I've had this snap on me twice, so from experience I tell you it will start and run but you will need to watch the heat gauge like a hawk and stop when it starts getting near the red, at which point you must turn the engine off or you'll screw it more. You can only start the engine so many times before the battery is out of charge. You literally need to head straight for home or straight to the closest mechanic

The biggest thing it will overheat in about 1 through 2 minutes depending on how cold it is outside. because the water pumps not turning, coolant is not flowing through the radiator and the motor, the battery will be going down and no power steering. The worst thing that could happen the big repair is blown head gaskets and crackheads at the worst you may need another motor and a battery. Or if you don't have the money go to a car lot and make payments. and start all over with a Mystery Machine. The car lot man says: just a little old lady drove it to and from church.

My 2006 Rav4 diesel broke the serpentine belt 1 week after I had gotten it with 140.000 miles. I thought the air conditioner broke so I drove off to fix that. 5 miles and half an hour later in scorching July heat I noticed the engine temperature dial had moved beyond Max. I left the engine to cool down for a while and drove off a few hundred yards/meters to the nearest service. Coolant had exploded all over the engine bay through the pressure valve. A few thousand miles later I did an oil change, and 6.000 miles to the next oil change it hadn't burnt a single ounce of oil or lost coolant. All this on an engine known for leaking and blowing head gaskets.

@dr.fillyblunt7505

It really depends on the car/engine. If it's the accessory/serpentine belt you'll lose charging from alternator and AC most likely. If your car's water pump is driven by this belt your engine could overheat, I own a car with the water pump driven directly by the timing chain behind the timing cover. If your power steering is mechanical you'll lose it, probably not though if it's electric. If it's not the accessory/serpentine belt and it's the timing belt it could destroy the engine if it's an interference engine and it broke while you were driving. Non interference engine it will likely throw it way out of timing but if it gets out of timing enough it will simply stop running or won't run correctly until it's fixed. It's usually okay to run with a broken accessory belt in an emergency situation given you can get home reasonably quickly, given the clock is ticking on your battery because nothing is charging and you might not have power steering. If the water pump is involved I wouldn't even risk it at all tbh. I'd also advise not risking it at all if the timing belt broke.

Al Grayson yeah but again, someone who is conscientious about watching their gauges will be able to see when their car is starting to get hotter than normal. I’ve had quite a few customers blow belts, and almost immediately shut the car off only to get it towed to me with no excess damage. What I see more commonly being in the shop I’m in are cars with 200-300,000+ miles that have all had their water pumps replaced within the last year, but their batteries are 7,8,9+ years old. So something like this causes their car to die faster than it could even overheat, and then they assume it’s something way bigger than it is. I understand that’s not every shop, and I totally agree with what you’re saying, Especially because I had a Jeep with warped heads due to this very issue not two weeks ago. But just knowing my customer base, and who I’m working with, that’s where my mind goes

Lose your AC, Lose your power steering, Lose charge to your battery, Lose your water pump. You have about 20-30 minutes of driving you can do before the car starts to get too hot, and or the battery dies on you. But the car will run.. it’s an accessory belt to run the accessories. It’s not gonna keep your engine from turning over..

Older cars of course will start and run, only they will overheat, but more modern cars that have starter motor and alternator as one unit won't because the belt is what starts the car (unless you push start it or something idk)

If my belt broke, I would cut it shorter and try to duck tape it and save only the Water Pump, that way I can prolong the driving. You can get away with a lot of stuff, like...., alternator, power steering pump, AC, etc....., but can't get away from the Water Pump since it's a Vital Component for the Engine.

Of course it will. You just won't be able to charge the battery or in many cases cool the engine. It'll definitely run for awhile though if you have a full battery and if your pump runs off the timing belt or timing chain you could probably get two hours out of it before the battery dies.

He's right, eventually the engine will overheat because the water pump pulley is not turning...but should have time to get off the road and maybe home if it's not too far (keep an eye on temperature gauge)...just be ready for a lot of hard turning on the steering wheel...the power steering pump pulley also is not turning :(

My van snapped the belt and I drove it about 50 miles after to try to get it to my parents house because I was way to far away from my house. I got about 5 minutes from there house and hit traffic then it started overheating, if I had clear road I would have made it.

@INKEDCREATIONS

@@jonathanruiz1543 it was a big ford econoline van with a huge radiator, as long as you keep air flowing through the radiator it stayed cool, that's why when I hit traffic it started boiling and I had to find a place to pull over and by that time the battery was super low so the ignition coil was having a hard time energizing. I ended up taking a brand new battery over to where I parked it when there was no traffic and finished driving it to my parents. I let turned out the reason the belt snapped is because the power steering pump locked up.

It depends on which car a broken serpentine belt happens. Some (like mine) only rides the AC compressor and the alternator. So when that happened to my car, i still drove for 8 km without any problem. I had no AC obviously and the battery light came on. Obviously if the serpentine rides your water pump and power steering pump, then its much worse, your car will overheat and u wil barely be able to turn the car...But you can still drive!

Belt broke in my mercury sable because the ac compressor siezed up. No power steering. Temperature guage starting rising and the alternator was no longer charging the battery. Everything dimmed and the battery light came on. I was going to work that morning when it happened. Luckily I was down the street from my house. And was able to turn around and park the car at home. Temperature guage just reached the H as soon as I parked the car. Then immediately shut it off.

PLEASE HELP. (2008 Pontiac G6) So we were driving home yesterday and we were exiting off the highway, my girlfriends steering wheel lost Power Steering, her lights turned off, and the car came to a stop. We thought we just needed a jump bc 30m prior, her battery light came on. So we called a friend and got a jump. it worked for about 2mins, then she tried to flip her lights on and the car completely shut off and made like a.. rope with a lot of tension snap noise, it was kinda loud. Her dad says it’s probably the serpentine belt, after watching many different things i’m coming to think otherwise. Any pointers, or thoughts?
