You have cavitation in your hydraulic system causing the noises. And also your carborator needs cleaned and rebuilt. Otherwise you need to take off and repair the lineage for the throttle. All simple fixes. Ask a mechanic or also chats have good information about your issues. Generally the tractor is in good condition.

Mine made that same noise from the hydraulic pump. The hydraulic fluid was absolute junk so changed it and it quieted right down. I thought for sure my pump was junk but changing the fluid saved it.

Hello I live in Ontario Canada 504 gas was doing exactly the same thing it would run then quit . Before total breakdown it only started on low idle and I'd have to nurse it into hi throttle. I did a carburetor overhaul ( my dealer said it may take a few trys to remove all dirt so save yourself time and clean the whole intake . I did the carburetor but it was doing the exact same thing again . You mentioned yours was not charging . I had a power shutoff switch from a garage supply I deliberately broke it and inside there was green and lots of corrosion. I by passed it and it started first flip . As soon as I disconnected the negitive on the battery it quits ( mines 12volt positive ground I have a Canadian model gas) I cleaned up the ground and all terminals and ran the file across the points and it's now running good as new . I see you have a bend in the rod going to the front mine is strait . I hope this helps you with yours it's very frustrating when you know there a very good reliable tractor .

I have a diesel and can't help with the idle but I can say if you do not fix the starter you will be splitting the tractor and replacing the ring gear. The starter is much easier to fix. Also suggest draining the carb bowl if it has a drain and possibly a treatment of sea foam both in the intake and the gas. The hydraulics sound like mine did when it had water in the oil. It took about 4 hydraulic oil changes to get the water out. 4 changes is expensive but it made a huge difference. A tip for changing the hydraulic oil is to remove one of the hydraulic remote fittings so that you can purge the lines. A spare hose and a fitting that fits the remote coupler would be even better than pulling off the coupler. Best wishes.

Hello viewers! First off, thank you to those of you who have commented suggestions, and I apologize I haven't been replying. Not long after this video was posted, we sold the tractor. It went to a good home, the gentleman who purchased it said he was going to restore it. Many thanks for all the suggestions and helpful tips!

I had same problem with my 504 eventually had to replace wires, plugs, distributer, cap, and carburetor - do you have firing order correct? Order should be stamped on side of block, when I tuned mine I had incorrect firing order and had issue with start and idle. Also, have you tried adjusting idle screw or just rebuilding and cleaning carburetor? - noise you hear is hydraulic pump whining will go away once trans oil gets warm.

I have 2 IH 504 utility, 153 gas Tractors. I think its partly your carburetor, fuel line has a filter at the angle fitting that gets plugged every year. Sometimes its the float getting stuck. check the fuel bowl also. Mine does the same thing every spring if stored outside.

Just picked up a 184 International tractor with a front loader on it. The guy that had it previously rigged up a throttle handle and cable on the side of the hood instead of just fixing it right. Now the governor on it is all out of whack and keeps surging when I'm putting a load on the motor. That's how I found your video, was trying to find the adjustment tolerances for it.

Allegheny Mountain Living yeah, governors are a pain to adjust and I don't have the luxury of a shop so I'd rather not tear apart the tractor outside. Best wishes and good luck!

Have you made any progress on your 504? It sounds like you had a few issues going on. Like you noticed, your throttle linage is very sloppy. I had to do a few repairs to mine and remake part of it. I'd clean that up first. It also sounds like it's starving for fuel when it starts or you try to start it. That can be a carburetor issue. It might just need a good cleaning. The noise you heard when it started sounds like it's low on hydrolic fluid. Your starter issue, I'd think is more the starter rather than the ring gear. You also mentioned the generator was not charging. I converted mine to a alternator and my charging is great now. I'd recommend that route rather than trying to keep that old generator going.

Keith Ray thanks for the advice! I no longer own the tractor but did end up converting it to an alternator before I sold it.

just stumbled across your video. That noise sounds like your clutch possibly. As far as your idle issues go, I think your governor needs some attention. At best it might just need adjusted properly. looked like your linkage had a lot of slop in it and may need a new lever. The spring holes like to oblong and develop a lot of play. Did you tear the carb down to see if it looked OK? It could probably use a good clean out and rebuild. They are pretty simple to do.

Allegheny Mountain Living yeah, I rebuilt the carb, I think it's a governor issue.
