1:51 AM - #IFD Firefighters responded to 3810 E Southport for a reported building fire after multiple calls to 911 reported flames coming from the rear of the structure. First arriving crews found heavy fire and smoke coming from a 40 x 40 storage area on the northwest side of the building that communicated to the interior. Command ordered a second alarm for the 9800 square foot single story structure.
Firefighters faced extinguishment issues with the rubber membrane roof, low water pressure due to the heavy draw on the system, full collapse of the storage area and large air conditioning units - threatening to fall. No firefighter injuries. 1 member of the IFD Rehab Support Unit was transported by IEMS to St. Francis South for possible back strain. The fire was brought under control within an hour but firefighters continued to hit hot spots on the roof and throughout the structure for several more hours. Command was terminated shortly after 6:00 AM.
