In August 2015, Indigenous Hip Hop Projects (‘IHHP’) teamed up with the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency’s (‘NAAJA’) legal education team to visit Maningrida for a week-long intensive workshop to create this powerful short film with community talking about respectful relationships, law, strong families and culture.
IHHP and NAAJA worked with both old and young people to explore legal themes such as respectful relationships and the ripple effect of domestic violence on the community, including people going to jail. The themes of keeping families strong, being a good role model for children and keeping culture strong are also explored.
The film also draws upon the highly successful NAAJA | IHHP music video “The Ripple Effect” and through the song’s chorus "Gurrutu Raypirri", the community is encouraged to embrace Law and Respect as the foundations on which to build a strong community.
This project would not have been possible without the generous support and involvement of the Maningrida community.
NAAJA provides legal assistance to Aboriginal people in the Top End.
