Sean McColl saved the entirety of the announcing. The british guy kept mixing up Fuji and Jongwon, he also referred to them as just "the asians" when they got their first looks at the problems. Overall his announcing was rather useless. So thank you Sean for having the humility to provide amazing commentary about all your competitors when you didn't have the best day

+littlelionmanJ >he also referred to them as just "the asians" Yeah, they referred to the french climbers as "the french" too but I don't see you whining about that. Stop trying to make everyone out to be racist. In competitions with foreign athletes, announcers will very often use "the brits", "the americans", etc. to describe groups of people...

Female 1.. POOR POOR TAPING. a competitor shouldn't have to dodge a natural smearing spot! this happens way too often..
@energ8t
9 жыл бұрын
Jireh Climaco That is the stupidest taping I've seen. Why even do that in a competition? Unbelievable. They're not even using a hold over the line and the natural inclination is to smear in that blind spot.
@jidoc4877
9 жыл бұрын
energ8t agreed, it didn't affect women's boulder if the tape wasn't there.. and they took it off for the men's. clearly it didn't need to be there in the first place!
@kerrycooper4582
9 жыл бұрын
Jireh Climaco I agree the taping seem a little stupid, and spoiled the flow of the problem, but they all had equal time to view the problem beforehand, so they all knew it was there, and if they forgot that is their own fault? Plus, the number of attempts all help the finalist be decided!
@jidoc4877
9 жыл бұрын
should THAT piece of tape help dictate attempts and sends? no, never. that wasn't that much different than adding a hula hoop to go through and mustn't touch it in the process in the middle of a problem. sure they all saw it beforehand, but the top part of the boulder makes it impossible to see the black tape from that angle. there is no defending that piece of tape, it was nothing less than ridiculous.
@alexatywall1546
9 жыл бұрын
Jireh Climaco It was a flagging spot not a smearing spot and she could've seen it if she'd looked down AND they went over it in the beginning and it's supposed to be hard so I do feel bad for them but it's not a bad taping job

I love bouldering and I look forward to the world cup events every year but, somehow, Toronto 2015 fell quite short. Poor commentary (though Sean did save the day in the finals), some filming problems (though nothing like the catastrophe that was the Euros the other weekend) and poor sound quality. Don't get me wrong, I love that we get to watch these events online, for free and I really hope this isn't the beginning of the end but, in general terms, this wasn't the best advert for the sport and it worries me. With only 5 events this year I'm wondering if the money is drying up (I know the events cost a lot to hold) and, with disappointing shows like this, is interest going to wane even more? The climbers were great, of course but I wasn't sure about the setting; everything just seemed really slow going, making it quite boring to watch. Not that it's all about the showpiece but there wasn't much for the (very small) crowd to get excited about (or so it seemed). Such a shame. Hope Vail is better. I appreciate not everyone will agree but that's my opinion anyway.

Charlotte Killick-Cole well said! Even so I don't think climbing is a sport for a broad audiance, I do agree that you should make it as interessting as possible for other people. If you aren't a climber you usually can't see the wonders of our sport. You don't know how hard some of the moves are, how steep the wall is or how tinny the grips are. So if you want more people to come around and watch the show, you just have to make it a bit more exciting.

ejmac11 Climbing comptetions are fun to watch and fun for athletes, too. I recently participated in regionals for 2015 and it was awesome. Also, since these climbers are so good, people can learn from them and get better. You also can root for certain people like other sports (although climbing is unique) so you're basically saying that you can't see what people find attractive about, say, football, or basketball
@ejmac11
9 жыл бұрын
Alexa Tywall Football and basketball are quite different from climbing in that with climbing there's a beautiful connection with nature, I think it's a sport that should not have compettions. I only enjoy climbing on real rock, and I only enjoy watching ppl climb on real rock. I guess the reason I say I can't see why people would like competion climbing, is that it has no connection with nature, and only climbing on plastic which is so much more limited and very different than outdoor climbing, as I'm sure you know.

+Dongui Llaume It was just poorly set. They should've put the tape on the side of the wall that is VISIBLE for the athletes and they should've specifically reminded them that this is a problem on problem 1 that they have to be aware of. Wheter or not you think of little technicalities like the one here has little to do with your skillset in bouldering in my opinion and shouldn't be made into a potentially gamechanging element on a problem.

The British announcer is consistently terrible. He spends far too much time off topic, consistently displays poor knowledge of the athletes ,problems and even climbing in general. However, as he told us in one of many masturbatory diatribes, he's been around forever. So I guess getting in early is much more important than possessing any oratory skills whatsoever.

Umm, the boulders seemed nice and all, but only 720p, 1/2 of the cast there was an annoying sound in the background like if they used some ancient microphone, one of the men's cameras was flashing like we used to see in the 80's, not to mention that some of the cameras showed blue screens or camera settings, the caster was obviously biased for the US competitors (see the final men's problem, admittedly that could be just my impression) and the hall was half empty... Are you sure this was world production quality when they couldn't get a solid audience for World Cup? Bigger crowds gather for local gym competitions...

sweatfootm The climbers, the competition itself was amazing. The quality of how the rest was done is a failure to show just how good the climbers are and to respect them, that's why it bothers me. The organizers didn't do it without profit, don't kid yourself. I would like to see climbing become an Olympic sport one day, it certainly does not help if our own scene can't be professional.
@jordanrock7768

Antonín Hoskovec I was there, it looks a lot more empty than it actually was. And it's a very new sport in Canada, you can't expect the crowd to be as big in Canada (first climbing gym is only 25 years old) as in some of the other places on the world cup circuit. Commentator sucks though, unfortunately.

For F1, the climbers could have reviewed the problem ten times and it still would have been natural instinct to smear past the tape. Horrible placement there.

Came to this video after watching the 2018 und 2017 world cups and I appreciate how much the live stream and the finals themselves improved over the years. Compared to the more recent competitions this is just awfully hard to watch. The commentator doesn't really know much about the athletes and the route setters' favorite element seems to be black tape. If you haven't seen them, I would recommend watching a newer world cup instead of this
@AChinaSoul

As a commentator with as much experience as he states he has during the broadcast, how is it possible that he gets the athlete's confused on multiple occasions? His commentary coupled with the technical issues makes this world cup incredibly difficult to watch. Sean McColl gives some good insights but unfortunately even that doesn't quite give enough to save it. Hopefully Vail will be better executed.

No offense to the commentators, but Women's #1 taping was just designed to cause problems from the start. It forced extra climbs wasting their energy and destroyed flash attempts. Having a boundary around a blind corner where a natural smear should be is forcing the participants to focus on unnatural, irrelevant criteria which doesn't add to the experience.
