Conceptualized in the 1940s and created / used during the 1950s, the F-89 Scorpion was a US all-weather jet interceptor. The Scorpion, designed by Northrop Grumman, first flew in 1948. Early versions experienced considerable issues. Most notably, they had severe issues with aerodynamics and engine performance. Eventually these issues were ironed out with later variants like the F-89D. The F-89D was armed entirely with air to air rockets, and would eventually be used to test guided air to air missiles. As newer jet interceptors became available, F-89s were transferred to air national guard units where they were used in service until 1969.
