Many of these are still salvageable. With gloves, get the rotted goo out of it, and trim off ALL of the rot. You may even have to wash it. In a pot that is ONLY a couple inches bigger than your salvaged piece, repot the rootless top of the cactus in new cactus medium, and water as you normally SHOULD. Set it aside for a couple weeks, and see if there is new root growth. You’ll have to baby it for a while, but you’d be surprised what can be salvaged. 🌵♥️

Just a little tip, if you own cactus or succulents, they will tell you when they need water. Just give them a light squeeze or gently prod it with something, and if it feels a little soft, then it needs a good deep water about once or twice a month. Bottom watering is also a good way to help protect against over watering any potted plant. It can also reduce the risk of pests. This can also be a signs of fungus gnats, whose larvae eat the roots of plants and prevent them from absorbing water, leading to rot.

What yall do to your poor plants? I once saw a broken branch from one of my mom's wild plants and felt sorry for it, it was just a tiny branch with a single leaf lol. Nvm I asked what plant it was, she didn't know much but I got some info from internet, I'm 90% sure it was a portulacaria afra, i didn't know how to revive it and where to plant it so here's what I did: 1. Put the branch on a cup with water for some days, changed water when it seemed dirty. It thankfully grew a tiny root extension where it was broken. 2. Bought a plastic pot however damn I'm poor af and wasn't not going to buy special dirt for it, neither a "substrate", it was pandemic, didn't have the money nor the knowledge or accessibility etc, also I wanted to do it myself so, got some dirt, I filter it (maybe a bit too much 'cause it almost ended up as sand instead of dirt…) and put it under the sun and its high UV light, that way it got rid of most insects (sorry I don't like them that much and didn't want to deal with them inside my room). I read it needed to retain water so I looked for the most porous rock I could find and went unga bunga with it to get tinier pieces, that way my failed dirt wasn't as much sandy as I made it be. 3. Put the branch with its tiny root in the pot the dirt and rocks, supported by a stick to compensate its single root. I left it outside during the day and under indirect sun as I wasn't quite sure if it needed that much. I just watered like each week or when by poking the dirt seemed dry. 3. Enjoy my plant, it grew more leaves, more branches and ended growing like a thin long spiral branch witn more branches and lot of leaves (was expecting it to be more tiny and bushy but oh well). It was a nice experience however I discovered those plants can reproduce asexually and felt betrayed I just had a copy of the wild one. Nonetheless it's a good plant, I gave it as a gift to my big sister who wanted an inside tiny plant, I just hope she keeps it well like, how could you kill it unintentionally?

Yeah. Rotten makes more sense than "melting". Plants don't melt. I do know that cactus will rot when they get watered too much. The thing about adaptations in nature is that they often come with negative side effects. If something is extra good at something, they are going to be weaker in something else. So if a cactus is adapted to a dry climate, it won't do so well in a wet climate. The most humane way to water a cactus is to water it only a little bit. That is what it is adapted for. I do like the tip at the end of the video to do research. That is a good thing to to for any plant or animal one takes care of. Ideally one should do their homework before getting the thing. Then they can figure out whether they are ready to take on the responsibility. There are other examples of tradeoffs. Cheetahs are the fastest land animals. However they don't have the physical strength to fight back. So competitors steal their food a lot. Extremophiles can't survive under normal environmental conditions. Humans are super smart. However they are very much lacking in physical strength and speed. Humans can also get cancer. Having multiple cells and a complex body helps an organism work efficiently at a large size. That has multiple benefits and opens up new niches. However that structure requires tight regulation on how the different cells in the body divide. If the regulation stops working, there would be too much of a given cell type. That plagued the whole body, and the condition is called cancer. Single celled organisms are essentially immune to cancer. Since they have a simple body, they don't need special regulations. Too much cell division can lead to overcrowding. It is still a different problem than cancer.

I am certainly not an avid cactus keeper, but I suspect that if your pot has good enough drainage and the soil is sandy enough it should be virtually impossible to overwater your cactus.

As someone who has always lived in deserts - pretend like your cacti and succulents don't exist. Make sure they have light and fresh air and give them a very, VERY quick rinse with water once a week or less depending on their age.

Also research what type of substrate it needs. That will also help it not rot.

I neglect the hell out of plants. I have a few struggling succulents and one cactus that is THRIVING. It loves my neglect. Cacti are for people who forget they have plants.

I've had succulents/cacti for 10 years. No idea what they are, but I water them once a month. Only one cactus melted, but that was in the first month.
