneness with the Universe, oneness with the Forest, oneness with the Mountains, oneness with the Ocean, so why can't we be in oneness with cultural dancing?

Sri Krishna in Bhagavadh Gita said, If you assume a particular thing or object as God, eventhough it is not a god , the thing which you assume as God, derives the real power of God. If you assume pen, book etc.etc as God it possesses the power of God. It's all depends on how you believe. .

That's exactly what Sanatana Dharma is NOT. It's about inclusion and assimilation. Not about, this is who we are, accept or leave. It's for everyone/everything, of everyone/everything and by everyone/everything. At least that's what I got from what she said

I for one enjoys Bharatanatya, but don''t believe in a God external to me. I believe my morality is my God. That's the form I have given. I consider myself a Hindu, despite not believing in any of the rituals or tropes. Someone believing in rituals or tropes is also fine. It is beyond definition, fluid, it can take any or all forms. It's everything

@@songmalu i appreciate your view...but this large heartedness is the reason why in certain places surya namaskar is being taught as jesus namaskar...clipping it off its hindu root totally. This is why in middle east there is rise of muslim yoga where instead of Om, they chant bismillah or something... This liberal attitude is why our traditions are slowly taken, absorbed, digested and then presented as if they already had it originally. Lofty ideals are good but being blind to what sinister plots are played out against our civilization is foolishness.

@@songmalu In essence i do agree with what you are saying. That is assuming the "Others" are coming with the same intention/core concept of openness. The fact is people who have a problem with hindu(Sanatan Dharma) concepts and are vehemently against it. i.e. hinduism is evil, idolatry, it is false, my religion is true, you will go to hell. How can you 'not' agree with an open concept as described in the video, and then appropriate Indian tradition. So then they appropriate Indian traditions cutting parts they hate/canonically disagree with? That is not inclusive (as it should be), its exclusive (what the reality is). If there is christian yoga, or muslim yoga, its not because they are open to the religion angle, or agnostic towards it, It is because they find it troublesome. I've heard christian yoga teachers on youtube say Om is troublesome coz it yolks to you to a "false" god. Same with islam. So, if your intention are right and you are christian/muslim then what is the need to appropriate or remove anything. You practice the tradition, it's that simple. I think Sermons of inclusiveness resonate well, only when the OTHERS are open to it. You can come with a knife in a gun fight.

Giving “Sarasvati any form.” Is an irresponsible statement. Tomorrow Mary Magdalene can be imagined as Sarasvati, and there you have it, the capture of Bharatanatyam has begun. It DOES matter Rukminiji. PS: advaita vedanta is only one stream of Vedic thought.

@@dancerukmini the difference is that in dharma you can worship Jesus and part take in their religious dances/ceremonies and you will still be okay in God's eyes however in abhrahimic traditions even part taking in something as minute as tarot reading or psychics or even entertaining polytheism can be considered blasphemous and depending of the churches and mosques or even sects of temples your membership will be revoked.

There is thing called cultural appropriation that is what is happening to bharat natayam in the form of Christian Bharat natayam. Our ancestors fought against such conversions n here people are giving free run for such missionary elements. All religions are not the same. If they are same then why would they exist. Have u study the abrahamic religion only then u can make such general statement. Atleast practitioner are supposed to be the protector of the tradition but here u r giving direct invitation to culture appropriation. For u kind info Christmas used to be a pagan festival in Europe now people associate it with christian n noone knows about its pagan roots. Christianity had eliminated the pagan religion in whole Europe n America.

Adam is synonymous with the human totality collected (synthesized or unify) in an individuality (a soul) that represents the unity and the totality of the human. The different human beings, the different peoples, the different cultures and the different social and cultural possibilities for human beings have their origin in that basic and total unit that is Human Nature (Adam). Adam, the first complete human, was a historical reality and is an archetypal reality in the present and in the future (as were Rama, Krishna, Buddha, and Jesus the Christ). We are all called to achieve the lost Unity. The absolute essence (the Self, Brahman-Atman) is beyond the One. It is inexpressible. Ishvara (Unity consciousness) and Multiplicity are expressions (manifestation) that occur in the Absolute Consciousness. It is a joy for us, human beings, to be able to enjoy such a beautiful art (the classical dance of India) aimed at enriching ourselves and nourishing ourselves with the most sublime of that millenary culture that has paid tribute to the Divine and to what is beyond of Divinity (Nirguna Brahman). If our hearts are oriented towards Unity and what is beyond Unity, we will be able to understand that the diversity is part of our own essence, and we will able to value, love and appreciate it. Mrs. Rukmini thank you for your very beautiful and interesting videos. Excuse me for an English that I don't know how to handle. May GOD bless you always. _/\ _
