Stephen, I converted a full kit by Sound Percussion into shallow shells just for a practice kit. I got the idea from a set of Ludwigs I played in a church back in the 90’s. The toms were 5” deep and it had three toms mounted on the kick drum like a triangle. The 8” Tom was on top between the 10” & 12” toms, the kick was a 22x12 or 14”. I think the kit was from the 60’s or70’s. They sounded awesome! I tried to look the up online and haven’t had any luck finding them!

I once took the drummer of my band to a shop in Antwerp called "Strings and Things" and they had this HUGE drum department full of Vintage kits, which included turn of the century kits some with oblong shaped kick drums. But they also had a full Staccato kit. My buddy asked if he could have a go and was told "Sure thing" ...How should I describe the sound of those drums? "Instant Phil Collins." it just nailed that wallop and cannon shot sound he was known for and boy were they ever LOUD!

@@StephenTaylorDrums yeah, the flip side of that is they did not have a "traditional" sound to them. A lot of drummers couldn't get past that, even though when they would hear them, before seeing them, they liked the way they sounded. Single head drums are a devisive subject to begin with, then add the fact that they were fiberglass, or something like that, instead of wood. I loved them personally, and people's eyes would always pop out when they first saw them. And you rarely had to mic them, as they were indeed very loud if you wanted them to be. They actually forced the drummer to learn dynamics.
