If warpage is severe u can cut a few spot welds and reweld to pull tight no need to cut everything.

@@igazsag4839 the torch is probably an oxy acetylene torch, and the hammer is a ball peen hammer. Both would be available from most welding stores. That kind of torch is overkill if you only need to fix a wire like this, though. Get a propylene torch that can run inverted, and hold it for a second longer per spot. That's a much cheaper (and safer) way to get started.

Consider not welding one after another in a row. Jump around while welding and dont let it get to hot. You will notice a big difference.

Heat it orange(not yellow or white) hot. Hit it with a little spray of water. It will shrink up just a little and pull everything tight. Ive been to a 2 week course on flame straightening/ heat shrinking.

True but isn't it better to properly heat the metal to bend and shorten the length of the wire?? These bends are like an upside-down recurve and probably have more structural integrity than spraying it with water.

I feel like that probably works, but my brain says heating the wire causes it to expand, so the only contaction/shrinkage your going to get from splashing it with water is taking out the expansion you cause by heating... maybe im wrong though

Just don't weld them ALL in one go, do half, come back in 5 minutes do the rest, or jump around to every third or fourth one until you go around. Guarantee it'll be 10x better.

The ones that you gotta watch out for are the acid blobs from exploding car batteries.. that one should have blinded me, good thing i had a hose nearby. yeah, and it would continue to be tense even in hot days. other trick is just that: how do you manage railroad to no thermally expand and deform? you install them in the hottest day possible. any colder day will make the thing get tensioned, assuring straightness and even less tendency to elastically "bend".

It'd be different if he was cutting with the oxy acetylene but just running the oxy acetylene is basically similar pressure as the lowest psi you'll ever get out of an air compressor it will just push any particles away from you if you have any metal shavings or anything on your bench so there is never going to be anything coming back at you doing this.

You could tack one or even two adjacent sides and then hang weights at even intervals (every gap to every 3-4 gaps). You will still often need to make adjustments. It also doesn't always work well if the weld can't be placed at least in part on the top or outside face of the frame.

Yeah, whatever you weld will shrink. Put mesh on last to minimize the slack. Also, metal will shrink in the direction it was welded. Just a few thoughts of mine for what it’s worth.

It's just an oxyacetylene flame, you won't get flash burns from that. You will get a bit blinded by the light, so if you're using it for a long time a shade 5 will do good.

@@villagemagician1320even looking into a campfire long enough causes damage to the eye. a cutting torch gets way hotter than most campfires. It's safety standard to wear a shade 5 when using cutting torches and at least a shade 10-12 for basic welding applications. Higher values are recommended with higher amperages and heat. The best place to look for this sort of eye damage is Japanese smelters that still use the old school 3 story clay ovens to smelt their metals. steel glows different shades at different heats. The smelters used there eyes to determine the temp... Almost all of them go blind.

Or take a pair of pliers and put a 1/4 turn in some of the wires around the edge. Used to do this to tighten up woven wire fences.

Done this many times as a welder on guardrails. We instead heat the entire perimeter orange hot(don’t allow for bubbles) and let it cool. We did it this way to avoid hammering on an otherwise laminar mesh. The edges with welds were also covered by flatbar

Instead of flattening the heated bar. Take a two tooth hook (can be the nail pulling claw from a hammer) and make a small kink in each bar around the perimeter.

Use a modified clamp or big channel locks to grab your frame and grab the wire. After you tack up one end/side, move the opposite end/side and pull the wire tight as you tack. Repeat for the other ends/sides. I've used this technique withe wire mesh and expanded metal in the same manner.

I just weld in crosses, going from one corner to the other. Its a bit annoying but this flexes everything in a more predictable way that you can fix by just laying some beads on the other side and then grinding them down.
