The Leopard 1 was originally designed as Germany's entry into the Europanzer competition, with France's entry being what would become the AMX-30. Though the Leopard was notably superior in most aspects, both countries decided to build their respective main battle tanks instead of adopting just one. The Leopard 1 entered full scale production in 1965 and was noted for being reliable, mobile, and easy to maintain. After the MBT-70 program fell through, Germany used what they had learned from it to create a new main battle tank, the Leopard 2. Though some early versions of the Leopard 2 lacked critical features and had some teething issues, the Leopard 2 has also earned a reputation for being extremely reliable.
